Summerfest 2010

All around this great nation of ours different cities have big summer events that draw large groups of people to gather and celebrate any number of things- many of which are known as "Summerfest", including a rather large and well known live music festival in Milwaukee, WI.

This is nothing like that.

For the third year in a row Summerfest 2010 is taking over South Beach.  The folks behind Miami's Winter Party in conjunction with Pink Dollar Enterprises are coming together to put on this fabulously fun event to beneifit the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Now you know how the gays do mija... 5 events in three days.

The kick-off event (Friday night 7-10 pm) doubles as a shopping event at Creative Male in at the Shops at Midtown.  Let me break this down for you: complementary cocktails + (male) hotties showing off swimwear and underwear. Mmmhmmm... exactly.

Bueno pues, it's Saturday and you have your tanga all good to go.  Follow the beats to the marquis events of the weekend- "The Summerfest Pool Party" at The Hotel Victor. Oyeme when I tell you that this is one sopa de maricon that you do not want to miss. If last year's event is any indication of what to expect, then I'm going to be the first loca in line.

Longtime friend and South Beach fixture DJ FR8O will be spinning along with DJ Charlmix.  Admission gets you two drink tickets. VIP's get access to a private poolside VIP lounge area and bar, gift bags, and the official Summerfest ’10 CD, compliments of DJ Charlmix. The party goes from 1- 6PM. VIP Admission: $35 in advance/$45 at the door; General Admission: $25 in advance/$30 at the door.

The party keeps going later that night at Score for "Summer Storm" with DJ's Miik and Eddie Alias (NYC). Admission: $10 in advance/$15 at the door. Things wrap up on Sunday at the gay mecca known as The Palace.

Miami not the gayest place on Earth

Someone got paid big bucks to figure out which are the gayest cities in America. Surprisingly, and some what disappointingly, Miami is way down at #20. I suppose this researcher isn't factoring popper-related frenzies or sales of leather chaps into his equations because I can't even walk down Lincoln Road in a D2 crop top and my embroidered "Fuck Moi" denim shorts without getting eye-sodomized by muscular pigbois every ten feet.

Local Artist: Frank Ciliberti Show Tonight

One of my favorite aspects about the off-season in Miami is all the great "locals" driven events that pop up.  Every so often an opportunity comes together luring nightlife, art, retail, cocktails; all under the guise of a good cause.  I like to consider this the perfect storm of eventing.  Tonight, Deisgn Within Reach is hosting "Evolution Through Emotion" a showcase of local artist (and one of my personal favorite nightlife personalities) Frank Cilibreti who uses acrylic on canvas and a unique resin technique creating a glass-like surrealistic/ abstract works of art.  Frank's alluring pieces will be on display and available for purchase with a percentage of the proceeds to be donated to Care Resource.  "Evolution thorugh Emotion" (sponsored by Twist and Grey Goose) runs tonight, May 20, 2010 from 7PM- 10PM at Deisgn Within Reach on Lincoln Road (927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139) with the after-party (and silent auction) at Twist.

WMC 2010: Lady Lovin'

The girls at Pandora Events aren't going to be left out of the WMC fun.  It's been a while since I hit up Sweet @ Mova (F.K.A. Halo), but if I know anything about these girls, it's that they know how to have a good time.  With an all female lineup I can only hope that they didn't sacrifice talent for kitsch.  Fear not people, this party is not chick strict.

"Girls on the Decks" goes down tonight, Thursday March 25 at Mova.  No cover and some tempting drink specials ($8.00 Belvedere) could pull in a good crowd.  Mova is located just off Lincoln Rd at 1625 Michigan Avenue, South Beach.

WMC 2010: Fairy Dust Edition

So i have been racking my head trying to figure out WTF to do this WMC.  I've opted out of Ultra and I'm def. skipping the pool (read: human genome soup at $50 bucks a pop) parties.  I'm trying to not to let my jadedness get the best of me and telling myself: "come on bitch, pull it together!"  I just haven't been able to shake the whole "OVER IT" feeling.  When I think about all the time, effort (not to mention $$$) spent over something as fickle as partying I can't help but get the same feeling of disdain and hopelessness like when I eat carbs.

