UPDATE: Langerado 2009: Biccentenial Park

Well would you look at that. Miami's largest live concert festival has made the move to the big city. Last years event was pretty big considering the headlining acts were a tremendous improvement from the 2007 edition. Acts like R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Matisyahu, Ani DiFranco, 311, Thievery Coporation, Gov't Mule and Ben Folds proved to be the catalyst that vaulted Langerado into the national spotlight as a festival to rival be mentioned in the same paragraph as Coachella, Lollapalooza and some other one I can't remember in Tennessee or something.

I like the big move to Downtown Miami. Considering March is already chalk full of goodness with WMC this will simply add to the sleepless nights us residents love during this magical month. Much like Ramadan, though I drink excessively, eat many vitamins, abhor the sunlight unless on a terrace somewhere and scavenge the downtown streets for unsuspecting ladies. No lineup has been announced yet and I can't imagine where the organizers are gonna stick all the DFH's and their tents but I imagine it can't be any less as good as last year.

UPDATE: Reader Roger L. dropped some names that might be part of the line up. This is completely and utterly unconfirmed but still intriguing enough to post. Notice some electronic oriented groups in there. Kind of like a Bang festival, but the Langerado people seem to know more about festivals than the former.

Lineup: Kings of Leon, Matt Costa, Jack Johnson, ALO, The KILLERS, The Roots, Dave Matthews (Band), Spoon, Ratatat, Vampire Weekend, Beirut, Death Cab, The Kooks, Raconteurs, Justice, Jose Gonzalez, Hot Chip, Manu Chao, Rodrigo and Gabriela, Whitest Boy Alive.

this is huge. i thought the location last year was awful compared to the park they were at in weston
I was reading the facebook comments, and it seems like people are all sorts of up in arms about this festival being moved to Miami. I wonder if they are the Earthy-Crunchy types that these things usually draw. They must not be on the up and up of all the delights that Dwntwn have to offer.
gimme a beat!
I can't wait to see MPD go nuts with the taser on this crowd.
I was thinking the same POD but Ultra seems to do ok after the masses are released....Then again this is a 3 day festival......I can already see paddy wagons driving around arresting the people trying to camp and smoke a spliff. Should make for some great photo ops though.
I am the eggman
WOW! Can't wait. was planning on making the trip up to the middle of no where to see it next year, but I guess now I can just take the Metro!
YES! YES! YES!
this has to be the worst thing to happen to langerado veterans...if you think it being moved to miami is a good something is wrong with you. Tickets are going to be more expensive, "late night shows" will be all across miami. In a festival that draws thousands there is no way they will be able to accomadate the peoples needs, Langerado used to be about..the people. not the money and commercialism. The peaceful-friendly vibe is going to be ruined. Langerado is about the camping, expierementing, and times shared with strangers--making connections. All the simplicity in the world is packing up and leaving...and because of changes like these.
Amy are retarded or are you just THAT stupid? Langerado was NEVER about peaceful friendly vibes. Organizers wouldn't keep putting on the event if it wasn't making a profit. No one is that dumb to put on an event the size of Langerado and think "peaceful friendly vibes" are going to pay the bills. Take that hippie bullshit somewhere else, no one is buying it.

ALSO, if you knew anything about Langerado you'd know that the model of having a show in a urban setting near additional venues for late shows was the old model before it turned to the dirty hippie fest it was last year. If anything, the festival is going back to its roots just on a bigger scale.

How about you wait to see what organizers have in store before you start calling sell out. You don't even know who the fuck is playing.

Listen, Biccentenial is smack in the middle of Downtown Miami. Many of the clubs in Downtown are within walking distance of each other in addition to the park.

For the clubs that are further north in Wynwood or Design District it's a 5-9$ cab ride, or in the fashion of the hippies, a short hitchhike away. I wanna see how this plays out, especially with the camping. Many of the large festivals are held in camper friendly areas for the reasons Amy mentioned, and I sympathize with that. But let's see how they manage this.
I am the eggman
I wonder what the ratio between campers and homeless dwntwn vagrants will be.
gimme a beat!
Urban hippies win. Yay for me.
I hate hippies. I went to the Outside Lands fest at Golden Gate Park in San Fran and that shit was hippie/bum-infested and gross.

