The party's over in Miami Beach

Saturday, I erroneously reported that Aero Bar was closed down because of capacity issues -- oh, they wish it was capacity issues that closed them down. No it seems Tony Guerra and Joseph Boyd pulled a Parkwest. What's a Parkwest? Operating without the proper permits.

According to public records pulled up by TalkNightlife.com, Aero Bar got slapped with three violations. And they only reason they got caught was because of excessive noise. After the club was warned to turn down the volume, it was discovered Aero Bar was operating without having completed proper fire inspections, which, in my opinion, is highly irresponsible seeing how that is required in order to keep patrons and staff safe in case of an emergency. It also got cited for operating without an occupational license and serving alcohol after midnight, and once more, I guess to drive a point, for having trash in the rear of the building.

But it seems that Miami Beach police was out in full force this weekend to make sure the could kill the party mood all around the city. Dream too got cited for excessive noise, and because of that it had to close this week as punishment.

Question is, is Miami Beach taking this a little too far? Are they going to start getting stricter on the rules? And if so, what does this mean for nightlife on South Beach? Only time will tell, but I think this turkey is done.

Update from Lackner: I have received word that it wasn't a lack of liquor license that caused the troubles at Aerobar, rather that the temporary license they had expired on an end-of-day basis, rather than a 24-hour-from-issue basis, as they thought. Seems reasonable to me.

South Beach will be safe. The cops probably just want more hush money/kickbacks from club owners. They see $14 drink prices and want a piece of that action. Kind of like how when you open a restaurant in NYC and two men show up before your grand opening and tell you that you're going to use their waste collection services, or there won't be a grand opening.

Now that South Beach is populated by rich boring douchebags in million dollar condos and the cool people are moving downtown, the clock is ticking before the night life is dead, just like in Manhattan. It could happen this summer, it could happen in three years, but it's going to happen. Rich by definition only have fun once a month (and defecate once per year), rich people hate noise, and rich people hate drunks. The NIMBys are quick to forget what made an area hot to begin with.

It's gotta be a fun time to hang out with the fire marshall on a Saturday night in Miami Beach. Imagine all the kickbacks and access he's getting?

The party doesn't end, its reinvents intself in difference incarnations.
there was the 90's with Warsaw, Liquid, Living Room, Chaos which changed as the 90's ended, the on set of the Ultra-lounge, Restaurants, and Hotels changed a lot of the way people were used to partying in the beach. There was always the mega dance club and that will always be a fixture. You'll always have the Cameo/crobar/Cameo, Glam Slam/Level/Mansion venues that dram the crowds and $$$. Although the day that Warsaw became Jerry's Deli and Salvation became Office Depot were definately the last big nails in the coffin for the gay party scene that predominated (as basically built) South Beach.
gimme a beat!
My mom mentioned how Hialeah and Miami Springs were the "it" spots back in the 70s. I thought that was really odd, because I don't associate either with any sort of social scene. Or maybe my mom was just lame and she was following the same line of thought as people who think the Grove is the "it" spot nowadays. Regardless, the beach and its nightlife will be around as long as there are tourists going to the beach.

When this whole South Beach scene crumbles as predicted time and time again on this site, where will the patrons of these clubs go? There aren't any clubs in Miami that tailor to the same scene. Will people begin complaining that the South Beach douchebags are invading the Miami scene?

I just don't see the beach ending because the people that go to Mynt, Prive, Vice, Rokbar, Bed, etc. don't like to go to the Miami clubs because of the scene there, not because of location.

I'll bet you dinner (at a place I choose.. hehe) that three of the five clubs you just mentioned will be closed by next summer. Most people I know already spend twice as much time drunktime downtown as they did a year ago. You can say that's an anomaly, but I think it's a sign of things to come. And I think this thread is discussing the rich douchebags who live on the beach, not the people that necessarily go out on the beach - though that can sometimes be said as well.

I don't doubt that clubs open and close, but where will they (we?) go? I don't do the club thing very often (last time was in March or April), but the people I know who are there every weekend just don't like the scene in Miami. They want the exclusiveness and eliteness and they hate hipsters. Until that scene is accommodated in Miami, I think clubs will still be hot on the beach. The most Miami can hope for is parity.

I suspect that scene is going to move downtown; first the underground/hardcore/"early adopter" stuff, then the rich/trendy people who are attracted to that, then the underground has to move.

whichi is exactly how it went down on south beach in the 90-'s. Hello people!

It's possible, but I don't know. I remember back when Pawnshop opened, lots of SoBe crowd types started heading there, to District, and to some other place I can't remember. That lasted a while. I think it had something to do with one of the Pawnshop owners at the time.

Anyway, the hipsters totally took over in every way and everyone went back to the beach. Another thing that really killed it was that Pawnshop started cheap and as it grew in popularity began increasing prices, but it was still located in the ghetto. I remember a lot of chatter along the lines of, "it's not the beach but they think they're the beach."

At the same time my experiences probably don't encapsulate as many people as I imply, so take that for what it's worth.

Yes. Just look at Space and Parkwest, they're the downtown surrogates of Cameo and whatever else is "hot" on the beach. Studio A and Life (or whatever it's called now) will be transformed to be more appealing to the masses. Places like PS14, Circa 28 and Vagabond will become like those little spots randomly strewn between the mega clubs on Washington (e.g. Love/Hate, Automatic Slims, Liquor Lounge, etc). The final blow will be the bars/lounges that will open up at the Midtown Mall and the cycle will be complete: Midtown will become the new Coconut Grove. By that time I'll be old and useless and give in to the everliving recycled culture machine, or I won't care.

Its true, Hialeah had a hotspot like Casanovas and Ricks Bar. Madonna, Grace Jones and many other disco lummanaries graced their stages.
Ok, but seriously... noise violation? where are we naples or something? its freakin miami beach for crying out loud. But still, 3 strikes and your out!
Let me buy you a drink
It is not the "cops" harassing the clubs/bars; It is Code Compliance!!! They need to justify their jobs! If only they were watched so closely!
