WMC Interview: Tommy Lee & DJ Aero

The last person you’d probably expect at Winter Music Conference would be Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee. But since 2004, Lee along with DJ Aero has been laying down the beats, working hard to gain respect as a DJ. The culmination of his and Aero’s efforts has been WTF?, a powerhouse production group with Deadmau5 and Steve Duda.

One this Lee wants to make clear is that he is not another celebrity jumping on the DJ bandwagon; he takes the craft very seriously. “Please do not put me in that category with those same people,” Lee insists. “I am a drummer so it’s about rhythm for me.”

Lee and Aero are already seeing that their hard work is paying off. Crowds now seem to be able to get past the fact that Lee is a celebrity drummer and tabloid fodder. “In the beginning it was hard, but now are we on the cover of magazine and releasing records. So we are finally getting the respect. It only it took 4 years,” Aero explains.

The duo hopes to keep crowds moving during 2008 even when Lee goes back on tour with the Crüe in July. "We’ll piggyback on the tour dates and shoot off a do a gig every now and then," Lee says. What you shouldn't expect any time soon is a full-length from these guys as their schedule is packed too tight right now, but do expect more WTF? tracks. "We are doing a lot of gigs. We are just going to stay grinding and working," Aero says.

So toss your preconceived notions of Lee, and give the duo a well-deserved chance as they kick it around town during WMC. You can catch the duo Wednesday at the Gansevoort for the WFT? Launch Party along with Deadmau5 and Steve Duda, as well as at the Mau5trap Party at B.E.D. Thursday they will be at the Juicy Beach party at Nikki Beach and Friday at the Moodswing360 Party at Cameo along with Dave Navarro & DJ Skribble, Skeet Skeet and more.
