WMC Friday Night Recap

The title is actually a misnomer since I went to some day events on Friday, which let me tell you are no where near as fun as the night events. See day events are mostly in South Beach which unfortunately due to the high volume of people this week, it just turns into one big clusterfuck of spring break frat boys and male Euro-trash in short-shorts clearly outlining their packages -- oh and of course DJs and industry people as well. On my walk to wherever the fuck I was going I saw Steve Aoki trotting his way up on Collins who stopped for a minute when he bumped into the MisShapes that were in head-to-toe black clothing that was completely inappropriate for how hot it was.

I first ventured into the Scion event at the Raleigh's pool, which if you've never seen it is absolutely gorgeous. There was a mix of plenty of hot bodies looking to catch the acts scheduled to perform and the occasional family with a WTF face who obviously realized they booked at the wrong time of year. Anyway, I'm not sure who was on when I got there but I notice the itinerary said Calvin Harris would be on at 6:15, so I scrambled out of there to check out a few more parties.

The Windish Agency event at South Seas had an amazing lineup. Unfortunately the South Seas pool area is as appealing as a wool sweater in Miami. To top it off, the hotel next door had a pool event as well and with no barrier between the two, the sound kept on bleeding. I was only able to catch Drop The Lime before I decided to leave.

After failing to reach my contact to get into the Pacha event at the Shelborne, I returned to the Raleigh just in time to catch Drop The Lime -- again. Insitubes followed afterward but definitely Calvin Harris was the highlight. His pop/dance songs translated well as a live performance. The crowd was a little thin, which I thought would have looked much bigger had Scion been smart enough to keep their party at the penthouse. But people danced and cheered Harris and he was really energetic and fun to watch. Oh and I spotted Chromeo at the event, which I didn't even know they were in town.

So after returning home, I went out once more in order to make it to the Fool's Gold event at White Room. It was free, which was un-fucking-believable because with the lineup they had they could have charged easily $30 if they had wanted to. I caught Treasurer Fingers, Institubes, A-Trak, Surkin and a few others. Tommie Sunshine walked in as did Chromeo and Boys Noize (no surprise there). Boys Noize's set was stifled by White Room's lack of speaker wattage, so I'm going to hold judgment until I see him at Studio A tonight, but the track selection was good.

Around 3 a.m. I decided to make my way to the Payback event at Charcoal Studios in Wynwood. The warehouse was big enough for the event but small enough not to seem too overwhelming. It also had a nice outdoor area where people were smoking and catching up. Inside was a little too dark for me that it almost felt I was going to get stabbed if I went in. I couldn't even tell you who was spinning because I couldn't see much. I can tell you Calvin Harris and Spankrock both made cameos, because I saw them hanging outside.
