Local Spotlight: Gold Saturn

Hey everyone, remember our resident gay David Jon? Yea, Lackner misses him so much he cries himself to sleep at night. He was our resident Miami Gay savant but moved on to bigger and better things. After he realized we weren't gonna pay him a red cent for all the short term work he put into Miami Nights he quickly flipped us the bird and moved on.

We recently ran into David Jon at the Fresh Faces event and he informed us he is now a designer. He just launched his very own label called Gold Saturn, which he said is named after the first car he ever owned. Er, I guess that's a good way to come up with a name.

Anyway, so far he is designing nifty tops for both men and women with neo-hippie logos and phrases, with a touch of indie-style to boot. Get 'em, love 'em, wear 'em out.  Here's what David Jon has to say about his line and goals:

I could never decide a career path, I was always between graphic design and fashion... So I chose both! Gold Saturn is a perfect balance between the two fields because although I am selling fashion, it's the graphic that makes it special. It all started during college at the Art Institute in Miami, I rocked my custom tees to class daily and it wasn't long before classmates took note. Soon enough countless peers were sporting my designs as well, and a local boutique decided to make an order. It was then that I realized this was my true calling. I just want to create trippy, badass clothes that you would want to wear everyday.

Although the line has attracted Miami's movers & shakers, I don't have plans to create Red Carpet gowns any time soon. Radiating effortless style, Gold Saturn is casual, comfortable and fashionable, and each piece can always work with anything. Gold Saturn strikes a delicate balance of being edgy and vintage, without being over-the-top trendy. The line can be purchased at www.GoldSaturn.com

Good Luck David Jon! If you like his designs we encourage you to buy something from his webby Gold Saturn (so we can stop getting his mean emails about us owing him money...PSH).

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim

Let me start off by questioning the title of this post. Doesn't it seem odd? Fashion Week Swim? I know, it's the fashion week for swim wear. But wouldn't 'Fashion Week Swim Wear' have sounded better? Oh well who honestly gives a shit. Next week from July 18-21 at the Raleigh Hotel models will be strutting their stuff in designer bikinis and one pieces for those lucky enough to get the invite to this invitation only event. We would love to attend but unfortunately there is a $90 press fee and that cuts deeply into our "would rather be inebriated having fun elsewhere than the beach" budget. Not to mention were in the red already this month due to terrible accounting on Lackners part.

Just so you know how ueber this event is gonna be, the Herald has heard rumors that the fashion week is expecting the likes of Brooke Hogan, the painfully talentless big boned blond, D list elites the Kardahsians and Miami Nights favorite carpet munching crack whore Lindsey Lohan. Sounds like its going to be a smashing event! If any of our loyal readers goes and cares to share some deetz feel free to comment.

For more info visit Fashion Week Swim webby.

Chanel Cruise Collection @ The Raleigh

Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel premiered the 2008-09 Cruise Collection yesterday at the Raleigh. I really wanted to go because I need to find myself a rich-ass MILF or GILF -- whatever, I'm not picky as long as the bitch is rich. A lot of people I know got to attend the show, why? I don't know; their poor asses couldn't afford the Kleenex the models eat in order to keep the hunger pains at bay. I'd like to think my invite was lost in the mail -- yep, that's it! Obviously, Chanel invited us! It must have been some issue with the U.S. Postal Service.

Anyway the fucking runway supposedly cost like a bajillion dollars and they had the U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming team do some shit that I probably wouldn't have cared for any way. But if I may interject here, aren't we in an economic recession? Who the fuck is thinking of dropping $10,000 on a Chanel outfit and high-tailing it to St. Barts when the country's economic future looks about as bright as a hungry kid in Myanmar?

In case you want to live vicariously the life you'll probably never be able to afford, here is a short video of the show courtesy of Miami Herald. Also below is a nifty YouTube video in case you can't get enough.

Karelle Levy (KRELwear) wins Style Wars

Hey, remember when the House of Diehl came to the White Room as part of the Style Wars Tour? Well, if you didn't know local designer Karelle Levy, owner of the local label KRELwear, won the Miami round, earning her a spot in the final event in New York to determine the Style Wars champion. Well, guess what? Levy cleaned house and showed the contestants from New York, San Fransisco, Los Angeles and Chicago that Miami has got its style in check.

The New York Times even got on the ball and covered this shit. Score 1 for Miami! I always knew New York and Los Angeles were cities full of fucking losers. And in case you forgot what all the fuss was about, below is a video courtesy of Nefarious Girl.

GenArts Shop Miami seeking Designers & Boutiques

Another year, another GenArt Shop Miami. I personally didn't make it last year but our resident Lady Wrangler made it out and raved about Shop Miami 2007, though she did have her qualms with the liquor selection (Where is the Bombay sponsorship??)....That aside this years event is being held June 26th at the Moore Building in the Design District.

