Here today, gone tomorrow... Club Land Motto

After the lengthy discussion on Duran's post, I got to wondering about all the places that have come and gone over the year of Miami clubland. Have the hot spots always been on South Beach? What about back in the day when places like Rick's Bar, Casanova's (which were in Hialeah and drew acts like Grace Jones and Madonna herself), and Fire and Ice held court. My inquiry took me to this great website discomusic.com. The site invites you to:

Instantly relive those adrenaline-pumped hedonistic moments on the Disco dance floor, hearing a flawless killer DJ mix set or being hypnotized by the spinning Disco ball as you learn the newest hustle dance steps.

Okay, so yeah I'm a TOTAL sucker for disco music, but the really great part is the Discos / Night Clubs page which takes you to a list of all the old disco dancing venues in the U.S. If you want an idea of what nightlife looked like in the 70s and 80s, be sure to click on the specific club links and read the reader comments. In some instances you even get pictures of the venue and of people.

It is interesting to note that mostly every party that was worth going to prior to 1992 was NOT on South Beach.

Like C&C M.F. said "Things that make you go hmmm".

Great site, even though i was a lil boy, born in 74, I always remember Miami for the disco lunch hrs. Or even when we had a whole station dedicated to it. You must check out classica 92.7 5 to 7 mon - fri or on the weekends at nights. They play fun disco, high energy and dance classics. Makes me wanna '' bump and dance'' LOL.

Great Post!! It's really ironic, that I have been listening to alot of disco myself within the last couple of weeks. Im loving alot of the new disco-ish stuff Aerolpane,Yuksek etc as well. surprised to read about Casanovas and Rick's Bar on here ... lol, great times at Fire and Ice !! , some other clubs come to mind....Pete and Lenny's, Backstreets (Chill Pepper), later in the 90's Club Nu was lot's of fun with it's monthly decor change.. The Institue on Lincoln was bad ass. Early Kitchen Club on 21st was insane. Im going out on a limb here but before any of these clubs did anyone ever go to "The Forrest" ? (across from Casanovas).
If any of you guys have any photos from this era that are available digitally (perhaps scanned onto a photoCD by walgreens), I'd love to post them in an oldskool gallery!

Don't forget about Biscayne Babys.
for a great run down of those oldskool venues (scaramouche, Honey for the Bears, Suzanne's in the Grove, etc.) check out 305disco.com
They has some great write up and interviews (I personally loved the one with Scaramouche Legend DJ Joe Lenders. The laser light story is def. one for the books)

ENJOY!

Is it me or is that site a total piece of shit? What's with those links on the homepage?

Scaramouche in the Omni!!, I remember going to a couple Halloween parties there......... back then the fashion
de Rigueur was baggy parachute pants with long sleve Polo shirts and Giorgio Brutini Le glove's ( no socks!!)

on another note............for some new cool (indie-electro) disco stuff check out Sally Shapiro Romance Remix stuff. Its on Itunes. only stuff lately to get me excited enough to start making my own tracks...... Are they playing this anywhere out? indie kids? anyone?

it needs a little more tlc if you ask me- but being that's it's the ONLY one of it's kind with those references i'll give it the cred... you have to start somewhere, plus i bet it has to be hard/near impossible to dig up anything from back then... i mean.. how well would film hold up after the 2-3-4 days benders people went on back then (that's even if they remembered to take the lens cap off) plus where would you keep the ever so slim 35mm brick?
gimme a beat!
I don't necessarily consider myself and indie "kid" but I played the Tensnake remix last night at Love/Hate. It's also on the live mix I recorded for Off the Radar blog.

Great remix album. Not all artists are suited for a full remix album like that. But she pulled it off really well.
I remember I was about 5 years old standing outside of Casanova's with my grandmother as she waited for my aunt to come out....who then got a beat down for sneaking out of the house.

Ahhhhh....memorias ;)
I have a site all about the Disco and clubs from the 70's and 80's you may browse around for info and memories.

There was very little nightlife in South Beach until the early 90s. Prior to then, it was a very unsafe area. Everything south of 41 St was supposed to be demolished and replaced by high-rise condos, but the preservationist saved it. Miami Vice shot alot of scenes there, and people rediscovered the area and started restoring the old hotels. Back then, we mostly partied in Ft Laud or Miami/Hialeah. Copa, Backstreets, Pete and Lenny's and Penrod's. In Miami/Hialeah it was Casanova's, Roxy's Five and Dime, Fire and Ice, 13 Buttons and On the Waterfont. Hard to believe that was over 25 years ago. I left Florida in '85 and moved to NYC. Wished I had taken some pictures back then. Seems like there's very few on the internet.
