Local theater. Two words that will send almost everone I know running and screaming for the nearest cash bar. Over the years a number of my friends have invited me out (read: please buy a ticket) to one of there local productions of some play. At first the idea seemed novel and amusing. I quickly realized that I would rather have teeth pulled than sit through another local production of David Mamet's (insert anyone of his works that ended up being acetd to a bloody pulp). So I promised myself "NEVER AGAIN". So you can imagine my delight when I was asked to attend the opening night of "Hombres En Fin" an all Spanish production written and directed by local playwright Cesar Mite.
I put my skepticism aside and headed over to the Deauville Beach Resort and was very surprised to see the facilities. Who knew this place had such a great stage?!?! Once the show began it quickly became immersed in the witty writing, and hysterical interpretation of the characters. "Hombres En Fin" is a hysterical comedy of errors with quick sharp dialog and some of the funniest one-liners I've heard... ever. I was near tears at intermission. Notable performances by Nicholas Machado (as Gustavo Enrique) and Robert Levarmann (as Jorge Enrique), not to mention a cameo by local diva Marytrini. This is one local show that is worth supporting. "Hombres En Fin" runs from now until April 4, 2010. For more information, including tickets go to http://www.hombresenfin.com/. The Deauville Beach Resort is located at 6701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL.
**UPDATE: due to very popular demand, the following dates have been added April 16, 18, 23, and 25, 2010. Be sure to reserve your tickets before they go!**
The girls at Pandora Events aren't going to be left out of the WMC fun. It's been a while since I hit up Sweet @ Mova (F.K.A. Halo), but if I know anything about these girls, it's that they know how to have a good time. With an all female lineup I can only hope that they didn't sacrifice talent for kitsch. Fear not people, this party is not chick strict.
"Girls on the Decks" goes down tonight, Thursday March 25 at Mova. No cover and some tempting drink specials ($8.00 Belvedere) could pull in a good crowd. Mova is located just off Lincoln Rd at 1625 Michigan Avenue, South Beach.
Scavenger hunts were something I adored as a child. Knowing my parents put time into hiding things in the neighborhood and creating clues to follow for me and my friend always made me happy. It also reminded of how much better my parents were than the other has beens on the block. That's why I always try to relive these moments as an adult, hoping those wonderful memories will cloud out my depressed sorry existence of writing mindlessly for this blog.
A good friend of mine mentioned to me a while back that he would be putting together a scavenger hunt on the beach for the Alzheimer's Association. What a nice gesture I thought to myself, thinking this friend would never follow through. Lo and behold though he made me eat my shoe and got me to sign up for The Big Scramble. Granted it won't be for anything we normally push here on MN (loose chicks, free bottles etc) but helping to find a cure for what I call "old person going ape shit syndrome" is worth the time and effort. Below is a brief description of the event with links. Do yourself a favor and tell your friends to get off their overweight asses and support the cause.
Do you want to have a BANG out fun time while raising money for a great cause? Your mission is to get yourself and a few friends out to race thru South Beach. Make a team with your friends, daughters, sons, parents, siblings, friends, coworkers, or get the boss on board as a team building exercise.
Teams can be comprised of two, three or four persons. You'll count on your collective wisdom to develop race strategy, plan your route, and make key decisions. You can walk, run, or take public transportation to arrive at checkpoint (CP) locations. It is estimated the course will last between 1.5 - 4 hours depending how quickly you move and your decisions.
For more information, visit the The Big Scramble event on facebook. For complete details, visit TheBigScramble.com. Whether you donate $5 or or any other value it is greatly appreciated. Every bit helps!
I'm a bit late to the party on this one (as always) but I just saw something jarring on Rakontur: hidden camera video of Tremont Towing criminals staffers going through the trunks of cars they've towed! It's not news any more but the more I can do to undermine those scumbag towing companies (who basically give you no recourse to complain if you ever want your car back) is good in my book, so I'm posting it anyway.
Tonight is the grand opening of The Strip, a new lounge on Lincoln Road with an unusual twist. Occupying the old (and dearly missed at times) O Asian Grill -- nee Rumi -- space, The Strip aims to provide a "neo-Burlesque" experience mixing in live performance, comedy, some nakey womenz, and traditional dance music. Sound strange? General Manager James Butler explains more in this unusually softballish interview on NBC Nite Talk.