I was just about to dive head first into a bag of chips when I had an epiphany-> instead of going nusto-facto running around downtown, dodging the hipsterrati, why not figure out a way to carve out your own fun time. In that spirit I've decided to forsake (most) of the typical and kick it with an old friend of mine DJ Fr8-O.  He'll be showcasing his skillz at The Palace South Beach.  Fresh off their win against the big bully next door, the Palace is already well known for their Sunday Drag Brunch.  On the corner of 12th Street and Ocean Drive it makes for a ideal location for a great crowd and music.  Come watch the sunset, have some pre-game drinks, and kick up some sand. DJ-Fr8-0 will be taking the deck on Saturday March 27 from 6PM-9PM.  The Palace is located at 1200 Ocean Drive, South Beach.  Did I mention its free?  Yeah.

Now if you can't foresee yourself draggin' your ass out out before the sun goes down, and you still want to step-ball-change with the boys may I suggest tracking down Maximus 3000.  In a special WMC event DJ Maximus 3000 VS Josh Riptide will perform a tag team set at the "One Nation Under Groove" after party at Twist on Thursday March 25.  There is never a cover at Twist and be sure to say hi to Frank at the downstairs bar.

La Vie Bohemio in Coral Gables

Someone sound the alarm and break out the Valtrex. Like a pesky case of herpes, we're back. Since the last time I came on here to spout off about all the fun goings-ons around town I feel bemused to say that not much has really changed. I am cloaked with a been there/done that attitude about nightlife. This is not to say that I haven't been able to enjoy it (big ups to my peeps at the vodka distillery and the old faithfuls of 14th street) I just have been feeling like everything is just a rehashing of what has already been done.

So you can imagine my surprise when I was told about a gay fter-hours in (shocker of all shockers) Shenandoah.  Nuzzled between a Chiropractor's office and an Italian restaurant on Coral Way is Cafe Bohemio. The patio out front is seemingly nondescript.  It isn't until you walk that you get the full effect of this place.  Note: this is not the place to go to listen to awesome new music, or to see and be seen, or any of that other contrived bullshit that seems to dominate the nightlife scene. This place is about keeping the party going.

I got the notion that like the frat guys I used to "tutor" back in college, it's on the "DL". There are no promoters, no flyers, no ad's whatsoever. It's all word of mouth. The music is straight off of El Sol 95 and the crowd is random melange of trannies taking there wig off after work, green card toting patrons, and random people just having a good as fuck time. Boys who like boys who like girls dressed up as boys dressed up as drag queens who like rich men who like hookers who like gang bangers who like hipster girls who like boys that look like girls who like lesbians that eat pastelitos all come together at this little gem of a watering hole.

Bohemio Club Miami is located at 2845 SW Coral Way in Miami

Are you there Miami Nights? It's me your faithful reader.

No need to break out the defibrillators folks.  We here at Miami Nights have not died.  No we did not get trapped inn the rubble of the Pawn Shop demolition.  No we did not get abducted by aliens, or move to New York.  We have merely been figuring out how to unearth Lackner from his hole.  You see with the end of days upon us (as evident by the water and ice bombs that almighty god has unleashed on us over the last month) Lackner has gone all retro Y2K and started preparing for the apocalypse hording canned food, saving anything flammable for potential kindling, and (don’t tell I told you) but his bathroom has been transformed into a dungeon of sorts where poor unsuspecting Davie girls are fed Quaaludes and taco bell while the Wizard of Oz plays on repeat.  Well fear not faithful readers, we have not forsaken you.  Equipped with my fan and fabulous secret powers I, like gay Moses, shall guide the flock through the desert of nightlife crap (does anyone even go to Set anymore?) and into Shangri La (the door is behind the stage at PS 14 in case you missed the memo).

Funplex Fridays Grand Opening

The powers that be over at SoBe Social Club in conjunction with Wire Magazine are giving us a new party at the old Rumi space.  Move over Set, the Queens are coming 'atcha!  Edison Farrow continues his reign as the South Beach boy du jour adding this much needed Friday party to the mix.  I always say that Friday's are the best day to party and with a venue like 330 Lincoln Road coupled with Farrow's penchant for all thing fierce, trust me when I say it should not be missed.  Funplex has three bars and several rooms to mix and mingle.  Music by Queen on the Scene DJ Daisy D (fka Deadpetals) with Tiffany Fantasia holding court at the Door.    And if all that isn't enough- no cover all night and free Ketel One Vodka from 10 to midnight.  It all goes down Friday the 13th.

