Chromeo LIVE at The Fifth!?!

File this under "What were they thinking?" Chromeo is stopping by The Fifth Thursday, April 17, for a special live peformance along with Louis XIV. Why the fuck would Chromeo play at The Fifth? I mean Studio A is just over the causeway and a much better venue for this kind of show. I can't for the life of me understand this decision.

And for those wondering why Chromeo was oddly absent during WMC, it seems that being MTV's Artist of the Week is enough reason to raise your appearance rate to $10,000. I was told most promoters laughed at the figured and told them "No thanks." I mean asking for that kind of money and not even having a hit on your repertoire is pretty ballsy and Chromeo ended up losing big time for having big egos.

But I guess they are back to redeem themselves with this special concert. Tickets are on sale for $20 at www.bfg.tickets.musictoday.com. But I do have some bad news kiddies -- the event is 21 and over. I'm not sure if the Fifth understands 80% of Chromeo's fan base is probably under the age of 20.

In case you have no idea who Chromeo is, I leave you with their '80s-insipired music video for "Bonafide Lovin'".

I'd be interested to see how well received Chromeo and Louis at an establishment like the Fifth. South Beachers are notorious for their unadulterated love for Top 40. I have a feeling people are gonna sitting in their seats wondering wtf is going on.....Anyone know who the promoters were who booked this?>

I hope they don't plan on enforcing dress code...

I can dig the sound these guys have (not so much that song up there, though) but I'm still waiting for the Bronski Beat to make a comeback.

Big dave here from studio a. Excuse spelling as sidekick has no spellcheck.

The inside scoop on this story is that a marketing group, contracted by camel, is approaching their annual deadline to spend some serious $ on shows.

Each camel venue gets a different stipend level depending on sq footage, signage, brand range and other factors. I am certain the fifth has a large stipend.

Studio a is a camel venue. I was contacted by said marketing group and they asked me who was topical and, thus, who I would like to book with my show stipend. I relpied immediately with chromeo, as we have been in a 18-month battle to re-book the act after we generously released them from a booking so that they could play a festival.

I introduced my marketing guy to chromeo's booking agent via email and I am told 24-hours later that it will not be happening (we are still working on booking an impact artist to spend our stipend).

2 weeks later, I am sheepishly prooffered several tickets to the event @ the fifth (yes duran, I have an extra one for you), from marketing reps associate.

What follows is conjecture, my opinion if you will.

I believe that my marketing guy spoke with chromeo's booking agent and found out that chromeo is, indeed, commanding a higher guarantee than I estimated and would be more money than my stipend would allow (even though I had told him I would be happy to subsidize efforts to finally bring chromeo to the "A".). The marketing rep, trusting my opinion, proceeeded to book chromeo at this completely inappropriate locale, as the fifth had a heftier stipend to spend.

The marketing rep who contracted the booking does not have the depth of knowledge regarding Chromeo's fan base that you blog contibutors posess and, subsequently made a, in my opinion, poor decision to have the show @ the fifth.

Thanks for the soapbox, this one burned my a$$ a little
Dave, thanks for the detailed and valuable insight into this strange booking. I see these kinds of bookings now and then and it never made sense to me, but I figured it was an out of state agency doing the show and they didn't understand the venue they had chosen. See you soon at A.
pop lock and drop it
another question: what's with the louis XIV pairing?
Arielle is suffice to say this show is going to be a hot mess... and not in a good way.

long time reader, first time comment... what in the effing world!!!! at the fifth?????? trade tix for spoon?!?!? great scoop from dave. I saw Louis XIV when they opened for The Editors, not bad, but their 2nd album is not all that. they should have not opened for The Editors and just can't see them with Chromeo.
At the Fifth? Remember last year when they played at the Downtown Riot Event at Studio A? They had the most underrated DJ Award! Why try to make a come back playing at the FIfth?
This is kinda crazy but chromeo, i wont miss. I got to see Andrew jumping on Big brother A-traks back and fucking with his shit as he spun Chromeo jams at the white room during the WMCs. I am a Promoter and have a squad of beautiful females who i personally introduced to the sounds of chromeo and they all want to attend so does anyone know who this promotional group is so i could just get bottels and not have to worry about these girls getting tickets?
Heard they're going over to MoneyShot at the Vagabond afterwards, with Flosstradamus.....just what i heard...
dave, thanks for downlow ... i bet chromeo is going to wonder what's up with the fifth as well. this reminds me of bra girls @ cameo last year.. that was a henessey event.. c u there !
