Radar Online is reporting that the unfortunate sideshow called Jersey Shore is having trouble getting into popular spots to film. This is an uncharacteristically tasteful move on the part of South Beach clubs: perhaps this show won't be the embarrassment to the city that I expected.
Update: Amazing work on Mansion's part! (via @unfalse)
Greetings and salutations Miami. It's Friday and if you're anything like me you are no doubt already lining up your plans for tonight. I'm sure by now most of you are fully recovered from the mayhem of two weeks ago. As such, please accept this as your cordial invitation to come an shake-a-lil' sumtin' with my friends and I at Vagabond tonight as we celebrate my birthday.
Vagabond in conjunction with Sweat Records are doing what they do best w/ Friday's at the Vagabond presenting Team Rojas DJ Set and OF MONTREAL after party. If you are living under rock and have yet to get to this party, WTF are you waiting for. The music is always killer and the people are great. I am especially looking forward to cutting it up with my girl Angi (MUAH!)
Resident DJs Ray Milian, Mike Deuce, LOLO, Ryan Evans, UVS, Chris Graham, and Gregg Foreman. Doors open at 10 w/ no cover before 11PM. $2 PBR and $5 Russian Standard Vodka before midnight will keep your whistle wet. The night is full of possibilities so throw on your most ironically effortless looking ensemble and come hang out w/ us! The Vagabond is located at 30 NE 14 Street.
Ecco is a spot that opened about six months ago to less fanfare than it deserved. Though it features an above-average pizza place and Italian restaurant downstairs and a cute, large lounge upstairs, there have been numerous parties here but none ever really stuck. This is a shame.
Tonight Bare Bones will try to change that. A new party put together by Norman V and Eddy Darko (the guys from Bandits), they've booked Jessica Who and Laura from WVUM to provide le music. Ladies drink free from 11-12 and there will be bottle specials. I really hope this takes off and invigorates this under appreciated spot.
Ecco Lounge is located at 168 SE 1st Street in downtown Miami.
Drop The Lime, Classixx, Skeet Skeet at Bar (28 NE 14th St) from 3pm until late. More information. Pase Rock will also be there later: see here.
During the day.. and going late into the night:
Flying Circus at Nikki Beach (1 Ocean Drive), with the most ridiculous lineup in the history of lineups: Steve Lawler, Audiofly, Timo Maas, Tiefschwarz, Davide Squillace, Heidi, Matt Tolfrey.. I could go on and on but I type with one finger. More information.
You know that feeling grandma got in her arthritic rusty bones when she says a storm's-a-comin' and you're like "shut up and mend my shoes you hag" and then, whadya know, five minutes later thunder cracks and lightning arcs across the sky, angry and full of energy? WMC's a comin' and Grandma Lackner is gettin the aches.
Pretend that paragraph made sense.
Tonight I command you to go to White Room at 1306 N Miami Ave for the pre-opening WMC showcase presented by Subdrive and our friends at Cornbread Productions, featuring Alexander Technique, Cobra Krames, Terror Dactel and Mike Mago. More information here.
Afterward check out Bar around the corner at 28 NE 14th Street. They're unveiling their newly redone look by artists Todd James aka Reas. Disturbingly cheap drinks and a very pleasant atmosphere.
A new party is starting tonight in the downtown Performing Arts District. Sadly, this isn't a very common occurrence these days so take note.
The Rub Out at White Room, which describes itself as an indie dance party, was created to bring back the fun days of five years ago when the music you heard in the hipster clubs leaned more toward indie rock rather than electronic dance music and open format as it does now. DJs Eddy Darko and the Haitian Hillbilly will be playing along with live act King Bee. $6 PBR + shot specials will be offered, intended to get people rolling around on the ground moaning and whimpering.
God fucking damn it. The Jersey Shore sideshow act is officially coming to Miami in the coming weeks as has been extensively rumored. I've heard they will be confined to the Clevelander (most likely as a way for MTV to have another channel of revenue from running the freak show) but even that isn't assuaging my fears about how they will leak like fetid toxic discharge into places I want to go. It's sad and revolting that MTV has completely succumbed to the lures of least common denominator television programming - even if they attempt to be self-aware about the whole situation.