Will it work? The former O venue is in a great location and has an unusual layout with some amazing dramatic qualities. In the past this has both helped and hurt the lessee because these quirks (namely: terrible floor layout, bar surface availability and customer flow) have made it difficult to turn a solid profit there, but these quirks may work in favor of The Strip's unusual plans.
On the other hand, Burlesque is second only to "\../ LIVE MUSIC BRO!!! \../" as an alternative Miami club concept that is often tried but hard to get right. The ideal format for this space would combine elements of Pawn Shop's eclectic, kooky customer experience with a creative director that has a solid grasp of interactive performance and the ability to "read" the atmosphere and adapt the show to suit. I'm picturing someone from Cirque du Soleil who had a nasty run-in with middle aged drug and alcohol abuse. The team there would be wise to remember that drunk obnoxious tourists and felonious Miami club patrons do not have the most delicate palate for artistic innovation and show.
I'll retire from my arm chair club owner responsiblities for tonight: see you at the grand opening!
I'm gonna make this short. I was not blessed with the ablity to rant like Lackner nor the ability to coerce under age girls so here are your Saturday night WMC suggestions:
Get Physical Miami @ Studio K (formerly Studio A) featuring: M.A.N.D.Y vs Booka Shade, Matthew Dear, AudioFly, Italoboyz and more. In our my opinion the best ongoing party during WMC for the past few years. Don't believe me? See last years Get Physical Miami for yourself.
Fool's Gold @ The White Room featuring: A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, DJ Mehdi, LA Riots and many more. It's FREE. Do yourself a favor and listen to us.
Sasha @ Shine in the Shelborne Hotel. I know generally we don't endorse trance but Sasha is a legend. Just do it if you are afraid of the homeless in Downtown Miami.
Have fun and be safe! And remember, just cause a panhandler is literate doesn't mean they aren't out to get ya....Ha just kidding, Miami is truly safer Sarajevo. Really.....
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!~ There's nothing like free in this recession laden world we now find ourselves in. The good people of Eatskeet.com and Hipster Runoff are throwing "A Party Worth Blogging About" and the lineup is incredible.
The event is today and kicks off at 11am to 6pm on the Ganesvoort South Rooftop Pool. WMC'ers can expect to run into Rony Alwin (ronysphotobooth), Bronques of lastnightsparty.com, and Mark at the Cobrasnake. For you hipsters this must be a dream come true. Imagine you can be one of the regretful many that find themselves half naked online after a day of binging. Take some time to throw your feces stained American Apparel underwear away now before reading the lineup. We wouldn't want you uncomfortable in any way. You can RSVP for this FREE event by going to EatSkeet.com/RSVP and listen to a sample mix of the music you will be drinking to that day from the MN player below (Tacklisting after the jump). The mix is courtesy of Eatskeet.com. Check out this lineup for the day:
Felix Cartal
Acid Girls
Ocelot
Le Castlevania
Skeet Skeet
Nick Catchdubs
Tittsworth
Designer Drugs
LA Riots
Franki Chan
For entire list of DJs click the thumbnail up top. Also, I'm not certain I like such colorful flyers. Also, how long are each DJs sets gonna be? Not sure I like events with so many Djs squished into one event...Also, I'm not sure I really know much about anything.
Our readers know we lean towards Electro on this blog so it's fitting Mansion has arguably the best electro lineup tonight for WMC. The lineup is pretty sick with Benny Benassi, Calvin Harris (dj set), The Bloody Beetroots, Sneaky Sound System LIVE, Joachim Garraud, LA Riots and Don Rimini spinning the dirtiest electro this side of the Miami River. Tickets for this event are $30 and can be purchased here. Arrive early as the line for Mansion for these events is usually 200 deep. If I am not mistaken it is also the album launch party for The Bloody Beetroots, so expect to hear a lot of new ass shaking, spleen shattering grittiness.
How should I start this post...Click the thumbnail and read that image first for a larger view and look at all those delicious events this week at the Shelborne and Shine nightclub. It would be impossible for me to highlight every singe one, so I'm gonna take the lazy route and highlight what I think are the standouts (though everything at the Shelborne this week looks pretty amazing).

