Bump 'n Grind 2006

With the year coming to a close, I look back at all the fun times I had this year. Most of my time was spent at the clubs - come on I wouldn’t be writing for this blog if it wasn’t that way- and what I remember most vividly of course is the music. So I present you my list of the songs that kept me body shaking in 2006. Of course, this list reflects my opinion and musical taste, so don’t if you don’t see the song you love, well tough luck.

10. Kelis “Bossy” I swore this bitch couldn’t make a more infectious track than “Milkshake,” but 2006 brought "Bossy” making my summer all about “diamonds on ma neck, diamonds on ma grill.” Even better is the Prince-fied remix that DJs started to play later on.

9. The Knife “Like a Pen” Icy electro beats and awkwardly sung vocals make for good music. The Knife got my attention first with “Heartbeats,” which I easily declared the “most emo song ever” (razorblade shout-out included). After I thought I had them figured out, they released Silent Shout this year, which is electronica on Bjork-level proportions. Yes, that’s a good thing.

8. Snowden “Black Eyes” (Le Castle Vania Remix) Here begins my series of songs that I like the remix ten times better than the original. Le Castle Vania gives the song the booty-shake factor it was missing, making it a dance floor-ready hit.

7. MSTRKRFT “Easy Love"/Wolfmother “Woman” (MSTRKRFT Remix)/Metric “Monster Hospital” (MSTRKRFT Remix)/Annie “Heartbeat” (MSTRKRFT Remix) I was so disappointed when the Canadian duo didn’t show up to Miami during Bang weekend to get the place shaking at Revolver, but I will always remember the soundtrack they provided for me in 2006. Be it their solo work or three monstrous remixes that easily surpassed their original mixes (except for “Heartbeat").

6. Justice “We Are Your Friends"/"Waters of Nazareth” 2006 seemed to be the break out year for Ed Banger Records, the Parisian-label that is redefining what is considered dance music. Justice went on to win Best Music Video for “We Are Your Friends” at the MTV European Music Awards, much to the dismay of Kanye West, and “Waters of Nazareth” continues the momentum by laying down sleazy, electro beats. Ed Banger promises a bunch of full-length albums from their artists, including Justice, in 2007. The anticipation is killing me.

5. The Sounds “Tony the Beat” I really don’t know what I like about this song so much, it’s not like it’s an amazing piece of music. But the Sounds make it pretty clear when they half-sing, half-shout “This song is not for you lovers,” meaning it’s just a damn good party-hard song. Maybe it’s the cheesy synths or my nostalgia for Blondie/new wave songs, but this track is the shit.

4. Cansei De Ser Sexy (aka CSS) "Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” I’ll admit I know none of the lyrics except for the title, so I usually just sing “blah, blah, blah, blah… Let’s make love and listen to Death From Above.” But when you are drunk, does it really matter? The Brazilian group shows a lot of versatility on their debut, so I expect to hear more from them in 2007.

3. Hot Chip “Over and Over” Like the title alludes to, the song’s lyrics are repetitive and just when you are about to get tired, it breaks into a dirty-word spelling bee. Need I say more?

2. Uffie “Pop the Glock"/"Ready to Uff"/"Hot Chick” White girl rapping over techno beats? Sounds like an M.I.A. knock-off, but Miami-girl-via-Paris Uffie was able to avoid the M.I.A. tag by not getting too political and just rapping what she knows about. Her songs are borderline campy but suprisingly always work. When she first hit the clubs with “Pop the Glock,” I presumed that was the last we’d hear from her. But then came “Ready to Uff” and “Hot Chick,” two songs that are just as catchy and probably better dance tracks than her debut. Another Ed Banger artist that we’ve been promised will release a full-length in 2007.

1. Bloc Party “Helicopter” (Weird Science Remix featuring Peaches) You don’t understand, I absolutely HATED the original song, so when Steve Aoki and Blake Miller took this horrendous rock ditty and added “Peach to the mix” it turned out to be the BEST dance track of the year. I’m still listening to it non-stop and I still can’t get over how orgasm-inducing Peaches’ vocals are.

There are still a lot of tracks I would have like to have added to the list, but I tried to keep at 10. Disagree with me? You favorite track didn’t make the list? Well, leave some comment love and we can argue about it.

damn, I never thought there was anything wrong with the original version of Helicopter. Actually, I thought it was pretty fuckin good. I'll have to check that remix out fo'sho'.
I didn't find a place to put this specific comment, but I thought your new blog could use some constructive criticism. I have crappy grammar, so bear with me.

First of all...most local entertainment news outlets, be it a rag like the New Times or a Blog such as yours really never gives an objective view of the clubs the reporters are reviewing. The message is tainted once the reporter has guest list access, becomes chums with the promoters, and has shots of Patron in his hands every 5 minutes. I thought a blog's purpose was to be independent, not to allow special or personal interest get in the way (but I guess in your case it is an excuse to party for free?). It is time to give people the truth....are you really getting paid millions in advertising that you can't give the truth to your readers?