South Beach's favorite little dive bar -- well, one of them at least -- is apparently headed toward closure. Yelp members report that the building has been sold and they are closing their doors. I'm not a big dive bar fan (I prefer to get raped by gangs of trannies in alleys rather than filthy bathrooms, because I feel like the cool night breeze helps air out my wounds) but there was something peculiarly charming about this place. Perhaps it was the balls of a place that can be uppity about $9-a-glass imported beer while simultaneously serving only White Castle burgers and peanuts on their food menu.
In any case, this is another symptom of Miami Beach's slow descent into safe commercial boredom. I know it's already a lost cause for much of the beach but it's still pretty sad to see. We'll miss you, Abbey.
Sidenote: I couldn't find a good photo of this place despite the hordes of camera-equipped tourists that prowl this area, and the domain name for their website has long since expired. Dive bar status to the end!
[Editor's note: Welcome JonJon, our new resident house music fan! Someone's gotta do it.. -lackner]
March is finally here and we all know what that means, "Miami Season" has officialy begun. Here is when all the fun really begins. Not that it really ever stops but, you all know what I mean. Between the beach being packed with a very diverse crowd (which lets say 75% consisting of drunk college white girls) from every corner of the US every weekend, to Nikki Beach becoming every ones routine subsituting Sunday school, the weather finally warming up, and lets not forget the very exciting Winter Music Conference blessing this city during the last week of the month. Everything really just begins to feel right about this time of the year. This is time of year when we actually start to take those 34 Event Invitations waiting on our Facebooks seriously. So lets get the sunblock ready, stock up on our bathing suits, and hit the gym hard to bulk up our birthday suits because we've all got some interesting day and nights ahead of us!
I'm gonna make this short. I was not blessed with the ablity to rant like Lackner nor the ability to coerce under age girls so here are your Saturday night WMC suggestions:
Get Physical Miami @ Studio K (formerly Studio A) featuring: M.A.N.D.Y vs Booka Shade, Matthew Dear, AudioFly, Italoboyz and more. In our my opinion the best ongoing party during WMC for the past few years. Don't believe me? See last years Get Physical Miami for yourself.
Fool's Gold @ The White Room featuring: A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, DJ Mehdi, LA Riots and many more. It's FREE. Do yourself a favor and listen to us.
Sasha @ Shine in the Shelborne Hotel. I know generally we don't endorse trance but Sasha is a legend. Just do it if you are afraid of the homeless in Downtown Miami.
Have fun and be safe! And remember, just cause a panhandler is literate doesn't mean they aren't out to get ya....Ha just kidding, Miami is truly safer Sarajevo. Really.....
Our readers know we lean towards Electro on this blog so it's fitting Mansion has arguably the best electro lineup tonight for WMC. The lineup is pretty sick with Benny Benassi, Calvin Harris (dj set), The Bloody Beetroots, Sneaky Sound System LIVE, Joachim Garraud, LA Riots and Don Rimini spinning the dirtiest electro this side of the Miami River. Tickets for this event are $30 and can be purchased here. Arrive early as the line for Mansion for these events is usually 200 deep. If I am not mistaken it is also the album launch party for The Bloody Beetroots, so expect to hear a lot of new ass shaking, spleen shattering grittiness.
RokBar is a personal favorite for both Lackner and myself. With many drunken and sweaty nights courtesy of RokBar we gladly bring you their WMC events. For all you visitors from outside South Florida RokBar is South Beach's premier Rock like club. Filled with a slew of crowds, from your typical SoBe douche to your typical Downtown Miami douche, you get the best of all Miami worlds. RokBar also underwent some remodeling a few months ago adding some much needed decor.
Anyhow take it from us at Miami Nights, RokBar is a great place to party. Below are the Rokbar Events. Thursday and Saturday Night look SICK! A-Trak, Craze and Klever on Thursday then Cut Copy, the Presets and Tommie Sunshine on Saturday is just gonna make for some ridiculous partying. All events are $20 at the door before Midnight. After midnight ticket prices will be go up depending on capacity. Also on Saturday and Sunday Rokbar will be open till 7am.
