Under the Line Design: Lazaro Amaral
by Lady Wrangler, 07/12/2007
Lazaro Amaral is a teddy bear of a man who fled Castro's Cuba in the late 1960s. His first memory of America is being rescued by Coast Guards after the boat he was traveling on capsized. It's in this uprooting, that the deep roots of his artwork were planted.Teacher, printmaker, storyboard artist, set/interior AND fashion designer, this Jack-of-all-art trades attended Parson's School of Design in New York City. He currently teaches printmaking at the Art Center on Lincoln Road. Tonight from 7 - 10 p.m., Lazaro and his printmaking student, Sohani Holland will be selling their artwork as part of an Art Study Student Exhibition. There will be food, booze, music and garmental fabulousness.
The Lady will also be there, helping Lazaro sell his wares; his current collection pays homage to late '60s rock and roll as well the 1980s mentality of cashing in on propaganda. The pop icon imagery he uses throughout his work mixes like a cocktail with the commercial brain wash of all media - hence the painting title "Pop Tart Bowie."
