Today in Miami..

Gallery: Wynwood Second Saturdays w/ Freegums, Hexagon and Diet Gallery

Last night was pretty fucking insane. The parties were great even if the turnouts weren't stellar. Poplife at White Room was packed! I mean it was impossible to move and the line for the girls' bathroom was about a 30-minute wait. Bronques of lastnightsparty.com did make an appearance, and I took my opportunity to chat with him. He's a super nice guy and seemed pretty happy to be documenting Miami's Downtown scene, probably because his last few Miami galleries have all been in and around South Beach. I told him I was glad he was back to doing what he did best: taking pictures of camera-obsessed hipsters. He did take quite a few pictures of me, some of which in ordered me to look angry, which isn't hard for me to do, people are always pissing me off. Another where me and my friend Berna posed, er, well, I guess you could call it seductively.

Oh and word to the wise, a cardigan paired up with Miami humid does not equal fun times not matter how good you look. I learned that last night.

Tonight: Sarah T.'s Goodbye Party @ The Vagabond

I love my bartenders. They keep me happy, get me drunk and even cut me some slack on my tab. One of my favorite bartenders has to be Sarah T. (she's the one on the right), formerly of Studio A, who finished her last week of bartending EVER at The Vagabond last week. She is leaving me for Los Angeles to become a stylist (which she is actually very good at doing). So in celebration of all the drunken times we spent together, we'll be wishing her farewell tonight at Fridays at The Vagabond. Stop by and say goodbye!

I'll miss you Sarah :(

My Ode to Kanye (or Why I Hate Kanye So Much)

As far as ego and diva behavior goes, Mr. Kanye West takes the cake. Don't get me wrong Kanye, I can't wait for the day that I'm so rich I can afford my very own assistant that I can throw scalding hot coffee on when he or she doesn't get my order right -- that's the day I know I've made it. But Kanye, you've taken so much pride out of being a grade-A asshole, you expect everyone to just coyly say "Oh, that little rascal Kanye is at it again!"

You've got to realize something, you're behavior isn't amussing, in fact, it undermines your work. I'd like you more if you didn't bitch every time someone has something bad to say about you. In fact, had it been me, I'd given you a lower score. Why? I've seen your light show before when it was called the Daft Punk Alive Tour. You probably get off stealing from French electro artists, because you've even extended it to your music videos. You like to call yourself an "artist", saying what you do isn't pop but "pop art." I'm sorry, what? Since when did rapping about expensive cars, how awesome you are and the girls you bang constitute as art? Fact is, as a rapper you are rhymes are pretty weak in comparison to others and in reality you are all about studio wizardry. And I give props where props are due, as a far as music production goes you are definitely strong on that point -- well, except in the case when you castrate one of the best dance songs perhaps ever created.

So when you roll into town tomorrow to perform at the American Airlines Arena, leave your bullshit at the door, 'cause you ain't as great as you think you are.

Monday: Slutty Cinco de Mayo @ Pawn Shop

Gasp! I know, promoting something at Pawn Shop. Who would have thought? But the people behind the Slutty Cinco de Mayo party are good people who always guarantee you fun times. And with $5 tequila shots, $5 beers and $75 bottles, how can you go wrong? Plus DJ Obi T. and Mike Deuce will be there to get you sweatin'. This is of course is if you don't have Radiohead tickets, but even if you do, stop by afterward, you'll already be out.

Thursday: Money Shot @ The Vagabond

Everyone come tomorrow to the Money Shot party The Vagabond where we'll be saying goodbye to friend-of-the-site Ms. Paige, also known as Open Bar Paige, because, well, she can wipe out an entire bar's supply of liquor during open bar, who will be leaving this week to NYC. You probably recognize her since she is a usually featured in our galleries. Anyway, in celebration of her departure from MIA, The Vagabond is doing open bar from 10 to 11 p.m. So come and get drunk in honor of the blond bombshell.

