I'm in love -- with this hot as fuck night named Favela Chic at Mokai. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. Hot venue, hot people and hot music. For those who haven't been, Mokai is done in a sort of a living room style first pioneered in South Beach in the '90s, where there is more seating than actual dancefloor space. The decor was simple yet impressive at the same time. And it might just be the newness of it all, but it looked like the staff actual takes time to clean and make sure the place looks good.
Of course, Mokai caters to a different clientele: business men, celebrities and Miami's elite, but Favela Chic still seemed very down to earth to me even though the venue wasn't. It was refreshing really, because I've been to dingy bars where I've felt scrutinized harder than I did at Mokai. That's not to say Mokai isn't like every other high-end lounge in Miami. There was a sizable crowd outside pleading with the door staff for admittance, and I don't blame them, the place is hot.
But on to the music. When I entered Ross One was on the decks and he killed it with a nice mix of rock, house, indie, pop, hip-hop and, of course, Brazilian baile funk. Tracks by Kanye West, Gwen Stefani, M.I.A., Justice and Daft Punk had the crowd eating out of the DJs hand. But more impressive than the track selection was the talent Ross One (and I believe there were more DJs, not sure) possesses when mixing in tracks to make for one continuous flow of aural bliss. And for a place that prides itself for its nightlife, it's rare to find a DJ in Miami this good. Yes Ross, you can feel proud that you've made my (very) short list of Miami DJs that I love.
So what are you waiting for? Go check out the night. Yes it's on a Tuesday and you probably have to go to work in the morning. But if there is any night worth getting fired for, it's probably Favela Chic.
Stay tuned for the photo gallery of the night!