Another reason why gay bars are more fun than str8 bars

Not so long ago, in the days of Salvation and Amnesia, Shelley Novak reigned on high with her 5 o'clock shadow, Midler-esque hair, and fashion backwards taste. Whether it was comps at the door, or drink tickets inside, she always (ALWAYS) made sure my friends and I had a great time. Who could forget the days of Shelly on the short lived WAMI channel's "Kenneth's Frequency"? Well ladies and gents, if you haven't been back on the beach in sometime, allow me to say that Shelley Novak is back and in full effect. Fresh off hosting the closing party at Laundry Bar (another sign that all good things eventually come to an end on South Beach) Miss Novak and one of my fav hangouts on Lincoln Rd, Halo, are coming together for "Betty Ford Bingo" every Wednesday night (did I mention it's half-price drinks?) Oh yeah. So break out fuchsia ink stamp, pull up a chair, and get ready to have fun! Halo is located at 1625 Michigan Avenue.

Gay Bowling League (insert quip about homos, fingers, holes, and balls here)

Jamie Beckett of Edgemiami.com did a great write up about the new Miami Beach Gay Bowling League.
Read on…

Over the past few years, Miami has built a reputation as a place that is gay-friendly and full of action. From clubs to restaurants and festivals, there is plenty out there celebrating the Gay and Lesbian community, including being the location of the annual White Party.

I didn't get to Score but there's always a Twist

So, being that I have a gay best friend it was complete obligation for me to go out to the Miami Beach gay clubs. My adventure was interesting to say the least.

We started off at Score on Lincoln Road and I was shocked to see that Lincoln Road for the most part was dead. Now this was a Saturday night at about 2am. Maybe that's normal for the strip but I certainly didn't expect it to be that way. Anyways, we made our way in after paying an $8.00 cover and the club was divided in two. It had mainly gay guys dancing to house-like techno on the first floor and a "ladies night" on the second floor. Since my friends and I were celebrating my male gay friends birthday we stayed on the first floor and tried to make the best of the situation. But, unfortunately A) there were hardly any people dancing and B) The music was definitely not what I like to get down to. So, we quickly realized that we needed to hit up a new destination.

Fay is Homophobic

WE INTERUPPT OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED BLOGGING TO BRING THE LATEST FIELD REPORT FROM FEROSH VERNACULAR WHO IS RISKING LIFE AND A GOOD HAIR DAY TO BRING YOU THIS BREAKING YET USELESS REPORT.

This is Ferosh Vernacular reporting live just outside the Miami-Dade County Consumer Services Department (140 West Flagler Street) where what was supposed to be a historic day for everyone has turned into a tragic tale of voodoo and homophobia.  As I reported on Friday, today at 10:00 just inside this building on the 9th floor, the very first County recognized registry for domestic partners was to have taken place.  The rejoicing has been put on hold with the likes of Tropical Storm Fay setting her sights on us.  After some make believe investigative reporting I have been able to unearth a fictional memo penned by the powers that be at the Christian Coalition in association with Fidel Castro and Satan.  Apparently this Triumvirate of Evil (TOE-yes, that is what they are calling themselves) has managed to exhume the fabled CrystalMeth Skull from the Lost City of Crakiopea.  Using the skull's mystical powers, TOE has managed to open the Hell Mouth where the tortured soul of an unfortunate Plantations Daughter (Fay), who was attacked with a nasty perm by a crazed "flamboyant" hairdresser prior to meeting her gentleman caller and thus had to endure bad frizzy hair and never had a date again all while her plantation was burned by the North, has been unleashed on the World to take her revenge on all the homosexuals.

In lieu of this new report the gays-n-friends have said fuck it let's party (it is Miami after all).

Famed Party Boy Andrews Lorenzana and Co. are doing it up as only they can for "The Offical Fay Hurricane Party" @ eXposure tonight.  You get a free shot if you show up in your bathing suit (and a lot more no doubt if you take it off).  See you tonight!

