Gay Bowling League (insert quip about homos, fingers, holes, and balls here)

Jamie Beckett of Edgemiami.com did a great write up about the new Miami Beach Gay Bowling League.

Over the past few years, Miami has built a reputation as a place that is gay-friendly and full of action. From clubs to restaurants and festivals, there is plenty out there celebrating the Gay and Lesbian community, including being the location of the annual White Party.

Now, the Lucky Strike Lanes and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce are doing their best to build on that reputation. They recently approached Edison Farrow of the South Beach Social Club about organizing the Miami Beach Gay Bowling League. Farrow predicts this will be a fun and great way to meet people.

"I am just happy to add another fun activity to the gay community. The response has been incredible. One day after announcing the leagues, we are almost full," said Farrow.

The league will begin on September 7, 2008 and end on Election Day. During this time, teams of four will meet at the Lucky Strike Lanes every Tuesday. To take part, you must be at least 21 years old. All participants are expected to pay their fee of $19.00 a week in advance ($190.00 total).

The fee allows two games per week as well as shoe rental and taxes. Originally, there were going to be only 14 teams. Due to the response, organizers have decided to expand to 28 teams. Teams can chose to play either from 7-9 PM or 9-11 PM. Farrow has promised that there will be some wonderful prizes awarded to the top three teams in the league. Participants will also be allowed to watch all the election news on closing night on any of the many big screen TVs at the venue.

If you would like to take part in the Miami Beach Gay Bowling League, or you have questions about it, please contact Edison Farrow at edison@sobesocialclub.com. The Lucky Strike Lanes are located at 1691 Michigan Avenue in Miami Beach and will be the home of Martini Tuesdays for the 10-week run of the league. Usually, the weekly cocktail party is held at a different location each week. It is also organized by Farrow and the South Beach Social Club.

The South Beach Social Club organizes various parties and events at South Florida hotspots for the Gay and Lesbian community. You can learn more about them and their other events by visiting their website at www.sobesocialclub.com.

You know, whenever I hear about these things I'm a bit offended but also empathetic. I understand that if you're gay you'd probably rather hang out at places where other gay people are at, so as to up your chances of meeting someone, etc.

At the same time, I find it a bit offensive because there would never be a straight bowling league. Even if straight people could sign up for gay bowling league, the way it's promoted alienates straight people. No aspect of a regular bowling league is meant to alienate anyone.

It's not really a big deal but it does kind of get at me when I read it.
"Ahh, she's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro."
Get over it, keyrat. I have to be surrounded by breeders all day long and welcome a gay bowling league.
Straight people have always had it easy. If you wanna bowl, go bowl.
to put it bluntly, most institutions, social activities are BY DEFAULT set up for straight people, dominated by straight people, not as inclusive of queer people...cool it.

Thank you for your thoughts. I can understand the how offended you feel. I feel the same way when I go out to, oh I don't know, a bar in anytown usa (miami included) and I am with my bf and I get an expletive tossed in my general direction because I might happen to place my hand on his, or give me a bite of my food or whatever.

I am curious, in reference to your comment, at which part of you does 'it kind of get at'? Because whatever that part that is, it needs to get over itself.
gimme a beat!
Oh wow, I struck a nerve, huh? It gets at me that we can't be equal. Like I said, not a big deal, but it always comes to mind when I read this stuff.