The Bloody Beetroots

Featured on the cover of DJ Times Magazine and in numerous other media outlets, DJ Enferno takes time off from touring with Madonna to give a special performance at the Gansevoort South during WMC. As one of only five bandmembers on Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet World Tour," Enferno has played to over a million people worldwide on more than 60 international dates. Enferno is also a former U.S. DMC champ (turntablist) and an outstanding club DJ in his own right. This party takes place at the Plunge pool at the Gansevoort. Bring your speedo's and nighttime sunglasses you drug addled kids. Event details below:
Thursday, March 26, 2009 (WMC)

The powers that be over at SoBe Social Club in conjunction with Wire Magazine are giving us a new party at the old Rumi space. Move over Set, the Queens are coming 'atcha! Edison Farrow continues his reign as the South Beach boy du jour adding this much needed Friday party to the mix. I always say that Friday's are the best day to party and with a venue like 330 Lincoln Road coupled with Farrow's penchant for all thing fierce, trust me when I say it should not be missed. Funplex has three bars and several rooms to mix and mingle. Music by Queen on the Scene DJ Daisy D (fka Deadpetals) with Tiffany Fantasia holding court at the Door. And if all that isn't enough- no cover all night and free Ketel One Vodka from 10 to midnight. It all goes down Friday the 13th.
Tomorrow night the good people of Public Wizard bring you The Rub, straight outta Brooklyn. If you enjoy classics/hip-hop and are looking for an alternative to 14st redundancy then might we suggest you travel across the causeway to Blacksheep Bar (formerly Laundry Bar then 305 Music lounge, or something like that). These guys are hot shit in the NYC and are here for your entertainment, so don't miss out on a free evening by RSVP'ing here. Blacksheep Bar is located at 721 N Lincoln Ln
Miami Beach. Doors open at 9PM - Early arrival suggested. Spinning for the night will be The Rub's head men DJ Eleven & DJ Ayres. In addition DJs Witnes and Ash Rock will be in attendance.
For anyone who might have missed the bus to Studio A WMC 08 bass overdose with Sinden Drop The Lime and random Europeans or maybe the surprise spot at the Laundry Bar with a 1990's DNB/jungle set by Drop The Lime, you bet not pass up ((Shakes)) fresh double banger with Drop The Lime and DMC Chamion 3 yrs in a row, our local boy DJ Craze, coming at with for some serious perspectives on the proper way to shove a bass down your spine, not to miss X 1000!
From the release:
Take Note: NYC's Trouble&BASS Leader, Drop The Lime, is coming to Miami solely to lay down some Heavy BASS on your face. Paired up w/ MIAMI's Raining BASS King DJ CRAZE, DTL will blow your mind on the dance floor and leave you ears ringing. If you haven't seen his show you wont want to miss this opportunity. Live Singing, insane low end on the BASS, and dance floors jams to keep shit red hot. Dont miss it.
THE KING of MIAMI BASS Returns off tour w/ Kanye to link w/ Drop The Lime for an all out BASS explosion. Come see CRAZE rawk the decks as you know he can and see what happens when MIAMI & NYC BASS go head to head!!! Shit is going to get reallllll sexy. Main room of the Vagabond is the place to be Thursday Jan 29th.
The Vagabond can be found at:30 NE 14th St Miami, FL 33132.
Also on the same night, Thursday January 29,
on the Beach to the east the new Thursday night at the florida room, UNDER COVER. Hosted by Lolo of Sweat + Nick Scapa of Honor Roll Music. Figures as much when you put together the brains behind Miami's beloved purple & turquoise music palace with a Promising new, seemingly unstoppable Label/Full blown Music production studio, Honor Roll Music, you get a refreshingly UNIQUE take on class & contemporary 305 chillin. ANR is the house band to play covers all across the spectrum "From Madonna to MGMT and beyond..." along with guest dj's lined up for the coming weeks. Hell,
I don't Need to say more, just take a look at the venue:
"Designed by Lenny Kravitz's firm, the Delano's new subterranean speakeasy is the antithesis of its trendy parent hotel. The dimly lit den of chandeliers mixes old-school Florida decor with the aesthetic of a swanky cruise-ship lounge. Though it only has a capacity of 200, it attracts a diverse crowd: everyone from young hipsters and chic sophisticates to Golden Girls clones on a fancy night out. Rue McClanahan's feisty, randy Blanche would feel right at home atop the Lucite piano, channelling Michelle Pfeiffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys."
The Florida Room, in the Delano's Basement @ 1685 Collins Ave. at 17th St. Miami Beach.
