Las Olas Riverfront: FORECLOSED

Well not quite yet but Wachovia bank is moving to forclose on the Las Olas property because:

Las Olas Riverfront's owner isn't paying bills, is neglecting the property, and is not following through on getting city approval to level it.

As a result of the foreclosure warning by the bank all plans to demolish and build the "New River Las Olas" project have come to a staggering halt. Apparently some Boca developers were gonna demolish and rejuvenate the area with condos, skyscrapers, a hotel, and a health club, grocery store, and restaurants. Here's my suggestion to those Boca developers, Ft. Lauderdale sucks, Las Olas sucks and your better off not investing a penny in that crappy area. Let's hope they read our blog and get the hint, if the foreclosure isn't evidence enough.

boca developers are also the guys behind the biscayne landing project. here's a really good write-up of the site's history and the progress of the development:

the renderings of arquitectonica's town center look really neat...does anyone know if any of it has been built, or if it's even happening? so far i've only heard of a few of the ugly giganto high-rise condo towers being built (with more on the way?). what's up?
And the downtown gentrification REALLY any more credible?

Can you elaborate CNTRL? Are you comparing gentrification of Downtown 954 vs. Miami?

Sure-

"Las Olas sucks and your better off not investing a penny in that crappy area. "

I was making the statement that for all the ca$h poured into downtown Miami-Parkwest-PAC area- and neighboring hoods, not much actual quality of life has improved. Las Olas is actually a pretty vibrant place full of people willing to spend money on food, entertainment, etc. at local businesses. I can't say the same for Miami. Look at some of the great spots we have that get little support (Lost & Found Saloon is an example of this). Most people aren't too supportive of the few establishments in the area that are trying to contribute to the quality of life in the downtown and uptown areas of miami. There is patronage in the Las Olas area and improvements are needed and worthwhile if the wants city continues to continue growing.

It's a shame what's going on about both fronts-though with differing reason of circumstances...

Las Olas is one big frat house, I'll take Downtown Miami's barren wasteland over that any day.
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
I think there is a fundamental difference between Las Olas and Miami Downtown. The actual spread of the area. Most of the development in Downtown Miami has taken place north of the Actual "Downtown". Park West, PAC area, Wynwood etc. It spread out over a greater distance where in Las Olas is concentrated in a small area forcing everything closer together, in turn making crowds and patronage look bigger.

What bothers me about Las Olas Riverfront is that it's complete bullshit. It was made to look old. I have the same problem with Mary Brickell Village. I don't see how you can compare the revitalization of downtown as a whole, though; that's a number of different small projects.
pop lock and drop it
I guess essentially I was lumping all the areas in downtown/uptown Miami together. I guess that might be what actually makes the re-vitalization difficult-the space between them.

Las Olas Riverfront does have some pretty lame establishments currently(what's left at least)-but the project was supposed to up the ante and provide a more modern and diverse offering of resteraunts, bars, shops, and entertainment-for whatever it's worth-hopefully would have been an 'improvement'...

I think the point is that growth should be welcomed in the South Florida area in whatever fashion since people down hee are so finicky to begin with...the more options the better.
