WMC Gallery: Random WMC Goodness

You didn't think we'd be done with the WMC photo madness. That's what happens when you are backlogged. Anyway, we had another snazzy photographer all the way from London town. Holler at Mike Jones' MySpace if you like what you see.

Photos are from a bunch of places like Bass Sessions 2 at Nocturnal, The Windish Agency Pool Party at the South Seas Hotel, Fool's Gold Party at White Room, in-stores at Puma and Armani Exchange and much more!

Best & Worst of WMC 2008

I was going to post this yesterday, but my fingers couldn't bare to put the letters W, M and C together one after the other. But I always like to give my opinion on things, so it wouldn't be me if I didn't tell you how wrong you are and how right I am. So without further ado, here are my picks for the best, worst and the just plain awful at WMC.

Best Party Fixed WMC Freakout @ Studio A

I would have given this to the Fool's Gold party at White Room except their sound system sucked. Still, the lineup Saturday at Studio A was superb and the fact that the venue had a wall of speakers to basically punched you in the face was just an added bonus. Boys Noize definitely was the star that night, but Simian Mobile Disco and Erol Alkan also brought it home.

Worst Party Any Beach Nighttime Events

All I heard was tales of woe from people who attended beach events. Rude door staff, super-expensive drinks and horrendous traffic killed the party mood for many. I'm tired of telling everyone Downtown is where it's at.

Biggest Surprise Fool's Gold Showcase Lineup

The published lineup was just a tease of who would show up to spin at White Room. Others who stopped by included Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT, Tommie Sunshine, Chromeo and from what I hear Groove Armada as well. There were reports that Justice was going to show up as well, but not sure if that ever materialized.

Most Underrated Drop The Lime

This guy is pretty fucking amazing. He blew me away at Downtown Riot, but really hit it out of the park at the South Seas pool party and the Scion event at the Raleigh. Definitely check him out!

Most Overrated Ultra Music Festival

I don't think I need to explain myself.

Breakthrough Calvin Harris

Mark my words, this guy will be big in the states in 2008. His performances during WMC only cemented that. I wonder if he is going to do a North American tour soon?

Most Overexposed MSTRKRFT

I would have given this to Boys Noize, but a lot of people really didn't care how many times he performed, they wanted to see him spin each and every time. However, with no new material released since 2006's The Looks, MSTRKRFT still managed to be everywhere during WMC. Really now? Actually they have a newly released track on iTunes called "Bounce" featuring N.O.R.E. which I'm not sure how I feel about.

The Tommy Lackner Version of a WMC Wrap Up

That's a relief. It's over and done with. We can relax, detox, eat on a regular human schedule, be bored/lonely, and use phones instead of text messaging. WMC 2008 is complete, seemingly a huge success by most accounts.

A word of thanks: I had an awesome time this year and it was fulfilling on a professional level as well. I'd like to thank the entire Miami Nights family and the extended fam; our "foreign correspondents" Victor and Mike; and the promoters and venues who generously and wisely chose to work closely with us during this week, especially Embrace, Future Mob, Pawn Shop, PlexiPR Betty Kang PR, and Studio A.

I didn't go to every party (who could?); I didn't even go to 25% of the parties I wanted to go to. But here are some conclusions I've drawn from the ones I did attend. Keep in mind that I may have self-selected some of these results by where I went

What was the same as 2007: Incredible music. So many great DJs that I suffer from paralysis of analysis and just decide to do whatever is easiest. Banging music that I may never forget and will totally spoil me once the local DJs go back to playing like local DJs. Awesome, unique people in every nook and cranny. The ability to actually get in to a club during WMC is way too random. Door policies, photo access and drink prices change at the drop of a hat, tons of delays.

Read on for the rest of my ranting, and be sure to add your thoughts in the comments section..

WMC Saturday Night Recap

Praise Jebus, WMC is over! God, I'm so over this shit it's not even funny. This has felt like a never ending weekend. But today marks the end, so for the next several days I don't want to go out, drink or do anything except sleep.

