Im going DEAF and so are YOU!

You, know. I've come to realize and fearfully admit to the fact that I am effectively going deaf. Not just going deaf, but contributing to the slow and painful retching out of my ear drums about 3 times a week. I'm willing to bet a lot that you are probably going deaf too. I came to this dreary epiphany among some homies, one of which works at studio A, a place who in my honest opinion has a ridiculously painful sound system. We joked about how we were absolutely going to be that crowd of late forty-somethings  shouting "WWHHHHHAAAATTTTTTT???" to and fro amidst everyday conversation annoying everybody.. I think he's right. you and all your clubby buddies will have crappy hearing in 15 years along with me and mine. Excluding of course the what?? 2 maybe 3 people that i know wear earplugs on a semi-regular basis. I don't even know where to buy them. Honestly, no clue. They are probably inexpensive too.

Here are some informabits on Noise induced hearing loss

sensitive structures, called hair cells, are small sensory cells in the inner ear that convert sound energy into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Once damaged, our hair cells cannot grow back. Yeah, great. Every cell down, is down for the count, FOREVER. I mean damn, Even Braincells grow back.... WTF?] [nicd]
62% of clubbers suffer hearing loss [groovetickets]
Long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss [nicd]. Your average club sysytem can easily hit 105 decibel levels, which according to hearnet.com, is only safe for about 5 minutes at a time unprotected (no earplugs). yeah, lets go chill outside 75 times a night, or only go out at night for a safely alloted timespan. YEAH OK.
For perspective, a jackhammer hits tops out 100 decibels, and a chainsaw hits 110 db, as does a motherfucking PLANE TAKING OFF! .[hearnet.com/bbc.uk]
Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoke have been shown to hurt the ear's self-defense reflex. Now thats just downright unfair. [hearnet.com]
Employers can be prosecuted if they fail to protect employees' hearing if they are exposed to noise above 85bd.[bbc] (this is uk btw. so i doubt thats the case in our good ol' lower eastcoast metropolis.)
If you can't afford earplugs, you're in luck because: Sticking toilet paper in your ears will help reduce the noise therefore reduce the risk of hearing loss.[groovetickets]

I hope I don't give the wrong impression. I am NOT saying you should only go to a club in 5 minute intervals or that you might as well walk around revving a chainsaw and try to hold conversations with peers because thats pretty much what your going through on your nights out. I just have to live with the fact that one day i will have two useless skin flaps flanking my skull, especially with the kind of music I normally pursue (drum n bass, breakcore, ragga, dubstep, glitch hop, experimental, synth tech and just straight up NOISECORE) I've been suspect of the off chance I am screwing myself Aurally. After getting trampled by the amount of info online I realized that you too, oh so faithful miaminights blog reading club goers (all 10 of you) are going deaf right alongside me.

But hey- maybe if we continue animal testing, I can get my new ear in just a few weeks, one grown on a mouse!

Dude: go to CVS or Walgreens and get some foam earplugs, the ones people use to cut out noise while they're sleeping.

They are comfortable, adjustable, and really cut down on the noise. And they're cheap -- you can get a box of 50 for around 10 bucks.

Mack's soft foam earplugs are the most comfortable ones to wear for extended periods.
