Tomorrow: Ladytron w/ Datarock @ Studio A

Just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow is the Ladytron concert with Datarock at Studio A. For you retarded folks, Ladytron is an eletro-pop band from the UK that rose through the electroclash scene at the beginning of the decade. Luckily, the proved they were more that just a novelty, so after the genre died, they continued to enjoy plenty of success. Most of you know them through their singles "Playgirl," "Seventeen," and "Destroy Everything You Touch," all of which are dancefloor staples.

They just released a new album last week called Volicefero. The first single off the new album is "Ghosts," which is a little more rockin' then their past efforts but is still laced their classic synthy sounds. In case you haven't heard it, you can check the video for the single below:

Tickets should still be available via Ticketmaster or Studio A's Web site. And sorry kiddies, the show is 18+ only -- thank god. On a sad note, this will probably be the last event I attend at Studio A ever since it will more than likely close at the end of the month.

Wednesday Auditory Orgasm

In a country mostly known for its heavy metal, Norwegian band Datarock is far from metal as possible, stringing together pop hooks, glitchy beats and dance-rock sensibility to make songs that are instant dancefloor classics. If you went to Poplife and Revolver at their peaks you know them very well. If you didn't, well then now is your time to catch up.

I was able to catch them live during WMC in 2007 when they kicked off the Fixed/Ed Banger party at Studio A (they also appeared at the Spiderpussy party during that WMC as well with then little-known Chromeo). Unfortunately, they were stuck with a 11 p.m. slot, so it was basically me and barely 20 people. Still these guys had energy, and they didn't let the fact that they basically played to an empty house suck the life out of their performance. Well, the guys will get a second chance to show Miami what they are made of when they come into town with Ladytron Wednesday at Studio A. Don't be a fool and miss them. Yes, they are the openers, but trust me this is equal billing in my book.

I leave you with my favorite track off their debut album Datarock Datarock, "Computer Camp Love," because any song that samples Grease's "Summer Nights" is pretty fuckin' awesome.

Weekend Roundup, Aftermath Edition

This is part three of our Weekend Roundup recommendation column, copublished with our friends at PlumTV. Check out their site for all sorts of unMiamiNights content like fishing and opera.

Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
- Matthew, chapter 10, verse 8

It is time for renewal. It is time for rebirth. The great tumultuous crest, the poisoned tide, the grim pestilence of tourists that swept over Miami Beach during Memorial Day Weekend has receded. We are left cold and alone. Like Myanmar, but much worse, the healing process must now begin. For this weekend, I ordain you to go out among the ruins (Washington Ave), aide the poor and the sinful (door staff and bartenders, respectively), and bless them by sharing what little you may have. Remove thy D&G jockstrap and remain steadfast in fellowship with the others who cannot resist one last drink.

Verily, I present to you simple parties this week, where you will not lashed with reeds or scorned. Click below the fold to learn of this covenant.

Local Funk Friday

Nada Surf is the kind of band you'd listen to after breaking up with a significant other, finding out your credit score is in the gutter, or after just receiving a parking ticket. I highly suggest anyone who is in a similar situation to see them at Studio A on June 2 to know that no, you are not alone. Tickets are $15 through Ticketmaster and it's another one of those early all ages shows, but don't mind the children, they have feelings just like you.

The music video for their song "Always Love" is after the jump.

Also, I'm really excited about Worthy playing at The Vagabond tonight. The track I've included below is a song that was stuck in the back of my head for three months after hearing it in a set. Needless to say, when I found it I was quite the gleeful boy. The killer is the lead synth line that kicks in around the middle of the song. As a bonus after I've included the recently released video for "Work the Walls" which shows a typical pre-game session for you ladies after you put on your American Apparel fluorescent leggings and get ready for da club.

More Modeselektor news

Guest who just got added to the bill for the May 31 Modeselektor show at Studio A? Otto Von Schirach!! I know, you are asking, "Duran, Otto plays in Miami all the fucking time. What's so special about that?" Well bitches, Otto and Modeselektor do a sick as cover (and I'm my opinion, better) of Scooter's "Hyper, Hyper". If you don't think you've ever heard of the song before, that's probably 'cause you weren't X'd out during the '90s. Well, I'm crossing my fingers Otto jumps on stage with them to perform, but so far I know he'll be the opening act. If you curious as to what this gem of a song sounds like, I've included it below. Note the subtle corniness of the lyrics paired with a killer bass. Here's hoping Studio A brings out the top notch speakers for the show:

Also, the official afterparty will be at ze Poplife, naturally, with free admission all night with the wrist band from the show. The show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are still available for $15 at http://www.wanticket.com/futuremob or you can stop by Sweat Records (5505 NE 2nd Ave., Miami) and purchase a ticket and get a good espresso while you're at it too.