Best of all they are looking for emerging designers and boutiques to take part and in this years event. All you need to do is submit a Professional Bio and/or Press Kit and low resolution jpg images showing at least 6 different designs (must be actual clothes or accessories, no sketches accepted) to miami@genart.org. Last day to submit the requirements is May 21st so get your shit together you starving designers. Click the jump to get all the details. Good luck!

Shampology Salon and Supply

So I usually get my hair cut at Contesta Rock Hair on the Beach, but shit if I don't hate having to drive over the causeway, find parking and walk (usually hungover) several blocks to Espanola Way. So when an e-mailed popped up in my inbox from salon owner/stylist Danny Dillon asking us to check out his salon, Shampology, in the Design District I thought "Why not?" I needed a haircut, badly. I had neglected to cut my hair for a while because of all the moving around I had recently done and the new job I started. Plus, it was the Design District, just 5 minutes from where I live and that meant I didn't have to drive to the Beach.

The salon is tucked away in one of the many indoor retail spaces far away from street view that if you didn't know it was located there you'd completely miss it. The salon itself is modern looking yet warm enough that it's inviting, but I couldn't help but notice how empty it was. The salon basically consists of Dillon and his assistant, which I don't mind; I hate loud and busy salons. However, I had to ask Dillon if he is able to get any business this way, but he insist that he works mostly on referral service and faithful clientel.

There is no doubt that Dillon is a talented stylist, he worked for several years at Ego Trip Salon in Miami Beach, often considered one of the best, if not the best salon, in Miami. Normally stylist cut my hair in 10 to 15 minutes, quickly rushing me out of the chair for the next client. I hate feeling of being rushed and so it was great to see that Dillon did not rush the appointment, in fact he took the time to talk to me about exactly what I wanted, cut my hair meticulously and even gave me tips on styling and hair maintenance.

So if you are looking for a great one-on-one consultation and cut, definitely check out Shampology and call 305-576-1530 for an appointment. The salon is located at 180 NE 39th St., Design District, with free valet parking across the street at Brosia -- take that South Beach!

Miami Fashion Week starts tomorrow

Miami Fashion Week begins with the designer + guest reception/official kick off party at Gary Nader Fine Art in Wynwood. By invite only, I definitely can't get in, but wish I could (secret tips anybody??) All the fashion exhibits will be held this year at Soho Studios on 21st Street & 1st Avenue in Wynwood (The space where PULSE was held Across from Charcoal Studios) starting tomorrow (Wednesday, April 9) with the press conference and lingerie showcase.

Surrounding the event are slews of chic afterparties/ridiculous soirée's and pop up events which I hope (srsly) our blogger crew gets their hands on. Hopefully I get at least a taste of how the fashion scene throws it down. I find fashion often to overtake the execution of idealizing beauty much more so than much of the fine art today, that is supposedly meant to do so. Damn artists.

Rag Trade for sale

Everyone's favorite Design District boutique Rag Trade is for sale. Why? Owner Stephanie Spiegel is moving to Israel to live on an organic farm. Um, yeah. Anywho, its selling for $20,000, but Spiegel would also consider any investors. I know a lot of people who would die if this place ends up closing down, so some please save Rag Trade from extinction.

I leave you with an interview Plum Miami Beach did with Spiegel about two weeks ago. She talks about the store and its vintage goods.

Review: SNIP Salon

With the economy in the toilet, all my beauty treatments have been suspended until further notice. That means plucking my own eyebrows, painting my own nails and buying Queen Helene’s $3.99 Mint Julep Facial Mask at CVS. Oh, the horror! There’s nothing like settling for beer budget beauty solutions when you’re a gal with champagne taste.

Lucky for us there’s SNIP Salon. Located on 456 Arthur Godfrey Road in a building that used to house the CIA headquarters, SNIP can wax and peel perfection without requiring fingerprints or 49 forms of ID. Offering the works: haircuts, manicures, pedicures, facials, massage and hair removal of all kinds.

Tonight: Public School Launch @ Arrive

Arrive is arguably one the city's most popular men's boutique clothing store. It offers plenty of high-end clothing and accessories for those who don't want be caught in the awkward situation of wearing the same thing as someone else (damn you Urban Outfitters for putting me in that position!). Well seems like the owners of Arrive aren't satisfied hawking someone else's goods and are now offering their own menswear collection called Public School.

Those who stop by tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. will be able to check out the collection in its entirety which will be sold exclusively at Arrive. For those looking for a bargain, the store will have last seasons goods marked 50 to 75 percent off. Induce (Loop, Poplife) will be providing the shopping music while 10 Cane Rum provides the complimentary cocktails. After party will be at Black Lipstick, upstairs at Set.

Saturday: Miami Style Battle @ Stoli Hotel

There has been many great wars fought on this earth, but none might be more important than the one which will occur this Saturday. There will be a lot of causalities in the form of bruised egos and nipple slips. Yes people, House of Diehl is back! On Saturday they will present their greatest fashion battle yet as they pit artists vs. designers in their Miami Style Battle.

