Ultra Music Festival line-up announced

Finally, Ultra Music Festival organizers have released "phase 1" of the line-up for UMF 10, (thanks to user LuisSleepyHead for blogging about it). My verdict: ehhh. I'm sorry but for a festival celebrating 10 years of existence, blow me the fuck away. Here is the line-up so far:

Day 1

Tiesto, Carl Cox, Justice, Rabbit in the Moon, Danny Tenaglia, Richie Hawtin, Steve Lawler, BT, Josh Wink, James Zabiela, M.A.N.D.Y., Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Dirty South, Deadmau5, Annie Mac, Jackal + Hyde, Monk, Keven and Audiofly.

Day 2

Paul Van Dyk, Carl Cox, Armin Van Buuren, Sasha + John Digweed, David Guetta, Benny Benassi, DJ Dan & Donald Glaude, Layo + Bushwacka, Fedde Le Grande, Andy C + MC GQ, Planet of the Drums, Goldie, Dillinja + Lemon D, Fabio, Shy FX, Ed Rush + Optical, DJ Fresh + MC Ivory, Photek, Adam F and Francesco Rossi.

Where is the surprise act that no one would have though organizers would book, like the Cure last year or the Killers the year before that? Where are the new and exciting up-and-comers? And why do the acts almost look identical to last year's line-up? And what happened to making Day 1 more dance-rock oriented and Day 2 the more traditional Ultra everyone knows and loves? And why do Ultra organizers insist on not offering separate tickets for each day? Why? Why? Why?

I know this is only the first batch of acts to be announced, you don't have to point that out to me. But with tickets already a staggering $129 plus fees, by the time the heavy duty acts are announced you are going to have to get a second mortgage if you want to attend. And yes, I'm not a complete bitch, there are some people listed there I'd like to catch, primarily Justice, M.A.N.D.Y., Erol Alkan and Boys Noize.

Heres hoping phase 2 will be the knock out punch. And as for business, you hold your best cards for last so you can anally rape everyone with ticket prices.

How long are the sets by each artist? Might be worth it if it's four hours of Tenaglia, Hawtin, and Josh Wink..
pop lock and drop it
Sets usually last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes I believe. Maybe 2 hours, but I don't think any more than that.

i'm sure they'll add some more stuff, but there are a couple other good names on there... namely richie hawtin, layo + bushwacka, and, hey, if you like drum n bass, those names are something to be excited about... ;)

i don't think last year's day one was supposed to be more dance-rock-oriented. that's when tiesto headlined! i think it just maybe seemed that way because of the cure's headlining set, and because the whole evening was shorter.

the next day was totally wretched though mainly because of the weather, so, hope it doesn't rain this year.
I definitely think though Day 1 last year was more progressive than Day 2. The second day was like "let's defrost all the relics we bring every year."
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
true, but i;d say it was just overall a better, more '00s mix, not that it was necessarily a dance-rock-oriented lineup. the next day, you are totally right -- although there was one techno stage that had some promising acts (loco dice is one i remember), i spent most of my time there cowering under a tent and watching sweaty people try to dance in the rain and mud to roger sanchez. ewwwww
If they add Simian Mobile Disco to day one, they've pretty much locked up every "dance-rock" act I want to see.

Justice, Erol Alkan and Boys Noize are fucking phenomenal live.

My real issue with the lineup thus far is the lack of a an upper-tier electronic live act. I don't even need a The Killers or The Cure - I just want a Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Prodigy, 2ManyDjs type act.
Carlos, if this Ultra is like any of the others, I'm sure one of those tired old bands will be added to the lineup soon.

:)

Minor correction: It's Paul Van Dyk.

Eh, I might want to go...but like you said, Duran, you probably have to take out a mortgage to even get a ticket for the first day, let alone the second. (Myself, I'd try to go the first day because I like more of the acts on the first day than the second.)
lol @ carl cox spinning both days. He's great though, always full of energy, and erol alkan, deadmau5, justice, and boys noize are gonna make me happy.
Duran, Looks like M.A.N.D.Y is at Studio A on March 27th(according to their Myspace). Hopefully they will be playing with Boys Noize, Erol, Justice, and throw in a little Hawtin. Fuck Ultra. Unless they are hoping all of Europe with their suddenly way better than the dollar euro are coming over...I am certainly not shelling out 200 bones...
I'm hoping Justice and the Ed Banger crew have a party like last year's as well. I had strep throat last year, so I left well before Justice hit the decks :( On the plus side I did get to hear Mr. Oizo, Boys Noize and SebastiAn spin.
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
I'm pretty sure Mr. Oizo wasn't at the Ed Banger party last year. Was he in town somewhere else?

But Boys Noize set last year was seriously the best one of the bunch.
Sorry I meant DJ Mehdi
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
MANDY will likely be together with the Get Physical crew.....like last year.
Where did Junkie XL and Bad Boy Bill disappear to?
this sucks. yea there's a baby's handful of good shit, but the rest of it is so fucking tired. half these people have played here several times since last summer, let alone since last ultra. I'm still waiting for these pansies to even attempt to bring the basement jaxx here. their live show is alike a goddamned circus + parliament funkadelic + a hatian garage sale explosion. we're all over daft punk, let's move on at least to something we've never seen.
toot toot. beep beep.
Basement Jaxx is da bomb dot com! I dusted off my copy of Rooty and I've been listening to it non-stop once again.