Last night I capped my WMC week by attending the Fixed WMC Freakout, which if you didn't go, you missed out on one hell of a party. Boys Noize killed it playing loud and hard that I think I no longer can hear anymore. Simian Mobile Disco put on a great show that included an amazing lighting system that pumped everyone up.

But my night wouldn't be normal if I didn't manage to embarrass myself. So I was by the bar -- don't ask me what time it was, I was completely drunk -- and I see Moby. Yes, Moby just hanging out, catching the show. I go "Oh my God! You're Moby!" And he politely smiles and says hello. And I blurt out "I love that track you did with Gwen Stefani." He goes "Yea, that was ages ago." For the life of me I couldn't name you a recent Moby track, to tell you the truth I don't even like Moby's music that much. Anyway, after saying that he gave me this weird look like I was some kind of freak, which I don't blame him, I'd give myself that look after what I said.

I also bumped into Calvin Harris and congratulated him on a great performance at the Raleigh on Friday. It sucked that I couldn't catch him at White Room, but his set and Boys Noize's set went on at the same time.  And he didn't give me a weird look like Moby did -- score!

WMC Friday Night Recap

The title is actually a misnomer since I went to some day events on Friday, which let me tell you are no where near as fun as the night events. See day events are mostly in South Beach which unfortunately due to the high volume of people this week, it just turns into one big clusterfuck of spring break frat boys and male Euro-trash in short-shorts clearly outlining their packages -- oh and of course DJs and industry people as well. On my walk to wherever the fuck I was going I saw Steve Aoki trotting his way up on Collins who stopped for a minute when he bumped into the MisShapes that were in head-to-toe black clothing that was completely inappropriate for how hot it was.

I first ventured into the Scion event at the Raleigh's pool, which if you've never seen it is absolutely gorgeous. There was a mix of plenty of hot bodies looking to catch the acts scheduled to perform and the occasional family with a WTF face who obviously realized they booked at the wrong time of year. Anyway, I'm not sure who was on when I got there but I notice the itinerary said Calvin Harris would be on at 6:15, so I scrambled out of there to check out a few more parties.

The Windish Agency event at South Seas had an amazing lineup. Unfortunately the South Seas pool area is as appealing as a wool sweater in Miami. To top it off, the hotel next door had a pool event as well and with no barrier between the two, the sound kept on bleeding. I was only able to catch Drop The Lime before I decided to leave.

Editor's Choice: Saturday Night WMC

So much to do on Saturday, so little time! One thing is for certain, skip Ultra's boring as hell lineup that isn't worth a dime. Instead focus the surrounding parties that will probably knock your damn socks off.

Fixed WMC Freakout @ Studio A

Hands down the best lineup of any party during WMC. It's almost unfair really to compare it to anything else. Simian Mobile Disco (LIVE!), Boys Noize and Erol Alkan alone make this event worth attending.

Calvin Harris @ White Room

This guy is already pop royalty across the pond. Here? Not so much. But catch this guy in probably the most intimate setting ever because I have a feeling after WMC Calvin Harris will be a superstar here in the States as well. And you can always say, "I remember when I say Harris at White Room before he was big."

Undocumented Artists @ Rokbar

MSTRKRFT, LA Riot and the Bloody Beatroots will all be in attendance to blow out the speakers at Rokbar. Also in the mix is hometown hero Lazaro Casanova who's star is rising fast. I'm already saying, "I knew Lazaro when he was just a resident DJ for Revolver."

Editor's Choice: Friday Night WMC

I should have posted this yesterday but WMC is kicking my ass, so deal with it. Here are the list of event you probably want to check out tonight:

The Social @ Snatch

It's Miami Nights approved so you know it's going to be good. DJ Mehdi, Annie Mac, VNDLSM and more rock the house tonight, plus Snatch's cozy environment gives you a break from all those damn mega-clubs.

Payback @ Charcoal Studios

Warehouse party! Whoo-hoo! There is nothing I like more than a warehouse party because it always has a certain dangerous feeling to it like you are doing something illegal. Well I think this one is pretty legit so no fear here. Switch, Blaqstarr, Cosmo Baker, Blu Jemz and more will all be in attendance.