Studio A: The Catch 22

As some of you might know, I used to grace the presence of Studio A in Downtown as their leading lady (i.e office manager). After the April 14 shooting at the venue, general manager David Slifkin had no choice but to begin packing his bags and locking the doors for good. One month later rumors of what exactly is happening to the music venue are still circling the drain: Are they closing? When are they closing? What's going to happen to live music in the city of Miami?

Saturday, the answers called me, to once and for all clear the air. "Did you see a camera in the liquor closet the last time you were here?" Slifkin asks. "No," I replied. "And what's all this about you saying Ft. Lauderdale Clubs are nicer? I've always been nice."

We go on to discuss my earlier comment posted on Miami Nights and how hard he's been working these last few months to clear up the mess that faithful Sunday night brought upon the downtown community. It was hard enough trying to convince Slifkin's partners to keep Studio A open before the shooting, now it's barely worth the air. The club has changed drastically in the last month, what use to be a day-to-day struggle has become more of a routine, the club might be open but the soul has been long bleeding to death on the dance floor. For those of you who are nervously biting your nails wondering if your show will be canceled -- you can breath -- Studio A and David Slifkin have assured me and are allowing me to say on the record "No worries."

But the buck doesn't stop there.

Breaking: Studio A closed for good? Begin mourning (UPDATED)

We are receiving initial reports that Studio A has closed for good. This has been confirmed by staff. More details as they emerge. Watch this space!

UPDATE: The Miami New Times reports that Studio A will stay open at least through all of its already scheduled shows that run until the end of June (yes, this includes Ladytron). After that the future is a little more hazy, but I'm sure if the venue's luck changes the owners might consider keeping the place open. So if you want to see Studio A stay in it for the long haul you know what you need to do: actually stop by there, support shows and spend some money. Also a new stable weekly night probably wouldn't hurt Studio A's chances of staying open.

Bondê Do Role @ Studio A

They were amazing. Marina who? Laura Taylor and Ana Bernardino left no doubt in my mind that they are going to bring a lot of good things to the group. The crowd was a little thin last night, which was sort of disappointing because I expected a better turn out. Still, they gave it their all and everyone who was there enjoyed themselves. Anyway, I already wrote a review for the New Times, so I'm not about to write another one. Below is a small clip of the show I took with my camera for your enjoyment. And yes, the sample you hear is "Summer Nights".

Wednesday Auditory Orgasm

I guess this is both a WAO post and a reminder that Brazilian baile funk/hip-hop/rock/whatever group Bonde Do Role will be performing live at Studio A tomorrow. Actually it is the first U.S. appearance with their new lineup, so you have bragging rights after the show. Lead singer Maria Rabatski left the group with little warning, but no fear Rodrigo Gorky and Pedro D'Eyrot have found not one, but two replacements for Maria in Ana Benardino and Laura Taylor, who were selected as new members in an American Idol-inspired contest via MTV Brazil. I guess that's one way to find new members.

Anyway, until they record new music together I leave you with a oldie-but-goodie video for "Solta O Frango". And make sure to catch them tomorrow at Studio A along with local-band the Down Home Southernaires.

Breaking: Man shot dead @ Studio A

Unbelievable! Monday morning at around 3am a man is shot dead and another is wounded at Studio A during a Hip-Hop event. Of all the years I have been going to Studio A I have never felt un-safe or in any danger whatsoever. It's sad to hear that a place I frequent has had this tragedy happen. Naturally people are going to correlate the shooting with the crowd that was present, mainly the hip-hop genre. Do they have reason to make such a tie? In some respect yes, others no. Let's get things straight here on MN. This is a terrible tragedy that should never ever happen no matter what type of crowd is present. That it happened though begs for some insight.

I think it's pretty apparent that the rap genre is filled with incidents like this. The musical lyrics are inherently violent and the social caste it tailors to is pushed to violence for obvious reasons. The fact is someone is dead at a nightclub, a place where people go to have fun and escape from life's crappy deals. What also sucks is that this happened in a venue where I and many people I know have been having fun and escaping from life for years with no such incidents. The scary thing is that I could have been at Studio A when that happened. Selfish you say? Fuck right, I don't want a stray bullet in my persons ever. There are little details being provided by the police as of yet but the incident effectively just happened. People just don't shoot shit up at nightclubs for no reason. There must have been motive behind this incident and once we have more info we will be sure to tell you the deetz. As of now I am pretty perplexed that this happened at Studio A. If you were at the venue when this happened then leave us some comments to help clear up what happened.