Revolver is a prime example. When I read your raves and reviews I ask myself..."did we go to the same club?" But it is well known that giving a reporter the rock star treatment at a club is a sure way for a club to get a positive review....but it is not the real experience that the locals get when they visit the clubs and shell out the cover charge for entertainment.

First and foremost, I've know Josh for years and when Revolver first started, it was the shit! They had better locations... (1800 club was the best)... better DJ's...Alex Caso, Jimmy James, Mike(went to Turkey), Lolo (Sweat records), and Dennis M....notice that these good DJ's no longer work at Revolver or are ever mentioned by Revolver. The music back then was always mixed nicely and you never knew what to expect. The crowd was also fucking dope...it wasn't a "who looks cooler" pageant or a pony show...it was about people checking out good music.

The current vibe is complete nonsense.

Let's start with the current DJ's. They all look like they belong in an American Apparel catalog. Too bad their looks do not match their skill. We all know Lauren A. is a Dj because she is the promoter's girl...but every time she goes on deck, I puke... (and she is actually a cute girl). Her mixing style can only be described as wack. Throwing in a Devo song right after the Ying Yang Twins without blending or matching is bull shit. For that I can place my Ipod in random and dance at the Hot Topic. I'm all for mixing it up...freeform.. but it has to be done right. (e.g... Matt Cash, Induce, Alex Caso, Lazaro Casanova - the last of the good revolver djs). I won't even get into Ryan Evans with his wack downloaded MP3 remixes and wack song selections... (C’mon MC Hammer..ugh!) He is the wackest Dj in Miami.

Factoid: Did you know that Josh use to complain when the Djs would throw in a hip hop joint back in the day?

The door. Ever since it moved to Pawn Shop and then Studio A the door people have sucked (actually the door has sucked since Soho). If I can't get my friends on the guest list they have to go through hell just so that the club gods will smile kindly on them and allow them to dish out money for a good time. Revolver is only dope when you are on the guest list and drink tickets are waiting for you. After this past weekend, I will never do revolver without guest list or drink tickets.

The crowd...I have nothing against the barley legal girls but the frat boys have to go. I like to party, but with adults...get rid of the high school kids. The chicks will get me into jail.

I know you guys are new and have to become pals with the locals, but do your readers a favor...go to a club and pay for it...then give us an honest opinion. At the end, a review is an opinion...but I rather hear an honest one, rather than a biased one.

Truth Williams

p.s. good track choices.
Truth Williams,

Thank you for giving constructive criticism. Usually when we get criticism its "you suck" which believe it or not, doesn't help. While I don't think it's unknown that B.A.C. and myself frequent Revolver and Josh's other nights, because, yes I do know him and plently of others who work there as well, I've never RAVED about Revolver. I go there because I feel comfortable and I like the atmosphere even if its dead because I usually know everyone there. The only night I ever raved about was Black Lipstick, which during its opening night I honestly had the best time I had in a while. I know for a fact I wasn't the only person who thought that night BL was incredible.

Anyway, I actually feel Revolver is the most adult of the indie/hipster nights, Poplife and Spiderpussy is usually a bunch of high school kids (not their fault though, their door policy allows anyone 18+). Revolver used to be EXCLUSIVELY 21 and over and I'm sad to see they had to make it 18+ for girls.

Do I honestly like Revolver? Yes. Does it need some improvements? Hell yes.

Also, if I went to every club and actually paid for it, I'd be broke. Yes promoters kiss our ass in hopes of a mention, but I personally can see right through that bullshit. Then again, we have yet to do any serious reviews of any clubs in Miami, but expect to see that in 2007.

In the end, I appreciate your honesty and also that you gave us criticism beyond the words "your site sucks!"

Thank you,
Duran

P.S. I knew Josh prior to me working on this site. Also, he himself confessed to me about your hip-hop factoid.
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
just so you know, before the pawn shop days, revolver was 18+. wayyy back, the cover was even $2 or something.

also, that justice track 'we are your friends' is also a remix. original band's name is simian.
Not A Chance,

yes i knew about the pre-pawn shop days. also I know the Justice track really is Justice Vs. Simian and the original song is like 3 years old, I just omitted the fact.

Ghost of Miami Nights Past
ya the 21+ thing is new. it came about in the latter pawn shop days and through to stdioa....and we r ur friends is a remix named Justice vs. Simian - we are your friends
Just a debate...plus facts need to be put into place.