If you attended the Style Wars event late last year at White Room, you know what goes down. Basically its guerilla fashion design that is made right before your eyes. Participants have merely minutes to create an outfit and have it go down the runway -- and those cry babies on Project Runway think they have it tough.

Where will this battle take place? The hottest (well, only) faux hotel in town, Stoli Hotel of course. In addition to the House of Diehl event, New York fashionista/rapper Roxy Cottontail will be hitting the decks. But how hard is it to persuade you to go to a Saturday event where Stoli will be served free from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.? Yea, I didn't think so. Also, make sure to stop by at the after party at Poplife. E-mail to RSVP to is on the flier!

Also as a bonus, I've included a video by Nefarious Girl from last year's Miami Style Wars:

Gen Art looking for undiscovered designers

Gen Art is at it again with its 5th Annual Fresh Faces in Fashion event, and if you are a budding fashion designer, listen up! Gen Art is looking for talented fashion, swimwear and accessory designer based in Florida or Georgia to participate in the event. This could easily be your big break since the event is attended by press, buyers, celebrities and fashion industry professionals. Miami Nights attend last year documenting the event. While I didn't go, Lackner, B.A.C. and Lady Wrangler all attended and were really impressed at the high production values and large turnout. So yes, this is a pretty big deal if you get selected. This isn't some lame club fashion show -- trust me, it's legit.

The event is the largest showcase for emerging designers in the United States. Designers who have gained exposure from the event include Zac Posen, Rebecca Taylor, Uli Herzner, Chaiken, Keenan Duffy, Louis Verdad, Shoshanna, Vena Cava and more.

Interested? More information on how to submit your work for consideration after the jump.

GenArts Shop Miami

I'm really not the fashionista as many of you know. I like to sport my dirty chucks, snug jeans and tshirt all to much and couldn't care less about accessories. Don't get me wrong, have I ever though about buying a snazzy vest, a slick fedora or my new favorite accy the turban? Of course, especially the turban cause nothings more chic right now than the terrorist look. But I digress, Thursday GenArt brings us another edition of Shop Miami featuring way to many designers and boutiques to list here.

If you are the proverbial Miami fashionista though this is a great way to get your hands on those fresh Fall fashion styles that don't come off the assembly lines. An open bar, complimentary beauty services, a special fashion presentation and more will be provided in addition to your mounting credit card debt. More info here and click here for flier.

Thursday, October 25th
6:00 - 7:00pm: VIP Only Private Pre-sale

So you think you're a Miami Model?

Ya ya, we all hear it in Miami. What do you do for a living you ask a moderately pretty girl at a bar or club with the same tired answer "Well I work at American Apparel but I just do that to support my modeling career"....Pfffft...Everyone's a model in Miami but after seeing the quality of models at this show (click the slide show link) I have to seriously question the "talent" we have here in Miami. Anyway I digress. If you claim, think, aspire to be a model and want to be a reality TV whore then there is an open casting call for a new show debuting on E!. Read below for info:

Casting Female Models In MIAMI for NEW E! TV Show...

Entertainment Television is looking for Female Models (no height requirement) between 18-28 to star in a TV show tentatively called "Last Model Standing" shooting the end of October in South Beach. The show will feature 6 models as they compete for a coveted magazine spread or similar high profile engagement. All participants will receive fantastic exposure on national television, as well as a chance at glamorous prize package.

Please email me or at TOTALREALITYCASTING@AOL.COM with photo, contact, and a short bio about yourself. PLEASE Including why you want to be a model or how you got into modeling and ALSO why you would be perfect for the show.

If we are interested we will contact you for an interview. CASTING WILL BE HELD IN SOUTH BEACH

HAHAH, no height requirement? I can see it now, every Miami/Hialeah chonga and Kendall wannabe wearing their HUGE wedge heels and their "the bigger the hoop the bigger the hoe" earings.

Kraftworks @ Ragtrade this Saturday

I've always meant to post something regarding this but by Friday Thursday I'm already drunk and stumbling like a cracked out hobo and computers seem alien to me. Anyhow, Kraftworks is a nice project the good people over at Ragtrade put together to highlight local vendors, artists and music in addition to environmental awareness (Let me stop you right now Duran you hippie hating whore). Also bring all your old batteries to be disposed of properly and bring your old showerhead to KRAFTWORKS and trade it in for a brand new Ultra Low Flow head. Not only is it a place to buy hip, cheap clothes but a chance to do good by mother nature. Ragtrade is located on the corner of NE 2 Ave & 46 Street.

Getting the royal Herald treatment

And by Herald treatment I don't mean shitty news coverage about a kitten nobody cares about that got stuck in a storm drain. Fellow Miami bloggers 2 Live Looks got a nice piece written on them about their Miami trend documenting blog. They even got a narrated slideshow. I'll say it once and I'll say it again, SoBe fashion can't compare the the Parkwest/Wynwood/Design District fashion. Congrats boys and girl.
