Jose El Rey and Otto Von Schirach : The Interview

The following is an interview held late one night at Mary's Coin Laundry (a 24hr laundromat/cafe that holds a special place in many local hearts) with two of Miami's home grown wildcards of unique dance flavors. It contains lude and lascivisious acts of truth, a little spanglish, confessions of passion, crime and the makings of Miami Bass. Interview after the jump

Lee Burridge: Night of the living technical mishaps...

My office phone rings roughly around noon and wouldn't you know it, it's none other than B.A.C. of Miami Nights. "Got any knowledge on Lee Burridge?" He said, and with a stammer in my voice I replied, "Not exactly, but if you give me about five seconds I'll know everything about Lee Burridge". He then goes on to add that he has scored an interview with the legendary DJ and asked if I would be able to make it out and have a little face to face pow-wow with a DJ who is highly coveted around the world. This DJ was a very sophisticated and witty man who I shamefully had never heard of.

Read on for my interview with Lee Burridge and a review of his show!

Miami Talent Spotlight: DJ Ross One

A Miami Nights favorite, DJ Ross One's fast-paced style keeps his weekly parties packed till the lights come on. This man does not let you get bored --it's not even in his vocabulary. There's no time to stand around wondering about the next song -- you're either dancing your ass off or hiding in a corner with your inhaler hoping you don't get busted by a Miami Nights photographer. If you haven't already checked him out, you're an idiot, but you can redeem yourself by doing so every Tuesday at Mokai for Favela Chic (my favorite party on the beach, if you care), every Thursday at Set for Rotten Apple, and Every Friday at Studio A For Misfit Fridays beginning September 28th. From a DJ looking out for my fellow comrades, whatever you do, just don't ask how Serato works.

JK: What is your preferred equipment, including headphones?

R1: Technics SL1200s, pretty much any decent mixer (Rane or Pioneer),
MacBook Pro, Serato, Technics DJ1200 Headphones.  Pretty standard
stuff.

JK: What did you want to be when you grew up?

R1: A Photographer.

JK: How long have you been DJing, in or outside of your bedroom?

R1: I got my first turntable and a mixer when I was 16... So that's 13
years now.  Getting real DJ equipment was so exciting back then, I
lived in Ohio and I remember having these DJ equipment catalogues from
NYC stores like Upstairs Records that I read over and over again
obsessively.  I got a shitty gemini turntable and 19" mixer with a
sampler built in for my birthday that year.

Miami Talent Profile: DJ Ruen

You might have heard this sexy man, real name Brandon, tearing it up last week at Revolver, dropping sick unknown tracks back to back. We bring you an interview with the man himself.

1. Why don't you introduce yourself to some of the people reading our site that may not know you? What's your name, where are you from, how long have you been DJing, etc?

Born Brandon Pendleton, I grew up in Huntington Beach California most of my life and moved to Miami 5 years ago. I started djing in 98, later playing local clubs and Bars in LA and OC. Now working part time at Scratch Dj Academy in South Beach and producing full time in North Miami.

Miami Talent Spotlight: The Deuce Crew

We have been big fans of The Deuce Crew here at Miami Nights for some time now so it's only appropriate that we start our new weekly Miami Spotlight segment with the foursome crew that has been ripping up the local club scene with their brand of Disc Jockeying. Bringing a new flavor to the music scene with their own edits and unique music selection the scene was definitely overdue for a group of DJ's that were willing to break from that indie/electro norm and do it so well. Of course there are some other DJ's in Miami that are breaking new ground but we will get to them in later Miami Spotlight segments.

You can catch the crew all over the Miami club scene from Buck 15 to PS14 and even Ft. Lauderdale (be safe my friends). The Deuce Crew was nice enough to do a little Q&A session with us and provide an edit they produced, some of their mixtapes (banging shit!) and a top 10 music list. Read on for the goodies.

Q:Tell us a little about your boys and what you are up to lately.

A:Mike Deuce is the leader of the pack. Mainly by force and threat though. One of the main reasons DEUCE CREW was started was to get Deuce out there DJing, since Treasures (Alex) and R3K+ (Ricardo) were able to get their foot in the door to a few places through their band, Animals of the Arctic (plug!). We started DJing together at house parties and small personal events, throwing down whatever the fuck we wanted. Then we decided we wanted to hear the tracks we were spinning through better sound systems, and wanted to get people bouncing to what we thought they should be bouncing to. The latest thing that's happened has been recruiting DS363 (Dadeabass), which we are beyond fucking thrilled about. So DEUCE CREW is 4 of us now. Kinda' like the Apocalypse horsemen, but not quite as bad-ass.

Interview: Mickey Avalon @ Studio A

Andre Legacy and Dirt Nasty (aka Simon Rex) opened up for Mickey. When these two Jigga Boos got on stage the first thing I thought was “ DAMN you guys are some major fuckin’ pot heads huh? ” Why? Well for one thing Dirt was wearing a pair of UFO style gray jeans that I’m sure if you got close enough to smelled like stale bong water. Not to mention he was wearing FLIP FLOPS on stage! Dirt and Andre were in good spirits though. Lots of energy, vocals were on point but more importantly they were LIVE.

The show had your typical hip hop set up. The dj in the back and two hot vixens (and they were hot I must say) gyrating on the sides. I like to call it The Cock and Balls set up.

I didn’t see the infamous WMC train wreck performance B.A.C wrote about but this one was definitely on the good side. This time around Avalon was coherent (at least I think he was wink wink). The first thing I noticed when Mickey hit the stage were his new tattoos. One was a depiction of a Mexican girl (just her head) with a flower in her hair and eye’s looking off to he side. The second one was of a sick ass skull with bugged out eyeballs. I thought both were well done ink jobs.

DJ CRAZE Interview

Since he burst onto the scene in 1999 as the unlikely winner of the DMC championships, DJ Craze has captivated audiences throughout the world. He would go onto win 2 more DMC championships and was voted Time Magazine’s number 1 dj in 2001. DJ craze is his own breed: combining a mixture of hip hop, drum & bass, breaks and turntablism to make magic. Miami Nights caught up with DJ Craze to see who he would like to collaborate with, whether he thinks dance music can expand in the States, and what his thoughts were about the saturation of blends. If you went to Ultra, we hope you didn't miss this set!