Wednesday: La Quinceañera @ The Vagabond

Okay, I'm going to come out and admit it: I once, at the age of 13, danced in a Quinces. It gets worse: I was the main guy dancing with the quinceanera. It was horrible, I did it against my own wishes, but my mother forced me saying when I was older I'd look back at it and remember what a great experience it was. I'm looking back at it now; it fucking sucked.

Well Que Pasa MIA and The Vagabond are looking to bring back the nightmare of a Quinces party tomorrow with La Quinceanera. Yes, a Quinces party with promises of suprises, lechon and girls named Marileidys. Jose El Rey, DS363, Induce, Alex Caso, Madame Turk, Jon Vincent and Otto Von Santo (which I'm guessing is actually Schirach) will all be on hand. They also promise a secret, super famous DJ.

Oh and no, I shall not provide you with any pictures of me at the Quinces. It's better off forgotten.

Bondê Do Role @ Studio A

They were amazing. Marina who? Laura Taylor and Ana Bernardino left no doubt in my mind that they are going to bring a lot of good things to the group. The crowd was a little thin last night, which was sort of disappointing because I expected a better turn out. Still, they gave it their all and everyone who was there enjoyed themselves. Anyway, I already wrote a review for the New Times, so I'm not about to write another one. Below is a small clip of the show I took with my camera for your enjoyment. And yes, the sample you hear is "Summer Nights".

Tonight: Interrogating Systems at CIFO

Tonight, CIFO opens its big clunky gates for Interrogating Systems, its spring grants and awards exhibit. The exhibit comes out of the hundreds of emerging/mid-career applicants considered for the grant, about 10 receive the prestigious award. All the artists are practically exclusively South American (as they always seem to be) hailing this year from Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Chile and Ecuador. CIFO offers the artists vast space to exhibit whatever the hell they want, a bag full of cash, free transportation, and slaves to install the art for them (people like me!) not to mention a damn good chance of having a piece bought by the collector/director herself, Ella Cisneros, catapulting the young artists into the vein of high profile merit as being apart of a collection like Cisneros' (One of the TOP 100 collectors in America). Seriously, being a part of this show pretty much establishes you as an artist. The art isn't half bad either (for the most part).

The site states the show to open tomorrow, yet B.A.C can attest to the wild cocktail reception that happens the night before. "RSVP required" and "Invite Only" are scare tactics to shoo away the masses, and it works pretty well. If you have never been to CIFO, tonight is the night you want to go. This show is much different than last years as far as having way more traditional 2D media and IMO better, than even their Basel exhibit. I am stunned and impressed. I will not be missing this.

CIFO is located at 1018 N Miami Ave., one block south (and west) of the 11th Street clubsterfuck (space/studio a/nocturnal/goldrush).

Saturday: Zombie Party @ PS14

Can I just start out by saying how I'm loving this new trend of "video flyers". First DAMNSON, now the Zombie Party at PS14. What's a zombie party you say? It's a party that you go to dress as, er, well a zombie. It's part early Halloween party, part potential murder scenario. If you attend you'll get to see all of Miami's favorite underground (and I mean like 20 feet underground) artists and DJs like Otto Von Shirach, Notorious Nastie, Johnny Sex Fuck & The Flesh Rockets, Thug Jesus and more! It all concludes with an Overtown zombie walk, which if you heard about the one that happened in Lincoln Road not too long ago you know its should be fun. Now I leave you think the amazingly grotesque and quasi NSFW video for the party. If you are wrapping up breakfast I suggest skipping it for now.

Wednesday: Ardbeg Graffiti Tour '08 @ White Room (Free Booze Alert!) UPDATE

Wednesday April 23 from 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. White Room will be hosting the Ardbeg Graffiti Tour '08. Moet Hennesy USA is sponsoring the event to introduce Miami to Ardbeg, a single-malt scotch. All I am hearing is "We want to give you free booze!" I'm sold! Also on hand is "internationally renowned" graffiti artist Rajan Sedalia who is selling out for what probably is a nice hefty corporate check to do Ardbeg artwork live (before you send me hate mail, I'd sell out too). It's unclear if this is a free event that's open to the public or if there is some list action going on. I'll try to figure out the logistics and let you know as soon as I find out.

