Review: Justice @ Club Firestone, Orlando

Justice, Justice, Justice. The shit you put me through just to see you live. Instead of the average 3 1/2 hour drive to Orlando, it took me 5 hours to having to listen to three drunken fools in my car complain how they had to pee at every other rest stop. On top of that, the storm of the century seemed to hit the entire state. It did not stop raining once during my drive Thursday afternoon. My field of vision was reduced to only about 30 feet in front of me. However I made it to the Travelodge in Downtown Orlando at 7:30 p.m. with enough time to change and warm up.

I don't know how many of you have been to the proper city of Orlando. Their Downtown shows a lot of promise but sadly seemed empty for a Thursday night. But I wasn't there to analyze the city. I was there to see Justice, who had forced me to leave the County of Miami-Dade just to catch them in their glowing cross glory.

Firestone is an impressive space, probably as big as Mansion with plenty of nooks and crannies. The stage was shielded by the black curtain which everyone knew what it was concealing. I arrived with enough time to hear DJ Mehdi spin, who played a much more crowd-pleasing set than what I recalled he played at Studio A during WMC. His set was filled with indie-dancefloor staples, which oddly felt a little lazy and predictable. It might have been also that Mehdi's set was being broadcast over mediocre speakers that didn't produce the bass I think a Mehdi set deserves. In short, he sounded flat.

But I could let that slide, because in reality I was there for the show. When the curtains parted, they exposed the French duo atop the infamous Marshall stacks and glowing cross. I was in the VIP area way above the stage and crowd that gave me a great bird's-eye view of the show. However, everyone seemed so pumped up, I quickly got off my high horse and made my way into the massive crowd pushing my way to the barricades right in front of the stage. I got plenty of dirty looks, but being from Miami so I just returned the favor.

They played all the fan favorites of course, including "Genesis", "Let There Be Light", "D.A.N.C.E.", "DVNO", "Waters of Nazareth", "Phantom", and of course, the song that made them famous "We Are Your Friends". It was during "We Are Your Friends" that the show reached its climax as the entire crowd sang the lyrics loud enough to deafen the music. Justice chopped up and mixed their catalog of songs giving a performance that resemble more a Metallica concert than any dance party I've been to. Justice aren't dance music superstars, they are plainly rockstars, which is odd to say, but if you had witness the show you'd agreed with me. The crowd moshed and crowd surfed during the entire performance, which was a little frustrating because I wanted to dance. After getting smacked in the face by someone's foot for the 20th time, I had had enough and made my way back up to the VIP area.

After Justice wrapped it up, the crowds flocked for the exits and it was only a little past midnight! That was really disappointing because Justice laid down a DJ set after their performance. This is exactly the reason I think the show would have worked better in Miami. No silly last calls to get in the way of keeping the people from partying.

I can't wait to see them performing at the Ultra, they're the big stars line-up for the event. If you like Daft Punk, Vitalic, Simian and on the other side white stripes, blur or other teens rock bands then you'll luv JUSTICE.