This is a good thing. Who wants to camp in Florida anyway? Camping at Coachella is bad - do you want to add the humidity and the Miami kids? Wuegh.

I can see Bicentennial from my balcony so I am absolutely THRILLED. Who wants to come crash?
hah either side of the argument seems to be blinded-

1) If you insult hippies (and think that they are still around) you have the historical knowledge of a fourth grader

2) Langerado may in fact have been around hotels before but it was till never in the middle of a big city like Miami

3) Camping is awesome and much cheaper than getting a hotel for only 3 days

4) Last year Langerado was voted best musical festival by a number of media outlets and if you think that that it was just a "dirty hippy fest", then why would you even be excited about hearing any news. Your mindless insulting can only make me smirk and sigh

5) Although the fest being moved to Miami is an interesting new idea and could be a great experience, when you make a huge shift from the progression that the music festival has been heading in the last few years ( I went to 2008 and 2005), you have to wonder why make such a change when a new festival could be created by the city of Miami itself.

6) If you're in "camp or die" mode, like B.A.C. has mentioned, there a number of campgrounds around that you can reserve instead of reserving a hotel.

7) Although the "big field in the middle of nowhere" atmosphere is taken away by this move, Festivals such as Summerfest and Lollapalooza seem to do fine without arresting everyone lighting up a joint

8) Duran and Amy - you're both completely wrong and completely right - A festival can not function without making a profit to pay for everything, but from my knowledge of the promoters, putting on a festival only to make money sounds like too much work just to make a check. However that does not mean its about "peaceful friendly vibes" either, although I would hope the crowd would be laid back and not a bunch of assholes. Langerado has always been about putting on a festival with bands, that in the promoters opinion, put on good live shows. Its as simple as that, how they are able to put this fest on is their own business.

Personally I'll be waiting for the lineup and event details to make any decisions about attending the festival. If they completely lose the jam/blues/funk/psychedelic/indie influence on the festival and focus almost solely on electronic/hip-hop (not that I dislike these genres at all), I doubt it'll be marked on my calender, but I think the promoters know that and I severely doubt they would move in a less variety of music way. Last year's lineup was an incredibly good mixture and I hope for the same this upcoming year. If they fail to provide that and affordable accommodations, I have plenty of other music festivals I can spend my limited money on.
in the end isn't it just best to live and let live?
gimme a beat!
Joe, I can imagine that you think it's very intelligent of you to say that the word "hippy" is no longer valid because it's not the 60s. I can also imagine that you don't have a word to describe jam-band listening, dread-lock wearing, hackeysack players who make their own organic trail mix and sell it at the show and somehow never have the time to bathe (or at least smell like they don't.)

They are a kind of people, they exist, they might not be hippies in your eyes but they're hippies to me. I can can just call them dirty kids if you want, but I think that's worse.

Saying that Langerado was voted "best music festival" by several media outlets (local newspaper outlets and not national media outlets) is like saying a small town Walmart was voted best boutique (in that town.)

And lastly, as for why Miami couldn't create its own festival, ask yourself why this hasn't happened yet. Making a festival successful and profitable is a lot more difficult than just procuring the right bands and the right environment. Langerado has figured out how to make money and they just want create a bigger market for their festival.

If you're ultimately correct, the festival will suck and I'm sure that the festival organizers have enough clout to make it what it was that you miss so dearly. So for now, give it a shot and complain later.
Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?
I've gone to every Langerado since the inception (2003). I've enjoyed every year. Last year getting two sets out of the New Mastersounds was great. The Beasties were ok but I've seen them do better. REM I could've done without. 311 were much better. (I know apples and pimentos). Thievery Corp was fun to see in a festival setting instead of the usual club thing, plus the Dynamites, Antibalas and so many more. Please don't let Matisyahu know there's going to be another event.

Past years brought the Brazilian Girls, Kid Koala, Kinky, STS9, Cake, Particle, Karl Denson, Lyrics Born, The Meters, Toots & The Maytals, Burning Spear, Los Amigos Invisibles, RJD2, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Si*Se, Blackalicious and many more. (Medeski Martin and Wood, G-Love and Michael Franti have been on the bill nearly every year since 2003.)