Where the boys are

Ladies and Gentlemen it seems that while I have been traipsing through the streets of Park West, Brickell, and Midtown, the boys (and girls) of South Beach have been throwing down some interesting parties that you may now be aware of and should definitely not go overlooked, especially since everyone knows that the gays throw the best parties!

As I have previously mentioned, Edison Farrow's South Beach Social Club basically redefined gay nightlife since the onslaught of his now famous Traveling Tuesday Martini Party (I mean, even Ewan McGreggor and Jim Carrey know that's where the Gay Elite Meet and Greet).  Farrow's "Simple Life" at Buck 15 on Thursday continues to draw the longest waits I have seen at any establishment on the Beach since the glory days. His Happy Hour at Halo is where I'll be this Friday which I can't wait to check out.  But, I am most excited about his latest soiree over at one of my favorite stomping grounds, Circa 28, for "Sugar Daddy Sundays.

Speaking of fun Sunday parties, Sunday T at the Palace Bar continues it's long stand of where to enjoy a refreshing highball of tea (staten island, long island, or long beach- your choice), and everyone know what's up, down, and around over at Twist- which it must be said that in the ever fickle world of clubland, Twist has managed to secure the title of the longest running gay club in Miami.  Other fun spots to check out are "Hot Mess" at B.E.D. on Thursdays and "Click" at Dek23 on Sundays each of which have given the boys, girls (and everyone in between) something fun!!!

Let's Hear it for SoBe Fest!

So while most readers on here may be traipsing the streets of Miami, I would like to call to your attention a fabulous event (which good friend DJ FR8-0 let me know about) going down over the bridge on South Beach that not only secures you free drinks at 4 parties, also gets you into some of the most gorgeous venues, hob-nob with some major player AND (to top it off) support a great local charity.

The people behind the Miami Beach Gay Bar Crawl are presenting the first annual SoBe Fest with 100% of the proceeds benefiting SOBAP

For our breeder readers allow me to explain.  Every summer since the dawn of gay, major cities around the country have been showing their pride, and South Beach is no longer going to be out of the mix.  Here's the deal, weekend passes are on sale for $75.00 in advance and includes free Absolut cocktails*, Sunday Brunch, as well as free entrance and access to each and every event as well as the after parties.  If you you're like me and can't make every single event, I have been informed that individual party tickets will be made available upon request, but come on, at $75.00 for nine events- four of which have comp Absolut Vodka, as well as the fact that it is a charity event- IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT!

So here is all the what, when and where for all of the great parties this weekend.

Aqua Girl '08: Follow The Yellow Dyke Road

I know our homosexual readers missed me to pieces so I figured I would come out of hiding for a bit to show some love and give an update on a couple of events happenin' this weekend where you can shake your booty alongside yours truly.

It's that time again gals (and the men who follow them), Aqua Girl™ has officially begun its course of lesbionic debauchery on South Bitch. Now, here is your history lesson:

Aqua Girl™ traces its beginnings to the year 1999. That year, Alison Burgos and NYC’s legendary women’s producers, Shescape, gathered a committee of women from around South Florida to produce an exciting one-night event to benefit breast cancer. The event, Sweet Charity, was an extraordinary dance event bringing together over 800 women and raising over $15,000 for two local breast cancer organizations, Cancer Link and Gilda’s Club. In 2000, Sweet Charity grew into an entire weekend of events and Aqua Girl™ was born. The goal was to create a dynamic national fundraising weekend celebrating women and the issues that effect them. With over 2,500 women in attendance from all over the world, the first year of this spectacular weekend of events was a huge success. Now in its seventh fabulous year, Aqua Girl™ continues to attract women from all corners of the country, the Americas and around the globe. The weekend continues to grow with an ever-expanding variety of events that enhances its appeal and attendance,... and it keeps getting better every time!

This weekend will be one great big teta filled party with events at Pearl + Nikki Beach, Surfcomber, Score, Opium Garden, Ora Ultra Lounge, and even a very special show at that soon to be a memory venue Studio A by transgendered leading girl band The Cliks!