Ultra Music Festival Day 1 @ Bicentennial Park

I give props where props are due and while overall Ultra's lineup is disappointing, Day 1 is exciting enough on its own and worth attending. Justice will be make their only appearance during WMC tonight (well rumor is at the Radio 1 pool party as well, but whatever that has yet to be seen). Also in the mix Junkie XL, Erol Alkan, Deadmau5, M.A.N.D.Y. and Digitalism's only live performance.

Fool's Gold Showcase @ White Room

Who says nothing is free during WMC? Well nobody told the Fool's Gold label. DJ Mehdi headlines with a surprise special guest a "Noizy Boy?" -- hmmmm. Plus A-Trak, Sinden, Treasure Fingers and more ALL FREE!

Wednesday Night Recap

Okay, now I really don't know how I am awake. Last night obviously was Miami Nights' 2 Year Anniversary at Downtown Riot 2 at Studio A. Shit was off the proverbial chain. Annie Mac is gorgeous in person, pictures don't even do her justice. And she can fucking spin. Highlight was a remix of Boys Noize's "Oh". Still trying to figure out which remix it is though. But the star last night was undeniably Sinden. He did his signature hip-hop meets house and had the crowd eating out of his hand.

Around 4 a.m. I decided to go home and nap for an hour and return for the Dirtybird afterhours party also at Studio A. So I came back around 5:30 and the place was still fucking jumping. Really techno-y and dark, but very good. Finally called it quits around 6:45 and went home and proceeded to stay up drinking beer until 9 a.m. So yea, I'm suppose to go to the Scion event at the Raleigh today but I'm going to need some sunglasses to hide my cracked out eyes.

Update from Lackner: Thanks to everyone who came out! From what I recall, I had a great time. Tres bien!

Editor's Choice: Thursday Night WMC

So tomorrow we really start to get into gooey center of Winter Music Conference. Choices start to get harder and harder, but don't worry I'm here to separate the good from the bad. So here are my choices for not-to-be-missed parties for Thursday.

Get Physical 2 @ Studio A

Come on people, this party was killer last year so you know it's going to be a killer this year as well. And with M.A.N.D.Y., Junior Boys, Heidi and more you know that shit is going to be like a Berlin warehouse party. Ze party iz good.

Wish You Were Here @ Suite/Snatch

With the SMAC and Money Shot crews behind this venture you know this is going to be one hell of a party. A-Trak, Craze, Klever, Eli Escobar, Blu Jemz, Tittsworth and Treasure Fingers are just some of the names on the bill. Plus Roxy Cottontail is pulling hosting duties -- sweet!

Banana Split/Flamingo Nights @ Set

Steve Aoki brings his famous LA party to Miami for conference. On the bill is the man himself plus MSTRKRFT, LA Riots, Eli Escobar, DJ AM, Pase Rock and the act that makes this event worthwhile, the Bloody Beatroots. While all of this is happening upstairs, in the mainroom Fedde Le Grand, Green Velvet and more will be bringing in the house beats.

Now leave you with a video in honor of the Get Physical party. Sorry I can't think of the Get Physical label without thinking of the Olivia Newton-John song. Let me here your body talk -- masterpiece.

WMC Tuesday Night Recap

I wish life could keep the noise down, I'm so fucking hungover it's not even funny. I'm surprised I'm even awake right now. So last night I started my WMC week. I started at PS14 for the Spiderpussy party. While I was there the MisShapes showed up, who I imagine came from the MOCA event they hosted earlier last night. After that I went to the DFA party at Rokbar where there was open bar! Open bar and WMC are a rarity, so kudos to Rokbar.

After that I crossed over the causeway once more and went back to PS14 grabbed a drink (here is where it started getting blurry and messy) and headed over to Vagabond for the URB/TS1 party. Got to admit, the place was a little dead and it sort of shocked me. I arrived just in time to catch Tommie Sunshine but I was dissapointed to find out the LA Riots had already went on. I mean it was only like 1:30, why the hell did LA Riots play that early?