Wednesday Night Recap

Okay, now I really don't know how I am awake. Last night obviously was Miami Nights' 2 Year Anniversary at Downtown Riot 2 at Studio A. Shit was off the proverbial chain. Annie Mac is gorgeous in person, pictures don't even do her justice. And she can fucking spin. Highlight was a remix of Boys Noize's "Oh". Still trying to figure out which remix it is though. But the star last night was undeniably Sinden. He did his signature hip-hop meets house and had the crowd eating out of his hand.

Around 4 a.m. I decided to go home and nap for an hour and return for the Dirtybird afterhours party also at Studio A. So I came back around 5:30 and the place was still fucking jumping. Really techno-y and dark, but very good. Finally called it quits around 6:45 and went home and proceeded to stay up drinking beer until 9 a.m. So yea, I'm suppose to go to the Scion event at the Raleigh today but I'm going to need some sunglasses to hide my cracked out eyes.

Update from Lackner: Thanks to everyone who came out! From what I recall, I had a great time. Tres bien!

Wednesday Auditory Orgasm - WMC Edition

Sinden is probably the next big thing to come out of the LDN -- London for you fools not in the know. His mixture of house beats and hip-hop grooves isn't exactly new, but damn him if his music isn't instantly addictive. Along with Switch, he is a resident DJ at Fabric, one of the city's hottest dance clubs. Make sure to check out the man when he stops by Miami during WMC next Wednesday for the Downtown Riot party -- and our 2 Year Anniversary party -- at Studio A.

Just so you absorb his amazing-ness, I leave you with his newest single "Beeper", which he produced with The Count -- also known as Herve -- featuring Kid Sister, who seems to be making 2008 the year she dominates the airwaves. And only Sinden could make the beeper sound so cool.

WMC Interview: Jesse Rose

While Berlin DJ Jesse Rose may not be a newcomer to Winter Music Conference, it seems that only recently American audiences have been paying attention to what this man can do. His sound is hard to classify but that what makes him such an interesting DJ. He breaks the genre barrier mixing in whatever is going to keep the party going. This year for WMC he breaks out of his routine to represent the Dubsided label at this year's Downtown Riot 2 party at Studio A. Rose had some time to answer a few questions from us about his sound, this year's WMC and his favorite records.

MN: How would you describe your sound?

JR: House music twisted up for 2008, influenced by lots of genres like grime, baile funk, hyphy, etc.

MN: What are some of the events you'll be doing sets at during WMC in Miami?

JR: URB party - Tuesday night @ Studio A
Dubsided party with Switch, Sinden, Annie Mac - Wednesday night @ Studio A
OM party - Thursday night @ Y Ultra Lounge

Wednesday Auditory Orgasm WMC Edition

Fuck it. Everyone has to know the London duo Simian Mobile Disco. Hmm? Prior they were in a group called Simian that did a little song called "Never Be Alone" that was sampled by a certain French duo and transformed into the monster dancefloor hit "We Are Your Friends".

Needless to say, if you have to be anywhere on Saturday night during Winter Music Conference, make sure you are at Studio A for the Fixed WMC Freakout to catch Simian Mobile Disco LIVE, not DJing, live. Below I leave you with their old-as-fuck-but-still-good single "Hustler" which was re-released last year after already begin released in 2006. The re-release brought a snazy new video featuring girls who can't seem to keep their food down. Not sure if that's a step up from the lesbian kissing in the original video. Well I leave you with both so you can decide.

Tonight: Nasties Female Wrestling @ Studio A

You know what we don't have enough of? Women wrestling in a pool of baby oil. It's a lost art if you ask me. In college I was luckily enough to witness a few keg parties that featured Jello-filled pools and barely clothed females clawing at each other. Well luckily Studio A tonight plans to revive the frat party tradition with Nasties Female Wrestling.

Hosted by Notorious Nastie, the event also features live music by Otto Von Schirach, Mad Martigan, Stoma and Crackwhore Sweethearts as well as DJ sets by Deuce Crew, Ladie Anime and Alan Ash.

I can't say I'm not intrigued and might stop by if only to soak in the absurdity of it all. Hopefully the ladies participating aren't used-and-abused meth addicts that roam around Downtown. Then again, meth-fueled fights are a sight to be seen.