I really wish they would bring back Lotus for 2009. (Let the folks in Miami see how analog house can really be done.) This fest has always had a lot to offer musically and it's been pretty diverse. I'd prefer if they left out the mainstream music biz acts and concentrate on the lesser known "we''ll play or spin our hearts out for a little stage time" acts.

It's been great to watch it grow. Last year the downside was the weather and the fire ants. But it was great(and really horrible) to not leave the grounds for 3, 4 days? it's a blur... I was planning on getting an RV for next year and then they move it to Bicentennial Park. Now I've got to get a room instead.

But cut the "hippies" some slack. If a few dreads and the smell of patchouli turn you off that bad, stay home. The general crowd will be better off without your presence. I don't think the promoters would be bothered by that statement as I've rarely seen problems at the shows except caused by folks who don't understand that since day one Langerado has featured the jam band vibe. Don't worry if you prefer waiting in line outside a Miami club we can always set up a hemp rope so you can wait outside all you want...
Lineup: Kings of Leon, Matt Costa, Jack Johnson, ALO, The KILLERS, The Roots, Dave Matthews (Band), Spoon, Ratatat, Vampire Weekend, Beirut, Death Cab, The Kooks, Raconteurs, Justice, Jose Gonzalez, Hot Chip, Manu Chao, Rodrigo and Gabriela, Whitest Boy Alive.
Roger that lineup is almost too good to be true. I'm going to call it fake until I get a real proof.
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
likewise on our end, but one can hope right DUran?
I am the eggman
I would literally cry diamonds if that were the lineup.

But let's be honest, scratch out people who've already been here recently: Rodrigo & G and Spoon will probably not play. Vampire Weekend is more likely, as they'll have a new album at the time and they were received really well. I guess DMB played here pretty recently too. I'm pretty sure Beirut is on hiatus since he cancelled his European tour, too.

But yeah, if we even get half of that I'll jump for joy.
Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?
and the KILLERS are about to drop their EP so, yeah, pencil me in for an Ultra 06 redux sans sleep deprived delirium (although Brandon F was totally singing to just me in my head so it wasn't a complete loss- that and the comp VIP passes- but I digress...)
gimme a beat!
dave matthews and jack johnson. great. cant wait for the cutoff t shirt wearing date raping douche bags to come out. i was really looking forward to camping and buying shrooms from the jerry garcia look alike.
now what the fuck am i gonna do with that tent and all those vienna sausages?!?
Im going to announce the new location for Langerado 2010 - Miami Arena
this lineup is total bs. i wish it wasn't but it is.

The Killers will be in England touring in March of 2009 and will not be anywhere near Florida during Langerado dates...
definitely no Killers for this show:

they will be :

3/5/09 at Aberdeen AECC

3/6/09 Glasgow SECC

they won't be flying back for one show in Florida
If that is the lineup, then good luck to them. It looks AWFUL. Combine that with a certain little band getting back together that same weekend...they pretty much need to SERIOUSLY step it up with the move to Miami and an event going on in Hampton, VA.
langerado has sold us out.

this location could be worstThis move has nothing to due with a 15 mile back up .We did the ride into big cypress it took awhile it was a lot of fun, this move is all about more money for Ethan

Langerado is a festival not a 3 day small Miami park venue with tons of cops

I guess they can make 2 or 3 million dollars more by destroying the vibe of the festival

We all get fucked by Ethan .late night shows were great at big cypress now we must drive to and pay for and leave the park by 11 I'm sure Ethan wont pay you're DWI bill after you get pulled over.

No camping no vibes, what in the hell is going on greed,

They want to be able to sell more day passes, so they moved it to Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami. There will be no camping. Late night sets will cost extra and will be at other venues on South Beach. The reported ticket price will be between 175-200 for weekend pass. That's more than last year, that included camping, late night sets and one more day of music. There is also a sound ordinance of 12 to shut everything down in downtown Miami. There is no where to park and where there is, it costs $20. This is a big bullshit move by Ethan.