UPDATE: RSVP is required for the event tonight. You can RSVP directly to info@whiteroommiami.com.

Sony Foam Commercial

Remember that Sony commercial I briefly mentioned that was filmed in Downtown Miami, which if you ask me it was only filmed here because production happened in the winter. Well All Purpose Dark found a clip of the results:

Back Door Bamby returns Saturday

Hell ya! Carmel Ophir's infamous Monday-night party Back Door Bamby returns this week for one night only on Saturday at where else but The Vagabond. If you've never heard or gone to Back Door Bamby, listen to me and listen to me carefully: YOU MUST GO! This party is legendary because shit gets crazy. I never had the opportunity to go to it back in the day and have been begging Carmel to bring the party back so I can experience what all the fuss is about. Well Saturday I'll finally get my chance.

There will be plenty of DJs for your listening pleasure including DJ Shannon and hot-slut-of-the-site Jessica Who? in the main room, while DJs Gregg Foremann and  Ryan Evans along with Carmel himself will be spinning the in Bar Room. You can also expect appearances by Circ X, The Sex Kittens, Adora, Jose "Negro" Ramirez and Lovely Lola.

Tonight: Flosstradamus @ Money Shot

Call it the worst kept secret, but the Chicago DJ duo Flosstradamus will be at Money Shot tonight. These guys are amazing and always blow the roof off any place they play. Last time I saw them was at the Revolver anniversary party at the Boutique Room in Pawn Shop Lounge and they had everyone dancing their pants off. I'm guessing the duo is in town thanks to the Chromeo show tonight at the Fifth; they've been touring together since last year.

So if you have any plans tonight, scratch them and hit up The Vagabond. Tonight also marks the return of DJ Contra to the Money Shot lineup and everyone knows Contra is a crowd-pleaser, so you've got two great reasons to go.

Update: Apparently this is the official Chromeo afterparty, not the one at Love/Hate.

Parkwest Nightclub finally re-opens

I know, last week we said Parkwest would re-open but after receiving a last minute call it turns out the "Grand Re-opening" would be postponed another week. This week though we have received confirmation from some Parkwest people and seen some flyers and posts on our events page that indeed this week it is happening. To help sweeten the deal there will be open bar from 10-12pm. There will also be a fashion show put on by Six Degrees Magazine. Spinning the house music goodness will be Shawn Rudnick and Patrick M. Click the flyer thumbnail for full size. Check the Community Blogs on the right for comp entrance opportunities. See you there!

Tomorrow: Danny Daze @ Money Shot

What can I say about Danny Daze that hasn't been said before? The kid is A-MAZING. Usually when he is in town he DJs at places like Glass or Cameo, which I rather be mauled by a pitbull than have to deal with the bullshit at the door at those places. Daze always thrives better anyway when he is playing at a real party, so take his appearance at Money Shot tomorrow as your opportunity to catch him in all his glory. And face it, Downtown audiences are more open to listening to the new than South Beach crowds, so that should give Daze plenty of leeway to tear Vagabond a new one.

Reminder: Money Shot @ The Vagabond TONIGHT

Thursday: Money Shot at Vagabond

Everyone rejoice! Thursdays are back to being the new Fridays thanks in large part to Xavier Burt and Jake Jefferson, better known as the guys behind Money Shot. Remember Money Shot? It started at Pawn Shop, then moved to Love Hate. Now it's back at a perfectly sized venue for the party. This Thursday DJ Blu Jemz (LA) will spinning for the crowd alongside resident DJs Contra and Induce.

Be aware there is a new cover charge policy that mimics the Poplife formula: free before midnight, $10 after. And it's all going down at the Vag -- um, you know, The Vagabond.