Steve Aoki has been a staple club DJ since the revolver days and continues to frequent Miami to spin at many SoBe clubs. This year the trust fund baby is bringing along his Dim Mak label and hordes of Djs to The Fontainebleau resort for two killer events. On Thursday, March 26th, Dim Mak will be at Blade restaurant with:
The Bloody Beetroots
Steve Aoki
Armand Van Helden
Stretch Armstrong
Felix Cartal
etc..etc...
On Friday night, March 27th, same venue but with a different lineup Aoki will be spinning alongside some far larger more nationally known DJs like:
DJ AM
Jazzy Jeff
Discotech
The Fontainebleau is located at 4441 Collins Avenue. If you are attending any of these events arrive early as there is always a wait for these larger events no matter if you have a ticket already or not. Click on fliers for a big readable image.
Featured on the cover of DJ Times Magazine and in numerous other media outlets, DJ Enferno takes time off from touring with Madonna to give a special performance at the Gansevoort South during WMC. As one of only five bandmembers on Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet World Tour," Enferno has played to over a million people worldwide on more than 60 international dates. Enferno is also a former U.S. DMC champ (turntablist) and an outstanding club DJ in his own right. This party takes place at the Plunge pool at the Gansevoort. Bring your speedo's and nighttime sunglasses you drug addled kids. Event details below:
Thursday, March 26, 2009 (WMC)
11pm - 2am (Please arrive by 10pm)
DJ Times Presents DJ Enferno.
Gansevoort South, Plunge Pool
2377 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139
Ah yes, "conveniently" Miami Nights anniversary party falls on the same week as WMC and as such we find someone crazy enough to throw a party with us to celebrate. This year the good people of Contagious Musiq have agreed to look past Lackner's penchant for underage young women to work with us on throwing what will be one of WMC's most promising party's. If you have never been to a MN anniversary then you have no clue what you are missing.
The past few years were a hot mess filled with stickers on body parts, fellow MN cohorts stumbling uncontrollably and throwing champagne glasses, great DJs and incredible atmosphere. If you don't believe then refer to MN Anniversary gallery here, here and here. If those galleries aren't enough to convince you how lascivious our anniversary is then I don't know what will. This year Miami Nights will celebrate it's 3 year anniversary at SoHo Studios with musical libations of:
Room 1
Chromeo dj set
Kid Sister (WMC exclusive)
Diplo
Amanda Blank (WMC exclusive)
Ludachrist (wmc exclusive)
Stretch Armstrong
Junior Sanchez
Afrobeta
Hydroz
Pusher FM + Sean Weeks
Room 2
Wale
Kidz in the Hall
Pac Div
J*Davey
Killa Kela
Hollywood Holt
Million $ Mano
Mickey Factz
U-N-I
Roxy Cottontail
Eli Escobar
Mayday
Hey Champ
Artofficial
Lex One
What makes a great party is not only the top acts (Diplo, Chromeo and Kid Sister) but also the fact that this line up includes some home grown talent. Mayday, Artofficial and Afrobeta are all well known local acts that promise to put on a great spin to this already great line up. It wouldn't be a proper anniversary either if we weren't giving away free tickets to the event. In the coming days you will be able to sign up to win free tickets to the event. If you don't win you can still buy ticket here. Stay tuned to Miami Nights for more details. SoHo Studios is located at 2136 NW 1st Ave in Wynwood.
I just heard about this in the morning and got confirmation from the Herald site that there was indeed an drive by shooting early Monday morning. The reports mention an argument that took place outside the club at 4am Monday morning with one of the arguers leaving. A few moments later a car drove by and opened fire on the crowd outside. If you got any deetz call crime stoppers. Save Downtown!~
A group of men who had been inside the club began arguing outside the building about 4 a.m., said Kenia Alfonso, a Miami police spokeswoman. The men left.
Minutes later, a car drove by and someone in the car opened fire on the crowd. A club bouncer was among the injured. It is not known if he was the intended target. Police do not have a description of the vehicle or the shooter.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
Typical broski interview here:
Another witness described what occurred inside the venue. "The dude had bumped the dude, about a drink and then the dude, he said, 'Oh, you don't know me.' He had all type of guns outside," said the witness.