There you have it. You can party with tons of bikini clad lesbians, and it's all for a VERY good cause! You may even get a chance to meet that Tila Tequila loser girl, what was her name?? As any respectable homosexual male would say; "Tits, booze, and house music….I'M THERE!!"

Check out http://www.aquagirl.org/ for all the muff eating facts!

I lived in a jiggaryder brothel

I've always felt that I imbue a certain intense sexual energy anywhere I go. That's why they fired me from my job at the neonatal ward at Jackson.

The latest twist in my red-hot saga involves the grand 1920s home I used to rent at 503 NE 27th Street. Apparently, the new tenant has transformed the 5 bedroom monstrosity into a weird gay black gangsta sex house complete with webcams broadcasting the whole ordeal to the world. I feel cheated because nothing that interesting ever happened while I was living there.

Michael M performs at Sidedoor Sally Sunday night

Side Door Sally is a new party at Dream. It's got a mixed gay/straight crowd that, from what I've heard, reflects the old South Beach feeling where things were a little more amorphous and unclassifiable. This Sunday, house music vocalist and producer Michael M will be performing his new track Downtown and his older song Dear Diary (which we've featured before). I'm going to try to swing by if I don't have too much obscure blog-related busy work to do, and if I can convince my mop of hair to be fabulous enough.

Want to get on the list? Email leosun27@aol.com to get in free until midnight. There are only 50 slots available on this list so write now!

Mika in Miami!

"Anyone can label me, but I'm not willing to label myself," Mika tells the new issue of Out magazine.

Gay? Bi? Straight? Zoophile? Who cares?! I certainly dont, especially when it comes to my boy Mika. The Lebanon-born performer is finally making a pit stop at the 305 this Sunday, June 17! If you want pre-sale tickets, you're fucked. Studio A has sold out on their website. However, there is still hope for you my little tender dumplin'. The folks of Studio A are still going to be releasing tickets at the door. The concert is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. However, if you are planning to score tickets at the event, I would suggest arriving 15 minutes before doors open just in case.

Personally, I am oh so stoked too see my boy in concert. I can not wait to see him belt out my favorite tracks: "My Interpretation," "Stuck in the Middle," and "Ring Ring." In case you have not seen it yet, be sure to check out his latest video for the single "Love Today."

Fun Fact: Mika experienced severe bullying at school because of his dyslexia. El pobre innocente!

After the private screening it's the after party and...

Are you a homosexual? Well I am. That means tonight I will be at The Sagamore Hotel for the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival's private screening after party of Outing Riley. I have so much love for "The Sagy". I adore the artwork, the music, the bathrooms, even the door troll is a sweetie pie with a cherry on top. With that said, Martini Tuesdays could not of picked a better venue for this private (hush hush) screening after party.

The first 50 guests will recieve a free subscription to Genre Magazine. Now I have never been too keen on books, or literature, or Edgar Allen Poe- but I do love my magazines. So trim those nipple hairs and head out to The Sagamore tonight! Party starts at 9 and will surely be cleared by 2 am, unless your the dead guy on the lounger... his party never ends.

Don't cha know Edison Farrow?

The gays know Edison Farrow as the familiar face who fills their inbox weekly with nightlife updates and the latest local tittle-tattle. As for the straight crowd, unfortunately they may not be as acquainted. With his perfectly coiffed hair and debonair façade, it’s clear that Farrow is easy on the eyes. However, he is far more than a pretty face. Edison is the creator of The South Beach Social Club. While he hosts several weekly soirées, Martini Tuesdays is arguably the most popular. Now in its sixth year, Martini Tuesdays is a weekly cocktail party that meets at a different venue every week. In the past, Farrow’s parties have attracted stars like Rupert Everett, the guys from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Janice Dickinson, and a handful of reality TV folks.

In the gay world, it’s easy to fall into the trance of cheesiness and phonies. Edison serves as both an inspiration, and a sigh of relief in knowing that just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I’m doomed for Lycra muscle tees and poorly highlighted hair. I’m clearly not alone when I say that we need more gays like Farrow up in the 305.

Edison was nice enough to make time for little-ole-me and answer a few questions “David Jon style”. Here’s what went down... (keep reading)