My verdict for Tuesday: a little slow, but most people don't start partying on Tuesday so I'm not surprised. Oh, and I need some ibuprofen.

Editor's Choice: Wednesday Night WMC

Are you retarded? I'm not about to tell you to go anywhere else tomorrow except for the Downtown Riot 2 party brought to you by Embrace, Future Mob and Poplife at Studio A where Miami Nights will be celebrating its 2 Year Anniversary. If you go anywhere else, puppies will die! Do you want to see puppies die?

Switch, Sinden, Jesse Rose, Annie Mac, Duke Dumont and Drop The Lime will all be on hand to pump the jams. And as an added bonus, you can stay at Studio A for the afterhours Dirtybird party featuring Claude Vonstroke, Justin Martin, Worthy, Christian Martin, Tanner Ross and Riva Starr for no extra cost! So party until noon if you'd like!

See you there!

WMC Tuesday Addendum: A Sleeper Party and A Shitty Party

I know I'm not the only Miamian who found being at work today an unbearable effort standing in the way of my impending partying. I'm trying my hardest to not blow all my cash before the weekend and am therefore staying far away from Mansion's amazing party tonight. I think The Vag is unbeatable tonight (I say HeartsRevolution steals the show) but there are other options, some promising and others promising to suck.

The Shitty Party: Paul Oakenfold and Cee-Lo Green at Mansion 7PM - Now don't get me wrong, I love me some Cee-Lo Green - but you'll have to practically pay me to see Oakenfold (the only mainstream DJ too terrible for Ultra) again after that Bacardi B-Live crap I stayed about 20 minutes for. This early party at Mansion is supposedly Oakenfold's debut of some video game soundtrack. I'm only mentioning this because I'd managed to convince myself Cee-Lo could make this bearable, before I realized that no, I shouldn't delude myself. Give us a proper Gnarls Barkley show goddamnit.

The Sleeper Party: DFA/Revolver Party at Rokbar - Talk about last minute, the only time New York collective DFA peeks it's disco ball shaped head out during WMC wasn't even on the Rokbar WMC flyer. And it's a damn shame cause DFA (home to LCD Soundsystem and Hercules and Love Affair, not that they'll be there) is still the most unique sounding dance imprint around. There's an open bar from 11-12 and additional sets by Fixed residents JDH and Dave P.

The sleeper flyer is after the jump.

WMC Interview: Dave P (Fixed NYC)

Dave P has been one-half of the duo that puts one of New York's hottest Saturday night parties. Fixed packs people into Brooklyn's Studio B (yes, the sister club to our Studio A), booking amazing acts like Erol Alkan, Digitalism, Soulwax, M.A.N.D.Y., Mr. Oizo, Simian Mobile Disco, Hot Chip and Para One -- just to name a few. He also is one of their resident DJs along with JDH.

Dave took some time to answer questions about the pressure to follow up last year's amazing Fixed party, rumors of a monthly Fixed Miami party and the hard work of a promoter. He too doesn't understand my hatred of all caps. I forgive him though.

MN: Last year's WMC Fixed event was a huge success and probably one of the most talked about parties. Are you feeling any pressure this year to deliver?

DP: LAST YEAR’S PARTY WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST PARTIES OF THE CONFERENCE. JOSH (JDH, MY PARTNER) AND I WERE REALLY HAPPY WITH IT. I DO FEEL SOME PRESSURE TO MAKE THIS YEAR EVEN BETTER AND HONESTLY I THINK THIS YEAR’S LINEUP IS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. ONE THING THAT I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IS THE DIVERSITY IN THE LINEUP THIS YEAR. LAST YEAR’S LINEUP WAS INCREDIBLE BUT LACKED DIVERSITY, AND NOW THIS YEAR WE’VE  HAND PICKED WHO WE THINK ARE THE BEST ARTISTS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE GENRES TO MAKE WHAT I THINK IS AGAIN ONE OF THE BEST LINEUPS OF THE CONFERENCE. THIS IS DEFINITELY GOING TO BE A TOTAL RAGER AND I THINK IT WILL DEFINITELY BE OUR BEST WMC PARTY YET!