Well well well, it seems we are fucked after all. The unemployment rate has reached 7.6%. In other words, 8 out of every 100 people you know is out of work. Unfortunately for me, 90 out of every 100 people I know is out of work, because I hang out with these crusty hopeless indie retards who have nothing going for them. Until I find a way to ship them all off to an isolated island, perhaps with rumors of a Dov Charney sighting, my ratio is fucked.
If you're ready to econoparty this weekend on the cheap, I have some seductive choices for you. This is a really strong weekend to be in Miami.
Friday:
Sammy Dee at Glass: Ah, yes, I've always wanted to hear slamming minimal techno while surrounded by antique wood paneling, but I thought the only way to make that happen was a Bavarian orgy with the strict school headmaster and his perverse, delinquent son. I guess fantasies really do come true. This comically low quality YouTube clip will show you what Sammy Dee is about:
Sammy Dee is from Berlin and on the Poker Flat label. And tickets are $10. And I'll be there. What more can you ask for? Other than me not being there. Glass is located at 432 41st Street, Miami Beach.
Thug Sinatra at Provocateur: I've been meaning to write a post about Provocateur, but I haven't been there, and neither have most of the other people I've asked, but this is an interesting reason to go: the ever-surprising John Hood is doing something he calls "Thug Sinatra", in which he croons along with a piano player to some hip hop songs. Sounds weird right? I'm curious about it. Click here for more information. Provocateur is located down the block from Aerobar/Mokai, in the old Groovejet space.
Saturday:
Dubfire at Mansion: What more needs to be said? Dubfire is the darker, housier, technoey side of Deep Dish. When the boys decide to acknowledge that progressive house is absolutely the shittiest thing on earth, Dubfire comes out. Then amnesia sets in and things go back to normal. Should be an amazing show. Even more amazing? It's free if you go with Sean Ford. That's ridiculous. Mansion is located at.. you know where Mansion is.
Tomorrow night the good people of Public Wizard bring you The Rub, straight outta Brooklyn. If you enjoy classics/hip-hop and are looking for an alternative to 14st redundancy then might we suggest you travel across the causeway to Blacksheep Bar (formerly Laundry Bar then 305 Music lounge, or something like that). These guys are hot shit in the NYC and are here for your entertainment, so don't miss out on a free evening by RSVP'ing here. Blacksheep Bar is located at 721 N Lincoln Ln
Miami Beach. Doors open at 9PM - Early arrival suggested. Spinning for the night will be The Rub's head men DJ Eleven & DJ Ayres. In addition DJs Witnes and Ash Rock will be in attendance.
For anyone who might have missed the bus to Studio A WMC 08 bass overdose with Sinden Drop The Lime and random Europeans or maybe the surprise spot at the Laundry Bar with a 1990's DNB/jungle set by Drop The Lime, you bet not pass up ((Shakes)) fresh double banger with Drop The Lime and DMC Chamion 3 yrs in a row, our local boy DJ Craze, coming at with for some serious perspectives on the proper way to shove a bass down your spine, not to miss X 1000!
From the release:
Take Note: NYC's Trouble&BASS Leader, Drop The Lime, is coming to Miami solely to lay down some Heavy BASS on your face. Paired up w/ MIAMI's Raining BASS King DJ CRAZE, DTL will blow your mind on the dance floor and leave you ears ringing. If you haven't seen his show you wont want to miss this opportunity. Live Singing, insane low end on the BASS, and dance floors jams to keep shit red hot. Dont miss it.
THE KING of MIAMI BASS Returns off tour w/ Kanye to link w/ Drop The Lime for an all out BASS explosion. Come see CRAZE rawk the decks as you know he can and see what happens when MIAMI & NYC BASS go head to head!!! Shit is going to get reallllll sexy. Main room of the Vagabond is the place to be Thursday Jan 29th.
The Vagabond can be found at:30 NE 14th St Miami, FL 33132.
