GenArts Shop Miami seeking Designers & Boutiques

Another year, another GenArt Shop Miami. I personally didn't make it last year but our resident Lady Wrangler made it out and raved about Shop Miami 2007, though she did have her qualms with the liquor selection (Where is the Bombay sponsorship??)....That aside this years event is being held June 26th at the Moore Building in the Design District.

Best of all they are looking for emerging designers and boutiques to take part and in this years event. All you need to do is submit a Professional Bio and/or Press Kit and low resolution jpg images showing at least 6 different designs (must be actual clothes or accessories, no sketches accepted) to miami@genart.org. Last day to submit the requirements is May 21st so get your shit together you starving designers. Click the jump to get all the details. Good luck!

Things are much worse than they seem

In the past three days, I've learned that two separate girls that I've seen out around the scene are hookers. I'm keeping my mouth shut, but if you spend some time on Craigslist you'll find them. Beware, gentlemen.

New possible Miami reality show

Is today blog about Miami people day? Gawker reports Jose "Jochi" Ortiz, contributing editor for Ocean Drive magazine and co-owner of Supermarket Creative Agency, and Nick D'Annunzio, co-owner of Tara Ink and husband of Tara Solomon, are going to be in some new reality show titled Mean Boys along with New York/Miami socialite Fabian Basabe. If the names go over your head you obviously have a life.

Last reality show that centered around Miami that I can remember was 8th & Ocean, and I don't think I need to remind anyone how utterly boring that shit was. I've heard so many rumors about reality shows in Miami, including one that was suppose to focus on Poplife and Pawn Shop back when Dirty Disco was alive, so we'll see if this actually pans out.

New Reality Show, put your makeup on

Just got this in from the good people who brought us the incredibly entertaining (*sarcasm*) show on VH1 Hogan Knows Best (Thank god I don't have cable). Pink Sneakers Productions is looking for talented liars, hams, self centered twits and the likes for their reality show. Let's be honest, you gotta be one of the above if you wanna make it on TV. But seriously here are the requirements. They are currently looking for men and women who:
  • Appear to be in their late 20's to early 30's
  • are unmarried, but not necessarily unattached
  • are interested in having their lives documented on national television
  • live a fascinating life filled with exciting & dramatic stories

Review: Favela Chic @ Mokai

I'm in love -- with this hot as fuck night named Favela Chic at Mokai. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. Hot venue, hot people and hot music. For those who haven't been, Mokai is done in a sort of a living room style first pioneered in South Beach in the '90s, where there is more seating than actual dancefloor space. The decor was simple yet impressive at the same time. And it might just be the newness of it all, but it looked like the staff actual takes time to clean and make sure the place looks good.

Of course, Mokai caters to a different clientele: business men, celebrities and Miami's elite, but Favela Chic still seemed very down to earth to me even though the venue wasn't. It was refreshing really, because I've been to dingy bars where I've felt scrutinized harder than I did at Mokai. That's not to say Mokai isn't like every other high-end lounge in Miami. There was a sizable crowd outside pleading with the door staff for admittance, and I don't blame them, the place is hot.

But on to the music. When I entered Ross One was on the decks and he killed it with a nice mix of rock, house, indie, pop, hip-hop and, of course, Brazilian baile funk. Tracks by Kanye West, Gwen Stefani, M.I.A., Justice and Daft Punk had the crowd eating out of the DJs hand. But more impressive than the track selection was the talent Ross One (and I believe there were more DJs, not sure) possesses when mixing in tracks to make for one continuous flow of aural bliss. And for a place that prides itself for its nightlife, it's rare to find a DJ in Miami this good. Yes Ross, you can feel proud that you've made my (very) short list of Miami DJs that I love.

So what are you waiting for? Go check out the night. Yes it's on a Tuesday and you probably have to go to work in the morning. But if there is any night worth getting fired for, it's probably Favela Chic.

Stay tuned for the photo gallery of the night!
