Curses! & The Attic

You would never know this by reading my posts as of late but I love Electro House. I was spoon fed that shit as a baby. Even in the mist of Nu Rave, you curvy little whore you, that everyones grown to either love or hate I'm still a sucker for well executed electro tracks that lead towards the housier side of dance music. I've partied down to the pots and pans sounds of Tribal House back in the day. I've wiped my forehead with a cold vodka tonic to some soulful Vocal House aka Diva house aka La La Land House with the best of 'em. I even got Happy Hard Core House once by mistake to a bag of angel dust in this warehouse in Philly. Eww Yeah Right!

House music as an electronic music category that is really defined by a few key characteristics. It usually has BPMs around 120 or so, specific types of production methods & instrumentation from the 1990s (its defining period) and a soulful vocal approach that's reminiscence of being in church on a Sunday. Speed that shit up and throw in a guitar lick or two, add a little bit of lemon pepper butter aka a poppy synth and waa laa Electro House.

Curses! is just that. But get this, Curses! is a current project . New York City based electronic artist Luca Venezia, aka Drop the Lime aka Curses! has been releasing beats since 2003. He's been making music since he was a teenager. And he's everywhere touring these days with the likes of laptop buddies Surkin and Para One. They came as far south as Orlando. But I missed the tour. Curses!

The difference between Curses! then most other laptop artists is his knack for never forgetting to add emotional elements to his music, usually a soulful vocal part or beautiful melody line. You can tell by listening to Luca's music that he too was spoon fed House music. I found an informative on camera interview he did with club pal The Captain (a Boston, Massachusetts head that I met back in the day) that you might enjoy.

Curses! has inspired me to add a little bit more "House" to my play list. The good people over at The Attic invited me to drop a set this Tuesday, Sept. 25. The party is hosted by the lovely Shannon & Ryan and poppin' with residents Mike Duece, Ray Milian & Jonathan. The Attic is a great south beach party featuring both new and old indie jams. I love the space. Located next to Miami Ink at 1342 Washington Ave. Every time I go there I feel like I'm in some rail road house style bar in the East Village. You can get cranked for free too with an open Absolute Vodka Bar from 11-12.

People have told me that they hate going out sometimes on Tuesday nights because they end up out till 9 in the morning on a mid week night! Curses! Call in sick cause there's no way out!