Also on the same night, Thursday January 29,
on the Beach to the east the new Thursday night at the florida room, UNDER COVER. Hosted by Lolo of Sweat + Nick Scapa of Honor Roll Music. Figures as much when you put together the brains behind Miami's beloved purple & turquoise music palace with a Promising new, seemingly unstoppable Label/Full blown Music production studio, Honor Roll Music, you get a refreshingly UNIQUE take on class & contemporary 305 chillin. ANR is the house band to play covers all across the spectrum "From Madonna to MGMT and beyond..." along with guest dj's lined up for the coming weeks. Hell,
I don't Need to say more, just take a look at the venue:
"Designed by Lenny Kravitz's firm, the Delano's new subterranean speakeasy is the antithesis of its trendy parent hotel. The dimly lit den of chandeliers mixes old-school Florida decor with the aesthetic of a swanky cruise-ship lounge. Though it only has a capacity of 200, it attracts a diverse crowd: everyone from young hipsters and chic sophisticates to Golden Girls clones on a fancy night out. Rue McClanahan's feisty, randy Blanche would feel right at home atop the Lucite piano, channelling Michelle Pfeiffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys."
The Florida Room, in the Delano's Basement @ 1685 Collins Ave. at 17th St. Miami Beach.
Then for Friday January 30,
if your interested in an short circuited alternative to 14st, come celebrate Peasants With Feathers Birthday Party at Black Sheep (formerly Laundry Bar). Mr. Armando Sanfeathers is well known throughout city for his tireless efforts of laptop uprising as well as being a long time staple of the Otto Von Schirach live stage extravaganza. He's been organizing troops and dropping scatter bombs of electronica emphasized live events in the city for much to long to keep track of, while keeping the gabba kickdrum strong throughout.Come wish him a happy assed loving birthday with all of the tech-geeks and freaks coming out of the city as of late.
You can find yourself trashed at Black Sheep @ 721 n Lincoln Ln on the freekin beesh (1/2 block north of the Starbucks on Meridian & Lincoln)
Straight from the Feather's face:
Anyway, along with him are going to be playing some very well known dj's such as Wreck aka Salim Rafiq, Juan Basshead,George Young, and
Mr.Feathers' favorite dj Medley and more suprises! don't miss this its going to be the zoo of the future.
You can't say no to such a cute armpit, could you?
So you've made it this far, why haven't you left yet? Weekend is NOW.
The term "Ultra Lounge" in Miami is like having the last name Perez. It's ubiquitous on the South Beach party circuit, and to be quite honest doesn't raise any interest in my opinion. If your the Ultra Lounge type however and don't mind the term then Louis should be added to your party destinations. Beautiful women abound, good looking men in abundance and decor to make you feel like a Victorian nobel your bound to enjoy the decadence of this venue.
The venue is inside the Gansevoort hotel a short walk from the entrance. It should be easy to spot, considering there is a large white horse drawn carriage at the entrance. The layout of the venue is a little odd upon entering. Initially you are greeted with a bar, good start, with oversized couches and chairs. If you can see well in the dark you will notice a hall that leads to the back of the club. This separates the entrance from the dance floor where most of the action takes place. The decor is largely oversized paraphernalia such as portraits of French royalty, lamps and chandeliers. This is something I can appreciate, old world like regalia as opposed to more modern looking Ultra Lounges.
The Dj booth is surrounded by what looks like a giant lotus, though I wouldn't trust my low light vision on this, with the bar adjacent to it. The only weird aspect of the dance floor area is the hulking column in the middle of the room which essentially segregates the sides of the floor. This is a complete eyesore. Why would you have something separating the room? Aside from that this is your not so typical Ultra Lounge on the beach. The decorations attest to that statement. Dress to impress as your likely to run into trouble if you don't have the standard jeans, button up shirt, black shoes attire typical of all south beach denizens. You might wanna polish of those line too considering the quality of women and men at the club, I'm sure they have heard every iteration of "Are you tire? Cause you been running in my dreams all night". Above all have fun and be a part of the haute lifestyle that is Miami.
Whats your take on Louis? We would love to hear your opinion in the comments.
Welcome to Miami Nights. We've been antagonizing and overanalyzing
the Miami and South Beach club scene since WMC 2006. Once we sober up we
also cover the arts, dining, real estate and shopping.