Revolver since the very beginning was 18+ friendly. Pawn Shop did stop the 18 year olds which was the near death of Revolver since that young ones are the bread and butter of Revolver. hat is the main reason Revolver had to leave Pawn Shop. As for Meza, 1800 club, 5922, Last Shoes, and especially Soho Lounge...it was a barley legal party. I know this because I've been going to Revolver since 1800 days and my sister use to date DJ Alex Caso (the original revolver dj…and probably the best next to Laz).

As for being a hipster/indie club....Revolver is filled with hipsters...but it hardly plays indie music. Mainstream Hip Hop with recycled 80's music is not indie. Maybe when they invite one of those fancy pant DJs to come down or when Lazaro Casanova comes from NY to spin it is somewhat indie...but the majority of the times it is crunk music for white kids. I do agree, you always see familiar people there and it is somewhat of a comfort zone...but then again, this is Miami....If you go out enough, you meet everyone in the “scene” and you can say the same thing about the other chic nights.

So your site "does not" suck and you should encourage debates such as these. Maybe the promoters will read this and improve their nights.

One more thing...I agree with Spider Pussy being saturated with lil kids but Poplife has always had a better adult/kid ratio than both of them….but really, at the end "They are all the same, only the names have changed."
oh my god meza... that was actually the beginning of poplife though. :)
i would point out, though, that the last criticisms turned into those of the nights themselves and not the site's coverage of them. i'll say that i think this site has potential but truth williams is on point--a little more of an at-least neutral outlook would do a lot to further the, ermm, discourse. (as much as there can be a 'discourse' about night clubs.)
More Factoids: Poplife and Revolver both started their established nights at Meza art gallery. That is when both clubs started feuding on who was "The Indie club night" of Miami. With all fairness, Josh M. and Alex C. were doing a night at the Hungry Sailor (the grove) prior to all that (Blow Up). Back in those days it was Brit Pop, 90's indie, 60's, Punk, and Soul....that was nearly 9 - 8 years ago.
i don't remember revolver being at meza. but i can't remember that far back any more. i thought it was just poplife--then known as life. i thought the earliest revolver was just blow-up @ the hungry sailor (RIP) and then moved to 1800 club?? and you're right. it was sooo britpop oriented then, when britpop was more of this mod-like subcultural thing and the whole latter-day 'hipster' thing had yet to really foment...

p.s. truth williams, you & i are both real productive during the day, eh? ;)
Working during the holidays gives ya free time to blog.

It is funny that the hipster phenomenon happened slowly. They first came with trucker hats, then they stole the brit pop shaggy hair cut, and then they thought they were rockstars...and then the nefarious girl came along and made them feel like celebrities with her fancy fotos.
Hey I'm British, I have an inherent right to done the pop shaggy hair~ As for hipster attitudes present day they suck. I started doing the indie scene in 2000 and the reason I was sucked in was the music and good nature of the people going to revolver/poplife/spiderpussy etc etc. Now a days you aint cool if you dont got a "hip" hair cut, tight jeans, tatoos, or snort. Many managers at clubs always mention while the hipster scene is cool they dont spend like rockstars more like hobos.
the hipster phenom exploded during the "The (Insert Band Name Here)" phase. The Strokes, The Vines, The White Stripes, The Hives, i could go on forever. and that was 2001ish. that was the climax of this whole hipster era. i definitely think you are right about the whole "celeb" thing Truth. photo blogs like LNP and the Cobrasnake have made "celebrities" out of nobodies. who knew lying half-naked, covered in vomit on a bathroom floor could do so much for your career? well thats until you find the need of going into the real world and getting an ACTUAL job and then the person you are interviewing with for the job recognizes you as "that naked girl from LNP"... and tells you "we'll call you if we are interested" but really they aren't going to call, because you're sort of a whore.
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
B.A.C. your HALF British, so technically you're sort of a mutt. and what are you trying to say B.A.C., out of those 4 categories i only fit in 1! am i not as cool as i thought i was?

...

nah, im awesome! :)
Ghost of Miami Nights Past
A big LOL to you Duran.
B.A.C....As a brit, you have every right to carry on with the shaggy haircuts.

By the way...most hipsters can't spend money in a club like a rockstar because they are too young to even buy drinks.

peace,
T.W.
I stopped expecting much from this website a long time ago. Now it all revolves around Pawn Shop.
interesting points, but chastising people for 'spending like hobos' puts you dangerously close to the attitude that fuels bottle-service clubs. some of us don't buy that many [way overpriced] drinks cos we're supporting ourselves and struggling with $$. it's not necessarily an age thing.
Well that's not exactly how managers of clubs put it (hobos) but you get the point. I don't like spending $10 for a shot or $300 for bottles so I generally don't (bottles never, shots on occasion). But because a younger crowd attends these "indie" nights naturally they have less disposable income, if any.
misread your comment, sorry. hung over--was out spending like a hobo last night. :)
