Review: Langerado 2008

This post contributed by photographer Santiago Felipe of Camera Obscura Photography

It's been a few days since Langerado, and looking back I must say that regardless of a couple of mishaps, Langerado 2008 was successful.

Thursday evening seemed like a nightmare. Horrible traffic that left the concert goers stuck in their car waiting for over 3 hours. The festival grounds seemed like a giant mud pie and I stood there, having random people come up to me, asking, if I was interested in buying shrooms.

Regardless of how bad things seemed, I did manage to catch Miami Locals Awesome New Republic. And what I mean by managed, I left the house at 4:30pm and stepped foot into the festival grounds at about 9:00pm. But back to ANR, I must say that was the only set that evening that I enjoyed. Pretty cool having kids yell from the crowd, "305"! Glad they got a nice time slot too. I had overheard that some of the earlier acts had been canceled due to how bad the weather had gotten. The remainder of the night wasn't too thrilling, Les Clay Pool was one of the big acts that night, I believe. Once again it's a shame I got there almost near the end of his set, during "Jerry The Sailor".

Friday and on, oh the sun does not play. I couldn't even take my own advice and put on some sunscreen. But yes, Beastie Boys & R.E.M. did perform incredible sets. I believe even attending the festival at least one of the days would of have been worthwhile. I can't say too much about Mr. Lesh, doesn't he play every year though? Change the script people!

I do recommend, if you kiddies have some time, that you look into Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. This Girl rocked. Even Keller Williams, who had been around for sometime, but heard of him for the first time at Langerado!!! I called it! They were out of hand. Sadly they had the same time slot as The Roots. I wanted to catch some of The Roots performance, but they had faulty gear and a little bit of trouble starting their set on time.

There were sadly a few cancellations, as we all know. Vampire Weekend was one. Balkan Beat Box, who I was also looking forward to seeing, damn it. And I missed Dan Deacon, who was moved to a different stage, and at an earlier time. Worst part, they didn't tell anybody! I sat through Pelican set, FREEZING! For nothing! There was a lot of upset kids. Avett Brothers also had to cancel because of an accident. I believe from what I over heard, they were on the way to the festival and an accident/traffic delayed them. Really sucks. There was another accident actually, which was a head-on collision on Saturday evening that caused me to get home at 6am, because of the ridiculous detour. And of course I had to be back at the festival by noon. Fantastic right?

By the last day, I must truly say that I was ready to go home. I was tired, burnt and cold. Good thing I layered well on Sunday, but itched because of the sunburn, it was really retarded. Sunday did have a nice little line-up though. Steel Train (up and coming? Don't know, but you should check them out!), Shout out loads (Got to love the Sweed's) and The National. Let us not forget Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes covered in shaving cream, WHAT?!

So looking back, no matter how bad the weather got or how stupid the Langerado parking staff was or how expensive the food and ATM fees were I'm still looking forward to Langerado 2009. Do it!

Big thanks to the Gents at MiamiNights.com for the opportunity. And to Langerado for the hospitality and free ice cream!

What a shame you were detoured and inconvenienced. Someone died in that accident. Sorry to inconvenience you.
Is he not allowed to complain about traffic unless it was a completely harmless accident? Give me a break.