Then for Friday January 30,
if your interested in an short circuited alternative to 14st, come celebrate Peasants With Feathers Birthday Party at Black Sheep (formerly Laundry Bar). Mr. Armando Sanfeathers is well known throughout city for his tireless efforts of laptop uprising as well as being a long time staple of the Otto Von Schirach live stage extravaganza. He's been organizing troops and dropping scatter bombs of electronica emphasized live events in the city for much to long to keep track of, while keeping the gabba kickdrum strong throughout.Come wish him a happy assed loving birthday with all of the tech-geeks and freaks coming out of the city as of late.
You can find yourself trashed at Black Sheep @ 721 n Lincoln Ln on the freekin beesh (1/2 block north of the Starbucks on Meridian & Lincoln)
Straight from the Feather's face:
Anyway, along with him are going to be playing some very well known dj's such as Wreck aka Salim Rafiq, Juan Basshead,George Young, and
Mr.Feathers' favorite dj Medley and more suprises! don't miss this its going to be the zoo of the future.
You can't say no to such a cute armpit, could you?
So you've made it this far, why haven't you left yet? Weekend is NOW.
The positive energies of the universe are crackling and radiant youthful sexual lightning is arcing off of all metal surfaces, like Tesla, as we leap into 2009. The heady smell of cocky boyish confidence fills the room. We are pleasured and punished by the reward and guilt of our many vices. I'm not as depressed as I once was: maybe things aren't as bad as we thought. Everyone is on, working, hustling and not even looking back at that rotten stinking shithole of a year. Let's have fun.
Friday:
Tony Rohr at White Room: PL0T presents Tony Rohr Live Along with Residents Mansur & Sabox at The White Room.

This should be a madhouse.
Victor Calderone at Space: I may be love/hate with house most of the time, but I like Calderone. He's hard and dirty, like.. well, he's hard and dirty. Before 2am: $30.00 / after 2am: $40.00
Osunlade at Voyage: Those wild animals at Aquabooty are back. Osunlade in the main room and Djinji Brown on the patio.
Sunday:
Steve Angello at Set: Yep, Swedish House Mafia again. I wonder if they have a place they rent here? South Beach House Mafia doesn't sound as cool. $20.00
Whats that I sense? Could it be the grumblings of the Versailles/Calle Ocho hard line clan readying the troops to mob little 'ole Espanola Way on Jan 23rd to protest the showing of the movie CHE by Steven Soderbergh? Well god damn I think it is. If there's any one thing I love about South Florida its the wild and outrageous, megaphone tossing Cuban hardliners. They are kinda like the Justice League, protecting America from super villains, only they protect us South Floridians from Castro spies and books about Cuba.
I digress. In a few weeks the Hardliners mortal but dead enemy, Ernest 'Che' Guevarra, will have a film about him screened at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. The small and humble "theater" will no doubt be deluged with withering old Cuban exiles excoriating the venue for practicing in free speech. Ever seen a mob of 80 year olds chase down younger more fit movie goers? If not then I must insist you be there for the show.
In other news the Miami New Times weighs in on all the CHE hoopla.
Tonight, January 7th, marks the debut night of Off The Radar at The Standard Hotel. Off The Radar will be hosted every Wednesday from 8 to 12 at The Standard Hotel. Fridays @ The Vagabond DJ's Ray Milian, Danny Ashe and Tom Wareham will be providing the tracks for this newly re-invigorated night which was on hiatus since being at LoveHate Bar. Jason Jimenez and the infamous Grace Jones will be hosting the inaugural event. Drinks will run you $5 beer, $6 wine + $8 liquor. The music format is straight from the blog www.offtheradarmusic.com, similar to what Ray spins in the Main Room Fridays at Vagabond but only in a less crowded, smokey, and sweaty atmosphere than the usual club environment.
Note from Lackner: I went to the preview party they had two weeks ago. Very cute, chill, and the beautiful Standard is a nice change from the usual haunts.
Every year Art Basel opens up with a free performance on Collins Ave between 21st and 23rd St on the beach for art goers. Last year Iggy and The Stooges brought out all the old timer punk rockers and young hipsters alike for a memorable evening and the year before that Peaches put on a good show. This year Duran over at Crossfade has the inside sources telling him that Yelle will be back in town to perform for all the yuppies (myself included). Check out Crossfade for more details.
Welcome to Miami Nights. We've been antagonizing and overanalyzing
the Miami and South Beach club scene since WMC 2006. Once we sober up we
also cover the arts, dining, real estate and shopping.