Please everyone email Ethan and let him know what you think now! ethan.schwartz@southfloridajams.comear. greed and money

Greed and money is why they have done this
wow these lineups that you guys are trying to say are good are terrible first of all if any bands like dmb and jack Johnson are there its gonna be a shitty festival. as long as they keep acts like widespread, sts9, lotus, phil, and thievery corporation this festival will be fine. please dont get all these spring break brosuf style kids to come to this amazing festival. get out your natty ice , date rape drugs, and , your low iqs because this fest is gonna get ugly now.
langerado has sold us out.

really? im the dumbest person on the planet?
then how did i figure out how to access the interweb to get to this horrible, albeit completely untrue, story/lineup announcement?
you must be upset because i accurately described you and your 5 friends who are gonna go to langerado to compete for the title of duke of douchebaggery.
if you went to langerado last year you know how awesome it was.
and if youve ever been to festival at bicentennial you know how full of cops, losers and bums it is.
why dont you leave a relevant comment instead of just hatin on a brotha?

love,

bobo jenkins

Who cares, I'll be in Hampton VA seeing that little band someone mentioned.

Don't let Matisyahu know there is another event? Are you deranged, mentally incapacitated or both? He is one of the most amazing and talented artists out there!!! You obviously have NO good taste for what real music is!

After reading this whole message board Ive released, this is wants wrong, and great about our world. Though some vets are uneasy about the move, it will give a chance for new people to attend that were intimidated in years past. It was also bring in alot more money, hence, getting bigger, better acts as well as bring in money to our city. Clearly, it wont be last years event, but with all the problems last year brought, it probably would have been different anyway. Alot more bands are doing festival tours, and with Langerado kicking off every year, its good to get an idea of who is touring, good press for promoters and good for anyone who lives and works in Miami. Also, your traveling to come to this festival, wouldnt you prefer to somewhere, apose to the middle of nowhere. Every year I attand coachella and its awesome b/c aside from it being the best festival around, then I can go to LA, or San Diego, or San Fran. The point is, your in south fl, reward yourselves with some of the perks, and it doesnt cost anything to go to the beach. As far as camping, do you listen to the reasons why your upset? We cant experiment???? Drugs. Wake up, or else live is gonna pass you by. I feel alittle of sense hypocrisy after working so hard for "Change" and now that we have it, we are saying its bad. Change is usually for the better. And guess what? The beauty of the whoele thing is you dont have to attend, but we, the openminded ones will, and have a great time on your behave.
No Jack or pearl Jam..seriously..Thats Bonnaroo 08! Maybe Dave, but he comes every year for 2 sets!! Let's mix it up ..make a name for the festival..
two words: DAFT PUNK
I hear that all the bands that were going to play Langerado backed out because they will be in VA for the return of Phish.
These have all been confirmed...
black kids
chromeo
disco biscuits
girl talk
holy fuck
king khan and the shrines
tortoise
robert randolph
umphrey mcgee

http://consequenceofsound.net/festival-outlook/langerado-music-festival/
all you whack hipster wanna be miami club kids need to stop talking because you dont know what is up. and i hope jack johnson and DMB do NOT grace us with their presence...but yes..daft punk would be amazing...only 3 days till we find out
I am going with Morrissey as of right now:

http://www.ticketmaster.com/Morrissey-tickets/artist/770791
The move to downtown Miami is uber lame. Instead of low cost camping, attendees will now have to fight spring breakers for expensive hotel rooms. Also, you can bet Miami PD will be out to lock up anyone trying to take part in some illegals. Major fuck up by the Langerado promoters.

PS: I am not a crunchy granola eater.
tix are on sale here: http://www.musictoday.com/redirect/bounce.asp?cid=38229
WEEN is going to be there too http://www.myspace.com/ween
Langerado was cancalled because Langerado was can called because of the greed of the promoter Ethan Schwartz

The only reason this festival was shut down was the lame line up and the horrible venue. I went last year with 5 friends and planned on a bigger group this year. But since there is no camping no one wanted to go. In lacked spirit. I’ll pay $300 for a ticket but expect people to pay that and tell them go find a hotel and travel back and forth for three days…..i’ll stay home. Horrible planning not sluggish economy killed this once great festival

Why did you not listen to everyone who told you Miami was the wrong venue no camping and the worstlin up in 5 years

Sad to know we were had by Ethan Schwartz who put langerado in the dumpster......

I always loved Langerado, and am sad it was cancelled this year, but hopefully next year they will come to their senses and take the festival back to it's roots! An empty field in the middle of nowhere to camp, disobey drug laws, and just party our asses off to jam bands/psychodelic/alternative music. But for now, I hope to see everyone at Bonnaroo and Rothbury!!!
