Today in Miami..

Introducing: Local Funk Fridays

Hi blogosphere, this is the first post in a new weekly series where I'll post an MP3 or two to highlight certain acts rolling into town that you like, hate, or think are okay.

Yo Majesty is a female rap duo from Tampa Bay that rolls around with an attitude. These ladies got some blog love not to long ago from the track "Club Action" with remixes done by Midnight Juggernauts and Chris from the Bag Raiders. The first half of their tour had them playing with Does It Offend You, Yeah? but while they're down here they'll be joined by Rosetta Stoned and Mauikai. All this goes down at the soon to be defunct but hopefully revitalized Studio A, Friday, May 23. It's all ages and the doors open at 7 p.m., so there'll be more then enough time to go out after. The song is a nice mix of Club Action done by Party Shank.

If you're wondering who the hell I am, my name's Dalton and I like playing with the knobs on synthesizers. Here is a remix of Tilly and the Wall I did with Diego_0:

missingtoofdotcom

I'm a blog snob. On my rss I think i have too many to keep up with in a healthy manner. It satisfies a carnal desire to click and stare whilst making the mind work very fast. I love it.

Newest add to my feed is MISSINGTOOF.COM and decided share it here because of nightlife relevance.. Quite the nice blog. It's  very down to business in the remix/dj set department. Good tunes in there. Interesting blogroll as well.

This mix made me wobble. enjoy.

Around the Blogosphere

Too many things to point out, too little time. It may be because I started a workout regiment that has left me with little energy which in turn has made me extremely lazy. Don't judge! When I get down to a borderline manorexic weight, you will all be so jealous. Anyway, here are some things I want to touch on:

  • Why do people keep acting like Britto is a respectable artist and an icon of this city? Give me Lebo any day over Britto's uninspired "pop-art".
  • I think Lesley Abravanel is stalking Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. Aniston just blinked reports Abravanel and fortunately no one cares.
  • Miami.com Beta does a nice little write upon everyone's favorite Sunday night party at Purdy Lounge. Oddly enough they make the place sound nicer than it is, when it reality it's a hot mess, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
  • Terrorists attack Downtown Miami with foam, or new Sony commercial being filmed? You decide.
  • Finally, someone realized R.E.M. sucks. Now if everyone could just agree with Radiohead and U2 as well.
  • Miami Beach 411 talks about the Cleve -- ew, sounds like a VD, which it isn't far off -- better known at the Clevelander. Midwesterns, thongs and itchy genitalia unite!

Miami Nights & RoadBurn

B.A.C. played host on Friday to the guys from RoadBurn, which is a group of Canadian guys documenting their trek across the southern United States. Miami was their first stop on their roadtrip and instead of taking them to the fake and touristy clubs found in Miami Beach, B.A.C. made sure they checked out the side of the city few ever bother to see by taking them to PS14 on Friday.

They interviewed B.A.C. and myself, which I'm hoping the video surfaces soon. Needless to say our answers were the typical asshole comments you have come to expect from us. We talked out Miami Beach, lost snowbirds and the site itself. Wait for it!

February Art Walk recap

As always a nice post of pics and commentary on the monthly art walks courtesy of Critical Miami:

Blackbooks' spectacular show at Spinello - no stencils, all wood cuts. With the help of a computer and laser, images are precision-cut out of the top layer of a piece of painted wood. The results tend to speak for themselves, and note that this technique gets extended into sculpture and other media with, presumably, the use of a jigsaw.

Local blogger sued

Having studied libel and slander in my journalism ethics class in college I know there are certain things I can and will get sued for if I ever decide to blog about. Unfortunately, the blogger at Miami Condo Investments, Lucas Lechuga wasn't as careful and was slapped with $25 million defamation lawsuit after he wrote about developer Tibor Hollo. Apparently Lechuga wrote that Hollo filed for bankruptcy in the 1980s and warned investors that his Opera Tower project could meet a similar fate. Turned out that Hollo never filled for bankruptcy and he is none to pleased that Lechuga is telling investors to steer clear of his development.

Of course the smart guy that Hollo is he is not only suing Lechuga but the brokerage company EWM he was a contracted agent for. He alleges Lechuga is doing a smear campaign against him. Come on Hollo, isn't that a little far fetched? So he erroneously wrote about your past finances, that's understandably upsetting, but that definitely isn't worth $25 million. All Lechuga wanted to do was to give sound advice to investors during what I personally consider bad times. It's refreshing to see that there is at least one honest real estate agent out there not looking to make a big commission but instead to insure his clients make the right decision.

