Positions in Context: 2007 Grants Program Exhibition
Opening this Thursday night at Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation is The Positions in Context: 2007 Grants Program Exhibition. Each year the CIFO board of directors reward grants to 10 or so emerging Latin American artists giving them a good exposure stateside (or at least... Miami-side). Each artists proposal is put into effect and the space is transformed into a group exhibition of solo and collaborative works spread out through the enormous space with sculpture, video, installation, sound arts and maybe a painting or two... Im not sure.
This years roster of lucky Latin bastards to receive the reward are:
Alberto Baraya (Colombia), Fredi Casco (Paraguay), Donna Conlon (Panama), Adriana García Galán (Colombia), Renata Lucas (Brazil), Luis Molina-Pantin (Venezuela), Angel Poyon (Guatemala), collaborators Cecilia Szalkowicz & Gastón Pérsico (Argentina), Emilio Valdés (Mexico), and Hector Zamora (Mexico)
CIFO only really has 5 shows a year, with the grants program and the basel show being of most significance. They aren't in sync at all with the Wynwood art walks second saturday schedule (in part their location being dead center park west) and don't do much promotion other that a handful of personally mailed invites, surely only to major collectors the big fish in the art scene. You might notice on their exhibition page that the Grants exhibition is said to start the 21st. Pay no mind to that, direct sources confirmed this big bang "invite only" (if you know you're invited) is on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 in the evening. Expect major glitz quality, catering and cocktails. CIFO doesn't slack when it comes to Opening nights given there small slew of big ass shows. They regularly draw a crowd of 300-400 people so get there early if you plan to park and not walk through too much crack town or if you don't like a thick crowd in between you and your complimentary liquor.
