Review: Girl Talk @ Studio A

A packed venue, throngs of people waiting outside for an opportunity for a ticket at the door and as diverse a crowd as I have ever seen made for an excellent night. I never imagined Girl Talk would commend such a large crowd but the sweaty and crowded atmosphere at Studio A Saturday night spoke otherwise.

From what I had read before going to the show it seemed Girl Talk was a crazy, sweat naked mash up DJ. While GT did mashup songs he also simply mixed all different kinds of genres. I think thats were his appeal lies. Playing to the sounds of every individual in the venue making all at some point throw their hands up and jump around like a marsupial trying to kill its baby. I wasn't overly impressed with GT spinning but the crowds of dancing people begged to differ. Hey, everyone has different tastes so sue me.

Overall the event was put together very well. The lines outside were oderly and divided into haves and have nots (tickets that is). In the end I was told 200 people had to be turned away once the Studio A hit capacity. As my friend Paul from StereoHype said, the moral of the story: Buy your tickets in advance.

Thanks to StereoHype for providing tickets for the contest winner and Studio A. You can find pics of the event and South Florida tour over at Kcoll Design.

That shit was pre-recorded ;)
Dude's not so original. give me my 1990's cd collection and Ableton Live and 57 hours later you'll have "night ripper" and then I can show my 7 year old cousin how to do it 'live'. y'all got 'ripped' off...

plus half the songs are so dissonant in tone... i don't get why people find them pleasurable to listen too...

Once again I make the argument that taste cannot be entirely subjective...
People Should Quote Themselves...
Girl Talk is one of those acts you love or hate CNTRL. However, seeing him live is pretty amazing. He has this energy that is just contagious. He's clearly not about playing his stuff live, he is more of a spectacle. I give him props for doing what 99% of acts out there can't do: entertain a crowd.

I agree with Duran, he has an energy matched by few other performers and it spills over into the crowd so seeing him live it's hard not to have as much fun as everyone around you. And just because something is dissonant doesn't mean it won't be enjoyable to listen to, it's up to the individual. FYI he doesn't use ableton, he uses some random windows WAV editor and you can see how he makes his tunes here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KykbPtRb0K4&feature=related

Grooveshark followed Greg on his Florida tour starting first in Gainesville, then to Orlando, then Tampa, and finally ending in Miami. Grooveshark even saved the Miami show from being cancelled.

We recently had a chance to sit down with Greg and discuss the tour, getting laid in the bathroom, and his views on piracy:

he was good but not nearly as good as expected... the problem with the program he was using is that you're firing loops on an off one-by-one unless you have a controller of some kind... since he was just using his mouse, that meant adding and subtracting one at a time. the problem this created is that his mixes were never really arranged right, with elements dropping in and out at weird times - whatever he could click on and when (e.g. he has to click off the vocal and start a new one, and can't do it at the same time...) it's picky, but basically he couldn't create many buildups and breakdowns, and it just went from beat+vocal-vocal+new beat+new vocal all f-ing night.... got really boring by the end and the novelty wore off, plus the opening act sucked harder than your mom
You mean the act that kept on referencing cocaine and Miami?