I personally hope all goes well for Lechuga, and I support him 100 percent in the work he does through his blog, even if EWM thinks its best to keep things "positive" (read: don't make the crashed market sound so bad).

Miami.com Beta launched by Miami Herald

Miami.com has finally launched and it looks like the Herald has put more time and resources into this site than their actual news outlet. I mean instantly you can see a pretty big difference in the level of quality and this begs the question as to whether the Herald really gives a shit about it's online news source. Critical Miami gives a short overview of some of the features the Beta site has. I have briefly clicked through it and already I am impressed with the amount of content it contains. From the welcome page you can expect the following from Miami.com
On Miami.com, you can find out where J.Lo and Ludacris go to eat, which Miracle Mile boutiques are worth a look and what to do with the kids this weekend. We'll also show you how to find a terrific empanada and how to navigate local airports, traffic and customs (like how to order a Cuban coffee.)
No matter how robust the content though at first glance the site looks like a glorified travel website filled with positive information and nothing negative. I guess Ill have to dig down deeper into the site and see if I can find some real opinions. Or, they could outsource the writing and photographing to MN and we could spice things up a 'lil.

Around the web in 30 seconds

Some miscellaneous items of interest from around the Web..

  1. The indefatigable Critical Miami brings us news of a major cockfighting bust. Thank God the Miami Dade PD has their priorities straight! Dead birds are the woooorst. Be sure to read the comments where a totally needless argument about animal cruelty erupts and spontaneously devolves into backbiting and personal attacks. It's very web 2.0.
  2. Miami Condo Investments Blog has some good posts about the slow rate of closings at major new properties, most recently One Bal Harbour. It's hard to draw too many conclusions from solely analyzing closing rates, but the low numbers (~30% in two months) are telling. I believe it's still too early to draw the curtain on this project though. As an aside, is this the most carefully named blog on earth? The SEO benefit to all that great content is huge. Plus this incoming link. You're welcome.
  3. The old dolphin at the Seaquarium has died. It was 40, which is far too old for a dolphin anyway. I wonder if they'll just leave the corpse rotting there to contribute to the rest of the vague, unappealing smells that permeate that place?
  4. Transit Miami brings us word of yet another plan to relieve 836 traffic. Life for the commuter is hopeless; if you're going 836 East a lot, I have a condo to sell you at your destination. Also, the fact that a blog exists that discusses solely Miami Transit makes me feel better about the monotonous entertainment industry garbage we serve up on MN.
  5. The new and ever-hardcore Stylus Funk brings us a review of Anja Schneider's performance at that shady but delicious illegal warehouse party that occurs a block from Parc Lofts. I hate myself for not attending. Photo gallery included.

Interesting Miami Sports News

Gonna make this short and sweet since information on the two events is rather scarce but the news is pretty huge:

  • Bill "The Tuna" Parcels has inked a four year deal to be the Miami Dolphins vice president of football operations. The Tuna is a winner plain and simple. Every team he has been with simply does well. Now as a front office type of guy? Not sure how he will do but the man knows how to evaluate and use talent. I'm not overly excited since Saban, Cameron and Mueller have sucked my cancer ridden left testicle. But let's see how he does in the draft and free agency before we judge. This also means our semi asian looking owner Wayne Huizenga will not sell the team (*phwew*).Check out Finsnation and Sportech Matter for more detailed info and commentary.
  • Alonzo Mourning tore his patella tendon in his knee likely ending his magnificent career. Zo has been a staple with the Heat through the thick and thin and finally won a championship he so deserved. He came back from kidney surgery to have a huge impact on the team and I'm sure every Miami Heat fan is shocked by the sudden career ending injury. We wish you well and thanks for all the great years and incredible hustle. I leave you with a mix of Zo's highlights (watch all the stuffs, it's a beautiful thang).

Stuck on the Palmetto bows out of the blogosphere

Well it seems Miami's most popular blog, Stuck on the Palmetto, is bowing out of business of blogging on everything Miami. After a tumultuous week which involved the near outing of Ricks identity, one half of SoTP, by Palm Beach New Times blogger Bob Norman the duo has decided to call it quits. Blogs come and go so this isn't new in the world of blogging. It's just a shame it ended how it did. I considered SoTP to be the best blog on Miami with thoughtful commentary and entertaining posts. After 5,800 posts SoTP bows out of the Miami lime light. Good luck to Rick and Alex. Buh bye SoTp.