You say that like is a bad thing. Hell for the moment one those tired old bands would help this line-up well beyond belief. The line-up so far is pretty weak for what strings Ultra Music Festival can pull. But that is just from someone who has been to music festivals that blow Ultra out of the water.
I think the Chemical Brothers will show up personally. They are on tour at the time of Ultra '08 and the have no dates set from March 10th onward till August and they have a dope live show out right now. And I really think the line up so far this year is not like the line up of years past.
i have been going to ultra since ultra 3....@ ultra 8 i was so mad that it wasnt at bayfront park and the fact that it aws a two day event like ultra 9.... it is so stupid that tiesto is on day 1 to tell you the truth....its ultra's 10 year anniversary at least have tiesto and pvd on mainstage... and keep it traditional one day..... i am so sad that the 10 year anniversary looks like its going to be the same crap like when prodigy performed and their speaker blew...... to the ones that went to the ultra's at bayfront park can agree that it isnt the same....
Where did Junkie XL and Bad Boy Bill disappear to?

i agree junkie xl show's were great and bad boy bill...
i remember they were always like late afternoon
You guys...

Friday isn't THAT bad! Boys Noize WOOT WOOT!
All of Ed Banger needs to come thru. digitalism would be nice, chromeo, mstrkrft. these tickets are mad expensive too eff that. imma pop in some daft punk dvd's and smoke a J then wait for the WMC parties hollllllaaaaaaa. oh and if calvin harris goes imma choke him out
I don't remember seeing Calvin Harris anywhere last year. Anyone remember? I would love to see Harris at WMC this year.
I am the eggman
since it's the 10year party why not take it back some and have Sasha and Digweed, Infected Mushroom, Richie Hawtin, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Dan, DJ Baby Anne, Dj Irene and Frankie Bones rock the party. No really though it would be nice to see Chemical Bros, Huda Hudia and Timo Maas.
It would also be nice if the locals who throw the underground dirty techno shit on the beach could have a tent out there, not the mash-up bs that you here at pawnshop and what not but the real shit. I don't know... kids like the sobebeats kids and fesp as well as the boys that throw down at blue and laundry bar. Also I really think florida locals should get a bit of a discount I mean damn the tix are $99 at first so why not leave them at $99 for fla residents you know...disney style. After all most of the locals don't even goto Ultra anymore since there are so many jug head guidos from ct. and ny out there, not to mention the number of free parties to attend. -sorry if I offened any ginnys in my comment... say ehhh and have a drink and put more grease in your hair. hahahhahahaha sorry.
Ummm... yea no, Ultra problem isn't not bring out enough out-dated DJs, actually that's their name problem. Ultra's organizers need to start being more progressive and give the boot to DJs who still like trance is OMG so awesome!
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
forget the old bayfront park, remember the ultras on the beach?! with like.. three tents, some drum n bass jam, the main thing, annd then off at the end, like, renaissance or cream with dave seaman or whoever. none of that would ever happen now, and that's ok, but that was such a much more manageable size, and the sand thing was fun.
p.s. holy shit did someone just say ginnys... lol i have NOT heard any miami locals that term. dottie there's no way you're from here. but hey, let's agree that a lot of miami locals are just the southern equivalent.!!
someone enlighten a dumb miami kid, wtf is a ginny?
I am the eggman
i dont know B.A.C., but now im sad :(
Yup..this is a zombie city when people are complaining about an overly commercialized rave. Ultra has never been cool, and it has always brought in the mainstream crappy trance and played-out techno producers since it's inception. They basically have had the same line up since 1998..maybe with the exception of Plastikman aka Ritchie Hawtin. This is a fossil of a rave for ate-ups that had bad taste during the late 90's. These folks will get so excited to see the same Rabbit In The Moon Show for the 100,000,000,000th time....And really...who cares about Justice and his wannabe Daft Punk American Apparel Sound. Saw him a dozen times and I'm never impressed....boooring. Even all these other hipster house folks like Boyz Noize are living off of the fruits of 1999. Gimmie a break...

The show is 99 bucks, because the promters know that a bunch of dummies with bad taste and money are willing to pay for this circus. This is no longer "underground" people...this is music for the brainless masses.

Have fun boys and girls
lol, it's just kind of another derogatory term for a guido of the new york metro variety.

Hey Le Haine, you lost all credibility when you say "him" when you mentioned Justice, twice. whatta dumb phuck
I believe the slur you're aiming at is spelled "Guinea."

I'm not offended but I have been lead to believe it is a pretty damn offensive term on the level of our most revered slurs.

Here's what Urban Dictionary says: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=guinea
Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?

Ohh gee Pico...I lost my credibility with another Miami zombie...you called me out...what am I to do? What are the consequences? Am I going to get lynched by a bunch of skinny dudes with bad haircuts? Go choke on yer $300 hoodie, you buzz clip. As if I care about messing up in the semantics of them and him...two smelly french guys still equals overated poop.
yeah, it's offensive for sure, sorry. i was just surprised to see that used on a miami board because i haven't heard it in a few years.
bitching what a perfect tag cause thats what you guys are doing. ok lets not focus on the highlights like how many top ten djs are performing... i think much of the trance world is obsessed with the underground, unwilling to except that it is a main stream genre... calling out for guys the average raver doesn't really know about... look all im saying is just let those who want to have a good time have it, stop bashing an even that many south Floridians like my self wait all year for ... to be honest there is STILL no other performers i'd rather see live than Tiesto and Daft Punk.... oh yea what about the people who just come there to get laid, dance and could careless about the music....

I'm really thinking about making the jump to Miami, but all i see is a bunch of old sheits. PLEASE bring some minmal artists some deep house and all the deep dance jazz for the future of all that is dance in north america, or are they just trying to ruin it all for us to give us an image that what was the past will be the future in the US dance sceen. Any weekend line up in Berlin would kick the crap out of this, but i still think i need to go...if only just to eat empanadas and watch the chica babies will getting an anual look at the ocean!
